OBD II reader

i bought an OBD reader and it won't work with the car. Is it because its stick shift, the manual said to start the car and plug it in and it will work. I did it in my friends car which is an automatic and had a check engine light and it worked fine.

what kind of reader is it? ive had the same problem with mine (auto) but it was a reader from autozone or advanced but then i used my friends autotap reader and it worked fine.

i found out why it wont work; its because it doesn't have the CAN protocol and almost all cars that are from 2007+ require CAN now. It was a OBD II reader from ebay...some cheap shit, it works great though and was built pretty nicely but just doesn't have bells and whistles. thanks anyways.
