I recently noticed that my car only appears to be brunign oil out the tail pipe in the upper high rpms.

Now my car does have a lot of miles on it so I'm guessing that its just the valve seals or guides or maybe valves floating causing this due to higher oil presure in the high rpms.

We recently noticed this when a friend asked me to rev my car to hear the CAI. He only noticed this in the upper high rpms. My friend is also a Mech but I wanted to run this by other people to see what they have to say.

The car burns .5-1qrt every 3k miles dependind on how often I put my foot in it. Now the car has 163k miles on the current motor.. 100% orig engine.. no valve job, bottom end rebuild or anything like that.

I'm not to worried about it because the car runs fine and you can't see any smoke coming out the tail pipe on cold starts. Also their doesn't appear to be any cross Contamination in the oil or anti-freeze.

I guess im just curious as to what possabilities could be causing this.

I recently put an OBX oil catch can between my new fully functional pcv valve & the intake manifold to find that my actual oil loss to be much less. Saw it all gold in the IM removing VTCS from the return from pcv & wondered about it for awhile. The one going from vc to air intake has always been dry. Not saying I'm not burning any at all but is much less than I thought.

Thanks, I've considered getting one of those several times but just haven't gotten around to it. I did notice when I changed my rear mm that the inside of my intake had build up in it right after the little pipe that connects to the valve cover.

I was gonna put one on that side too but have never seen any signs of stuff in the air intake or on throttle body butterfly, just inside the intake manifold from the pcv return lines.

So is this smoking on or off throttle at high RPM? I get a decent amount of smoke off throttle coming back from high RPM but not while on the gas. If it was due to bad valve seals you would be getting smoke at startup. Also, 0.5-1 qt burned per 3000 miles isn't all that bad. I've almost gone through two full qrts and I'm only around 1500-2000 miles since my last change. I however can visibly see smoke coming out the rear at times. Anyhow, if it's on throttle I would say piston rings, if off I would say valve seals.

No smoke on startup & no way to see if smoke on throttle or off throttle when driving. Not enough to see while driving anyway. Suspect I'm burning a little because of rings but that's a very small amount based upon use vs. what's in the catch can. By far, most of what is missing from pan is in can.

Sounds like worn piston rings.
Keep the seafoam treatments to remove excess oil. Check your PCV and clean regularly. Inspect your plugs for oil fouling. Drive it until the oil gets worse.

I haven't replaced the PCV valve yet.

(neither have i and i have 150K miles. I just clean with carb cleaner real good every oil change)

If it rattles when you shake it and you can blow air in one direction and it stops it in the other - it is good.
