Since its a nice day out today I decided to start the "spring cleaning". When I was in the trunk I decided to take out the carpet for better clean and to check the spare & jack. I notice there was some sort of fluid/oil pooled around my jack, and its on the opposite side as well. Anyone else have this or know what Im talking about??? At first I thought it might be a reserve of brake fluid but its exposed and can get dirt into so it's probably not this. If anyone else knows/or has this on there car, is it normal? if not how can I go abouts fixing it???

THanks

I have heard of trunk leaks causing water to build up in those areas, is it possible it is just water that mixed up with the dirt already sitting there causing it to look oily? Apparently trunk leaks are fairly common on the protege's, I haven't had any trouble with it on mine though.

Clean the water out and clean the area. You will have mold otherwise.

Check you seals around your trunk door. Water from rain or a washing it can get in there and cause havoc to your wiring, carpet, and spare tire.

I had some water buildup where the jack was on my P5 also. I just pulled out the two plugs and flushed it. I'll have to find the leak someday.

Remove the spare now and clean it all and anti seize the hardware or it will be of no use to you in the future.

thanks for the quick responses, but I don't think it's water. It's a red fluid/oil of some sort thats too thick to be water. I took some pictures, once I figure out how post a pic all put them up, maybe it'll help solve what it is.

But why would there be trans fluid in the trunk? Unless you spilled some when you bought some bottles of new trans fluid lol

Funk, I think you're right. I showed a couple guys at work who are former mechanics and thats what they thought too, makes sense. The person I bought the car off of had the anti rust treatment done religiously.
thanks for everyone help.

Sounds like WTF! turned into good luck. We need more stories with happy endings......no that's not a massage parlor pun. Wait, OK yes it is but that's a different story.
