View Full Version : Turbo possibly kicking the bucket...HELP

 (sad2)
Here's the story, started getting the MSP ready for summer today (changed oil, summer tires, etc...) when I finished the oil I cranked her up and let the RPM's drop a bit then started to rev her up to get the oil going, but I noticed that every time I let off the throttle as the RPM's lowered at a certain point there was a fast ticking sound coming from the engine bay that slowed as the RPM's dropped.
After following the ticking it lead me to the Exhaust mani or the turbo...which got me worried that the turbo fins are starting to rub on the housing....(encourage
has anyone else herd this ticking noise coming from that area...I already have the heat shield off so its not that and the bolts on the exhaust mani all seem to be on tight
If the fins are the problem I guess its a new turbo? or can I get just the compressor/turbine fins somewhere?

Pull the intake pipe off the cold side of the turbo and see what you have for shaft play. Any chance you have an exhaust leak giving you the ticking sound possibly at the manifold?

ticking is more something internally with the motor. i the turbo was going bad it wouldnt tick it would make a scraping sound against then walls of the compressor housing. If the ticking is going up and down with the rpms its either a rod bearing or it something in the head.

indeed. turbos dont really tick.
they make a horrid screeching noise when spinning when the housing touches or the bearing is shot (if the fins are touching, theres a good chance it can implode too, if the play is bad enough).
or they smoke, dont boost, spew oil, etc etc. its usually pretty obvious something bad is happening.

Or the tick could be coming from the alternator, a belt or pulley even. Maybe you already have but I would try to rev while someone is listening or vice versa.

Or an Exhaust leak if the sound led you to the Mani/Turbo area.

I had my head in the engine bay reving the TB by hand to find the source, So I guess its a possibility that there is a leak somewhere or maybe something in the head...at least I hope, I think i'm going to open up the head to take a look at the cams and valves make sure everything is ok in there...guess I should look at the downpipe a little closer on the turbo end make sure something isn't just loose
Thanks for the input guys I'm going to check this stuff out

i dont think it would be pulleys or alternator...that would be more of a high skweaking noise..if its ticking then i would deff check the motor or exhaust leak...i spun my rod bearing and that made a reallll loud ticking noise even inside the cabin..is it possibly your injectors or maybe your valves tapping?

How can you check shaft play??

take off the intake going to the turbo when the turbo is cold.. grab the center of the turbo shaft and pull in and out.. if it doesnt move or barely moves.. its good.

so I checked the turbo's shaft play today and its almost nothing, so I guess the turbo is good, the sound is still coming from that area though, so I'm going to check the cams and valves, specifically the exhaust cam/valves

just run the throttle cable yourself when its idling.. its up by the throttle body, you can control it and listen at the same time.. is it a loud tick? a soft fast tick? pull the valve cover off and make sure all the bolts for the cams are tight.. and check to make sure you dont have a crack somewhere in the mani..
