View Full Version : Exhaust question

I recently got an MSP with a custom 3 inch catless exhaust with a HKS muffler. Needless to say the exhaust is excessively loud. What would be my least expensive option to quiet down the exhaust without excessive power loss.

you could try a silencer but it will still probably be a lil loud

a resonator would be good and it wont excessively rob your power.

I actually have a silencer in it and you're right its way to loud. I'm going to be getting a hi flow cat I don't need it but I want to clean my exhaust up a little. I was hoping that will quiet it down some, I will also look into the resonator.

if you put a cat on there it will quiet down a good bit. Put a resonator on in addition to the cat i should think that you'll be pleased; although a straight-through muffler design is never "quiet". muffler shops can bolt/weld either of those up for you. it should be pretty cheap.

or you can always add the cat, then ditch the HKS muffler for a quieter one. They can do that too.

I have a 3" turbo-back system with an HKS muffler .. and I actually have one high-flow cat and TWO resonators, and it's still pretty noisy.

Change the muffler.

with adding a cat, it will sound bad while the cats cold, mines raspy like a honda ricer fartcan untill the cat warms up, then its a bit quiter

I think I'm just going to save up and buy a whole exhaust kit. That way I have a pretty good idea of what kind of tone I will be getting from the exhaust. Thanks for all the good suggestions.

if your buyin a full exhaust get a ghl. with cat and resonator. mine isnt loud at all unless i am full throttle. at idle it just has a very slight hint of rumble

Ok i have a few questions that prob. sound stupid but oh well, Ive been looking at exhausts that are somewhat cheap but offer some power upgrades without being annoyingly loud. Taking the advise from Turbow in his "daily msp..." thread i was looking at the corksport power exhaust adding a cat to that, and keeping the stock axel-back on it, if i understand right i would still need the downpipe(j-pipe?) and maybe an s-pipe but not sure what that is and havn't been able to find many that match the 2.5" system. Other options that i was thinking of was getting midpipes with a high flow cat then the downpipe and again not sure where the s-pipe fits in all of that and keeping my stock muffler on which i assume is a fit for 2.5".. anyways, something along those lines, if i could get some input and info on anything would be a great help for a noob :p

vibrant exhaust or res.?

So the would the vibrant exhaust+ the res. would be a pretty quiet solution?.. also i was looking at the apex downpipe w/1 cat + fitted with apex cat-back exhaust(cat-back=no cat i assume?), would i still be missing the s-pipe or is that in the exhaust system?

cat back means from the cat back to the end of the system, so that depends on if you have a cat on your midpipe on whether or not it is catless.

haha, true considering that im only 20, i should be set, i just want to make sure that when i got it, it didn't sound like those exhausts that have half of it missing lol

The Vibrant Ultra Quiet Resonator, which i have on my Suby, lowered my exhaust noise by about 4 decibals.

So the noise was pretty much cut in half.

Thank you this was the answer I was looking for!!!!!
but I do hope it reduces my setup by that much...

Just something to ask, ive been looking on the forum and youtube ect (found 2-3 but were not very good quality and hard to relate to actual sound) ... for videos with a msp w/3" vibrant exhaust, found the thread with all of the videos of exhausts, but almost all of them that i checked were links to dead sites, or just exhausts that i wasn't interested in.. anywho...if theres anyone that has a video with a msp w/3" vibrant exhaust system best would be like a drive by or rev or w/e ya got would be great.

Yes, it quiets the exhaust noise better than bottle resonators.

okay so im looking into my new exhaust, and a pretty big noob to any of this stuff, i figured my MSP would be a good starter tuner

okay so im in love with the vibrant exhaust....however from what ive read its not turbo backed, and apperently since my cars turbod (duh) id assume theres power gains from having a turbo back?

so heres what my freind explained to me

"Here's the sequence in the exhaust from front to back
turbo
s-pipe
mid pipe
1st cat
2nd cat
cat back
muffler

What you get with the Vibrant
these 4
mid pipe
1st cat
2nd cat
cat back
"

okay so the vibrant exhaust package that ive seen for like 800 bucks is basically a non turbo back 2nd half of the exhaust setup right? so it doesnt completely replace the stock setup all the way down, just parts of it...if i understand that correctly. so would i be able to get a turbo back exhaust to connect to the vibrant? like the S pipe etc?

sorry if ive confused anyone, im learning fast haha

Well im pretty new myself but if you look at http://siteground207.com/~protegeg/product_info.php?cPath=281_32_166&products_id=399
the vibrant shows that it comes with a downpipe that would replace the stock s and j pipes but i guess if you have the cat-back version of that than there might be a possibility that you can get the downpipe from the vibrant website.. i don't know too much (scratch) but after myself being pretty confused what consisted of the exhaust i believe that the cat-back would usually be the mid-pipe and the axel-back part of it with a cat on the downpipe on some exhausts and on the midpipe (from what ive seen on aftermarket parts).. anyways hopefully this helps a little bit instead of confusing you more, unless im completely wrong, then just ignore me lol. and yes, the turbo-back exhaust shows better gains than the cat-back.

The Vibrant doesnt replace the s pipe, it replaces the j-pipe back though.. the j-pipe connects the s pipe to the midpipe..

oooo, hmm, so the downpipe doesn't replace both the spipe and the jpipe?, i must have confused myself at some point while reading info

okay, so is it possible to get an after market S pipe and attach it to the vibrant, thus giving me a vibrant exhaust kit WITH a turbo back?
