as long as any car. It'll last as long as you take care of it and do proper maintenance.

...and don't kill yourself showing off to your friends, driving like a maniac :D
Sorry, maybe it's just because I am old, but young drivers share the bejeesus out of me :)

+1 no offense, but if I had this type of power when I was 18 I would have killed someone. Just drive safely, the car can be difficult to control even for an experienced driver. 9 months is a long time to wait when your 17 you must dream of it every night. Good luck

what he said. i thought the 105HP from my protege dx was more than enough back then (boom07)
and yes, the car will last long as long as you take care of it. do regular mainteinance, let it get to operating temp before getting on the boost and don't beat on it everyday, you should be good.

im 17 myself, and i purchased a brand new 2007 mazda3 hatch (200% paid for by me and only me, honest) and i work at least 50 hours a week at a real job, not some 6$ an hour theatre job, which does allow me far more money than any 17 year old should have access to. im trading it in for a ms3 within the next few weeks.
the point im trying to make is that im making an honest living, and ive proven to be responsible enough to finance my own car and insurance, hence im not going to be a fool and slam it into a highway barrier doing 150 so my friends think im cool.
but other 'young' drivers do indeed scare the hell out of me as well, i was almost hit today in fact, leaving the school parking lot by a fellow student who was texting.

When I was 18 I had one of those 60's muscle cars with gobs of power, and the typical problems with brakes and handling. I survived. Some of my friends didn't.
At least this generation is finding fast cars that have greatly improved tires, brakes, and handling.
(and safety systems).
Have you considered something like the Bondurant teen driving school?

+1 Good Man!
But, you will be tempted by the dark side. Your friend in the 86 camaro 2.8 will rev his motor to try to suck you in. The hot girls in school will pull up in their beetle convertible and taunt you. You must resist! :D

Hoora!!
I'm glad to see more younger ms3 owners!! I'm 17 and feel pretty alone on these boards!
I don't pay any of the expenses for my car, which I'm sure I'll get flames for, but oh well.
I think a lot of you would be surprised as to how well I take care of my car.
But to OP, you'll love your ms3, more every time you drive it! Buy it! You'll have no regrets!
Also. Post pics!!

Oh I wasn't saying the girls would want to race. They'd just want you to make a donkey out of yourself trying to impress them ;-)

By the way, I just have the regular Mazda3i. I was going for MPG. I already have one incredible gas guzzler (see avatar) hehehe :D

For the amount of power it puts out the MPG is good.
City: 15-24
HWY: 21-29
The gaps between are because it depends greatly on how you drive it.

you have to understand that most 17 year olds dont own a 24,000 dollar car. Im 20 so im still part of the young crowd, but what ev. these are different times. Have fun with the car. Been there done that as far as having a fast car when i was 18 (Modded MSP). You will get a speeding ticket and then hopefully you will learn after just one like i did. or you could end up like my friends with 2-to many.
first thing i would do, would be get some corksport inserts, they greatly improve the car all around. then stick with mazdaspeed stuff so you can keep the warranty.

Damn punks! How can they not know what a 86 Camaro is (IROQ, Z28, *sigh*) - well if you need to be schooled in what a Chevvvvyyyy is let me know :D
Beatle shouldnt smoke you ( the drivers are usually smokin' but not the car...)
As everyone said: be safe and save the money to take it to the track... thats where the real drivers prove themselves (anyone can stomp on the gas and hit 130, not many can do so while turning and shifting and hitting apex late etc - I sure as hell cant.... end up scaring the hell out of myself)

It will depend entirely on your driving style. The car itself is probably capable of 30+ MPG just because of its small displacement and a manual transmission - depending on how it is geared.
The first time you stomp on the gas, though, everything goes out the window - especially with the turbo. If you save the power for the track, there's no reason you can't get 30mpg out of it on the highway.
My commuting vehicle uses no gas at all :D
