Thanks go out to Nilay (faultfracture) and Split Second for bringing this to market.

We've been selling the Split Second AFC for the Protege and Mazdaspeed Protege for a few years now and have been very happy with the results to date. We've finally gotten around to having a Mazda3 unit produced and the results have been very good thus far. I'll let faultfracture chime in with his impressions of the unit which was installed and tuned at Split Second's facility in California.

The PSC1-003 Programmable Signal Calibrator provides precise calibration of fuel by adjusting fuel control signals. It can be used with naturally aspirated or forced induction engines. It is intended for use on any application that uses a zero to five volt load sensor and is generally used to adjust fuel by calibrating the mass air flow (MAF) or manifold absolute pressure (MAP) signal. In the case of the mazda3, it is the MAF signal. Through a serial or USB to serial interface, the AFC can be programmed by a laptop computer running the Split Second R4 software. The software provides three dimensional mapping of the MAF signal. In direct mode, the MAF value is determined by the active cell value. The active cell is determined by MAF sensor output voltage and RPM.

The PSC1-003 can be configured for a second mode of operation whereby the cell value is used to modify the MAF signal signal. For example, the MAF sensor signal could be modified up or down according to the table values.

The calibration of the PSC1 is done through a serial or serial to USB interface, which is active while in operation. The R4 software runs on Windows 95/98/NT/2000/XP/Vista. The software provides real time display of RPM, air flow, and cell value. A variety of editing tools ease the task of setting up an initial map and quickly fine tuning for optimum performance.

The unit is weather proofed to allow for external mounting such as in the engine bay. I have attached a picture showing where the unit is installed presently, tucked and hidden from view. All Split Seconds we offer include wideband datalogging functions as well so you can tune more specifically with a wideband sensor or gauge.

In short, you have a fully function air/fuel controller that allows you to tune for every part you've thrown at your Mazda3 - intake, exhaust, header, cams, intake manifold. You can tune not only to run more efficiently, but gain more horsepower and torque as well through optimized air/fuel ratios. All units will come with a base N/A map, and if there is interest I will launch a group buy. Price for 5 units at the GB price is $245 per unit.

base map is for a 2.3 but would only require minor adjustments to make it work for the 2.0

I will get some dyno's in a couple weeks probably for the skeptics. Car runs great, no CEL's or issues at all. The butt dyno feels gains across the power band, exhaust note has definitely change (from richening of the a/f), and power delivery as well as drivability is much better. This is a great mod for the money people, and its a mod that keeps giving since its user tunable!

i am deff interested in this! i have the 2.0 though. What adjustments need to be made for it to work with the 2.0. Also i don't know much about AFC's; i understand i can tune my engine BUT wouldn't i be tunining it to feed more gas to the engine so in result of that gas mileage would go down? How much power would i gain, just want to see an approx number. I have fujita CAI, thunder header, and monstaz advance timing and soon to be magnaflow exhaust.

you could add fuel but more than likely you'll want to pull fuel. the mods you've listed aren't going to lean the car out sufficiently enough to require adding fuel. if anything i am betting (i have almost the same mods as you do on my 2.3 mazda5) that you're running too rich honestly and in need of leaning out.

I have the SS AFC in my MSP and it works great. This should be great for the Mazda3 and MS3

This is great. I want to see the dyno numbers from faultfracture first though before I order. I believe it works but just want to get an idea and know if the tuning stays or gets wiped out by the original cpu.

If this works I will be getting the intake manifold as well. This will go great with my other mods and with the manifold coming out this is beautiful. Once I get these 2 things I think all I will need is a ZEX wet kit as far as performance wise. Then I can work on audio and entertainment. I can not wait wooo :)

any chance of getting this for the 2.3l M6,some minor adjustments should be all that's necessary

I need the dyno #'s on this ASAP. Once I know these I will order if it is significant enough.

What kind of exhaust changes louder, quieter?

No dynos's as I totaled my 3 w/the afc back in april. My catless exhaust got quieter after the tune and sounded deeper. The afc isn't going to show great gains w/minor bolt ons, its better for drivability and power delivery, really smoothed things out. Should work really well w/an intake manifold though as that was my original plan

The car was totaled from the front end so the afc wasn't recoverable

Is there any other cars running this other then " faultfracture "? Any dynos of the gains?

i haven't offered/sold another to anyone else as of yet. i'm either going to do something when i get home from vacation on my own vehicle or approach someone else seeing as his car is out of commission sadly.

defenitely. are we expecting big gains out of n/a 2.3's?

tsunami
06-23-2008, 11:59 AM
big gains not likely... bolt ons plus this will probably put us just above the new stock n/a3 with the 2.5l coming out next year.... as you may notice i am a tiny bit bitter...

what is the new 2.5l 3s stock hp suppose to be?? Also why are you bitter??? Call me crazy but I'm shooting for 160whp to 170whp in my 3. I know its not going to be easy and it will take some work. (eekdance)

nah, 30-40hp more than stock is easy maintainable.

especially on the bottle :P

Alot of buzz is slowly being generated about this SS. I don't want to keep this thread to get burried since there is a good chance I might be picking this up.

where is the buzz being generated?

On the m3f forum a few mz3 members are interested in purchasing this set up and they are trying to get additional information on this. I wanted to keep this thread alive over here just in case I purchase this I can inform other members about whatever results I gain or don't gain.

The main issue everyone is interested in knowing is whether or not it would hold the tune or would the ECU relearn or re adjust.

Captain KRM P5

it holds the tune :) i'm doing one on my 5 soon

i have sold a half dozen or so. best bet would be to check over on M3F and see if anyone has posted about it there.
