Sunday morning we're lying around talking and the subject of the SP3 comes up. She knows I'm trying to figure out how to budget in new rims for it.
She says, "didn't you want to get springs or something for it too?". Almost any other woman and this would be a prelude to, "you need to make up your mind what you want." Then she says, "we're selling your bike because you got tired of dodging idiots in cars who aren't paying attention. Can you buy the rims and tires if you take whatever is left over from selling the bike after we pay the note?" My ex-wife would have already had that money allocated to stuff she wanted for the house. This woman has the simple (and fair) notion that money from one of my toys should rightfully go to one of my other toys.
Later we're in the car and she asks if I decided which tires to get. I explain that I want Falken 615 but I can't even pretend that they are a reasonable year round tire for North Carolina. Fortunately, the same company makes another tire that handles almost as well and I could make them go year round (452). She thinks on that for a few seconds and says, "if you're going to get new rims, why don't you get the tires you really want on those and put winter tires on the factory rims?"
Is there any question why I love this woman?

Awww sweet :) I def agree...money from one toy should go towards another toy! I def think it's important to have hobbies (as long as your aren't drowning yourself in debt over something), so why not spend some of your extra money on something else that you love? :)

hehehe, my wife is doing almost the same...
yesterday on the way to a meet we were talking about what would be another car i would get and stuff and she goes and says she wants a black small car....i'm thinking...weren't you so against having a small car and that's the reaosn why we bought a suv?...anyways, i tell her that the only way in hell she will have a "black" car, which most likely will be a honda civic Si, will be if she learns how to drive stick....and she just smiled and said ok...
threw me off!!
fuck, now i gotta teach her how to drive stick and buy her a new car!!!
i was not expecting that

I love that commercial!
Funny that you brought up beer. I'm always looking for new beers to try.
Yesterday we checked out BJs and I got kind of lost in the electronic section, and when I look up she's down the aisle halfway down the store. I catch up and realize she's standing by the end cap for the beer section. I look down and there is a case of Sam Adams there. But it is one of those "sample" cases, with 6 different beers, 4 of each kind, and every one is a type you would only find in a specialty store, nothing run of the mill. My eyes lit up and she says, "yeah, that's why I stopped here. I figured you'd want to see that."

Def a keeper! That's why I always tell my friends to buy all your toys BEFORE you get married, otherwise, I would never be able to buy a snake, and the bike. It was there BEFORE you dear, so they are staying =p

I don't understand this whole notion of "asking for permission" or coordinating with your wife or significant other to spend money...? (huh)
(scratch)
Aren't you guys the men of the house? Don't you work hard for your money? Aren't you responsible enough to know whether you can or can not afford to spend a certain amount without affecting your allotted budget...?
I'm not married, but do live with my girlfriend...she has her bank account and I have mine. We pay all bills 50/50 and we spend money on toys!!!
Of course we are responsible and don't over spend...but if she wants something for the house...she goes out and buys it, if its something big, furniture, appliance, etc...we split it 50/50. She spends on her computer stuff (she's a tech geek), DVDs, SHOES, CLOTHES, etc...and I spend on mountain bikes and cars... She even gives me presents in form of gift cards to my favorite (car and bike) vendors... In Feb, I saw the 73" wide screen and I fell in love with it...I told my girlfriend I was going to buy it...we are paying 50/50 for it!!!! Of course, she watches it more than I do though... (lol2)
I don't know... I've spent over $3000 on my car thats less than 6 months old...no issues. And she knows all about it since she sees me wrenching and I always take her for a ride after the mod is in place... She even asks me whats next!!!! lol That could be to have an idea for gifts!!! The other day she said I was easy to shop for...bike or car...she just has to get the timing right to know which one I'm concentrating on at the time... (lol2)
I don't get it...am I missing something?

Agreed. You're not married, but you'll see. You're only spending your own money right now, not hers. Granted, she may buy you gifts, but that's different. In my situation, my wife makes more than I do, so she pays most of our bills. I pay the bills that are in my name and if I have some money left over after I put some into our savings, I may go buy myself a new car or electronic toy. I have responsibility to not only myself, but my wife as well to manage my paycheck wisely.
Having said all that, my wife is a wonderful woman. Since we've been married, we've bought a new car, TV, Nintendo Wii and various other goodies. You can buy toys, you just have to be mindful of the other person you are now legally joined with (couldn't think of another way to put it). When we got married, it wasn't like she laid down the law with "Well, things are going to be different now!". It was just the realization that I am no longer looking out for only myself.
Ok, well now I've rambled on for too long, but you get the point. Those are my thoughts, take 'em or leave 'em.

