what kind of paint do you use to paint the cover?

r0meua
04-18-2008, 11:01 AM
I used engine enamel (its high heat enamel) from Dupli-Color. But befor I sprayed i sanded it with a very light sand paper (to give the paint somethign to stick to). Wiped it down with a moist towel, dryed it off, taped off anything I didn't want painted. Sprayed with 5 coats, 1 min. rest between coats and let it sit over night.

I've thought about getting a rattle-can kit from paintscratch.com to match colors, but it's pretty low on the list of priorities.

I'll be getting a red AEM cold air intake within the next month so that’s when I'll clean it up and maybe paint the battery cover too.

On your P5? Use high heat paint. Sand the cover, spray a metallic base coat, paint with high heat paint.

Check out the P5 section for painted valve covers. This thread has engine covers.

I painted mine with a can of Krylon fusion Pepper Red. The silver was done with a silver Sharpie paint marker.

Don't be afraid to screw up either, you can just sand and start over again. I had a bug land on 1 of the pieces and I just let it dry and sanded it. After sanding it I added another layer and it came out fine.

Mine is an 08 i Touring sedan. Just painted the dip stick handle silver last night and added some red tube wraps under the hood to tie everything together more.

He lightly sanded the ares with really fine grit sand paper.

Welcome to the boards also.

It's not very difficult people.

I'd hate to see you guys trying to paint your headlight (Woohoo for P5 owners! you know what I'm talking about).

You can paint just about anything. I painted the valve cover, engine bay & brake calipers on my Miata with spray paint.

On my P5 I did my headlights, tails (sold them), side markers, bumper lights, flying 'M' badges, interior & bezels, calipers...

Good luck.

Thanks everyone for your comments! Yeah I know that I have to paint the letters silver as well. Just too damn lazy at the moment.

these pictures all look great guys!! I was thinking of painting my engine cover this weekend. Was also thinking of painting my calipers too. Do you think that the paint will help with rusting and stuff on the calipers? Cause they look kinda nasty from all the salt and stuff. Also, is it the same paint I would use?

BurnoutX
02-13-2009, 08:49 AM
you definately want to use high temp paint for your calipers("engine" paint).

as for the plastic, not sure if the standard would work well :)

Caffein8d
04-05-2009, 09:42 PM
For you guys with the cover that runs across the car (as opposed to the conver being sectioned from front to back), were you able to take the Mazda logo off before painting?

I'm planning on doing this once it gets warm, but having black plastic surrounded by silver will annoy the crap out of me.

Yes, but you have to basically melt or cut the pins out from the back. It's attached at the factory by melting the plastic of the emblem to the plastic of the cover. Not that hard though. I took mine off and metalcasted it, then put it back on with glue.

That looks good.

That's how i did mine. Did you aso use a silver sharpie on the lettering?

Dragwn
07-30-2009, 03:16 PM
The letters were painted, my brother did alot of work to my car as a gift to me, he used either the paint pens or small brushes, I can ask him which.

I need shots of my interior, everything above the doorline (with the window down) that was grey, is now black and he did an "M" logo in blue to match the car the arches of the M start at the B pillars on each side.