Thats been my fear all along...and I drill that to her day in, day out...
I tell her all the time that she will change and things will change as soon as I say I do. She swears up and down that she won't...that it depends on the person and the relationship...which I agree to a certain point.
Does it help my case that we both make exactly the same amount of money...?
I don't know... She likes it when I mod the car...with my latest mod a Cork Sport CBE, I had her crank the engine so that I could check for leaks under the car and she had a big grin on her face when the exhaust growled, burrbled, and popped... She also goes with me to all my autocross events, she makes food, bought a 10 foot tent thing, chairs, cooler, etc...
I hope you guys are wrong with my situation... I've seen what you guys are saying with other people/couples...but I wonder if its applies to those who have the same interests...
I see the veterans at the autocross races where the husband has the fully modded Corvette or Mustang, whatever, and is taking about getting a new engine, wheels, etc...and the wife is right there with him...
I think its different when two people are in sync...
(I hope I am not wrong...) (lol2)

More than likely, you're not wrong. If you've been with her long enough, you should know her well enough by now. :)
And not all women change when they get married, guys. I've been very supportive of my husband's hobbies, in fact, I was telling him NOT to sell his RX-7 project car when he worried it was taking up room in the garage.
I think "car modding" could be replaced with any hobby and as long as it's supported by your mate, your bills are paid, what's the harm in it?
I didn't know a thing about cars until I met my husband. And now, I'm happy to say he takes interest in my hobbies and I in his. :)

Seems like arguments typically arise about the $$ being spent b/c the other person doesn't understand why you want to buy something for "the car" (for example) b/c they aren't interested in cars and vice versa for their hobbies.
But in your case, I think things will be the same for you guys, especially b/c you do share common interests. Now, when you are married, you may be arguing over who gets what mod first lol, since it'll be your shared money to spend :)

My wife pretty much lets me do anything I want to my cars (been with her for 25 years and I am 40 so she knows I am a car crazy)but as our kids get older (read in closer to college) I have noticed I have altered my spending a bit towards the toys...

You my friend are a very lucky man! Remeber to do something nice for her as not to forget her kindness. My significant other would not tolerate that but rather divert the funds to something more home related or relative to the future.

as a married man......
Itsi sa partnership a union of 2 lives living as 1.
that means everything being spent in the house and everything earned for the hosue should at least somewhat be agreed upon.
While I have always had my hobbies and sometimes she has agreed with them and sometimes there wa some resistance but the money was always spent wisely.
You need to think.... Can this wait? Is this a the right time? how important is this?
Like others have said you need to make sure its nothing that is going to effect your way of living. Have your bills paid and food in the house and all that before you start thinking about a mod or such. becuase you are now 2 people and responsible for each other not jsut yourself

I've recently ordered the Cobb intake and the Corksport MM inserts. My wife doesn't know yet. The money is not the problem as it's MODDING the brand new car that she will resist. The last time I worked on my car, a 97 Probe GT I tried to fix somethings myself and made the car worst. She will almost certainly say "remember what happened the last time you worked on the car" I'm not a bad mechanic but she will not remember all the times I worked on our cars sucessfully, only the last time when I screwed it up. I'm not going to tell her about the mods but I'm almost certain she will notice the different sound of the Cobb intake when she drives it.
What do I tell her?

Im most definately not married
but I can notice when girls are interested in cars and when they are not....Ive dated girls that dont understand the car at all, then Ive dated girls that understand but dont care personally, then Ive dated girls that want me to teach them everything I know and want to actually help with the wrench-turning
for me, the car is a big part of me....its what I love, and something that isnt going to die out much with age....I have plenty of other skills that I can use to earn a living with, and I can manage my money wisely, but the car is one of my two major outlets that I cant get enough of (the other is playing music)
if the girl cant understand or respect that, and if she will start arguements because I wanna do stuff to my car, then I just couldnt imagine being able to get along with her...ya know?
to the O.P.: you are a lucky man! the best Ive found so far is the girls that wanna help work on the car, but yours takes it to a new level by being interested in helping decide what you wanna do next =D
just be careful that she isnt buttering you up for something bigger haha

I feel pretty lucky with my wife. She's into her Pro5 as well. Sometimes it actually sucks though, cause, I get parts for my car, and, she gets jealous, so, I gotta get the same parts for her car.
She doesn't understand the "My money from selling my bike" thing though. I sold my bike I had had for years before we got together, and, she wanted to snatch that to buy furniture for the house. Said, "Sorry, but, it was my toy, and I want the money to buy toys for my new toy."
She understands though. She's actually pushing me to find a new set of rims/tires so she can have my current ones.

I'm lucky there too. My wife is a "truckin woman". She just bought a new Quad cab Ram with the variable displacement hemi (we have three dogs and a 12 year old boy so the space comes in handy). She insists on taking the truck everywhere we go because my car isn't as comfortable for both of us at the same time (tiny little armrest/center console). Every time she starts it she says (cue shit eating grin) "I love my truck". My response is always, "that's good, because you're gonna have it a looooong time."
