On my way home I heard a whine start to come from the car. I think it's coming from the transmission. It's a 2002 P5 with the manual trans. It's rpm variable. Doesn't happen when in neutral or with the clutch pushed in. The car does have miles on....ok alot of miles. I'm somewhere around 181k. It's been a while since I changed the trans fluid. Sometime last summer. I put around 40,000 on a year so it should have around that or less on the fluid. Could it be the fluid? The clutch? I bought the car with 80,000 on it and don't know if it had the original clutch or not and I haven't replaced it in my 100,000 miles. I would think I would have other symptoms if the clutch was going out. No shifting problems or the like, just the whine. When I get up to speed it appears to go away in 5th gear (60-80 mph).

Suggestions?

my tranny has always had a certain whine to it. especially in 4th gear. I have not had any trouble yet and I'm at 100,000+ miles on the original trans. I do keep an eye on it though.

*edit* try some royal purple tranny fluid. this helped me out a bit.

You've got 10 million miles on your tranny????

I have been using GM Synchromesh when I change it. Usually my signal was a rough 1-2 shift.... I'm getting the whine in all 5 gears.

I wouldn't think that manual tranny and auto should have the same whine....

lol I dont know why I didnt catch that. Maybe I need to goto bed... been up for over 24 hours and going.

Edit: I assume you have checked your fluid levels right

Just heard the whine on the way home tonight for the first time. It's parked in my garage (except when being driven and at work) and there isn't a puddle or anything. I'll take a look tomorrow. I was planning on working on my truck but it now it looks like it will be truck and car.....

No problem. I'd think this is still the original tranny. And I certainly don't see why it won't go 200,000 plus. LEt me say it certainly better go well past 200,000.... I'd be happy to see 300,000.....Another 2 years (maybe 3) and I'll be able to tell you...

I usually get the whine when it's cold outside. I figured that it's just normal...

It was a little low on fluid so we'll see if that was the cause.

It may also be your alternator. I was getting an rpm dependent whine that sounded sort of like the Jetsons space car at low rpm and disappeared at high rpm.

After poking around with a screwdriver to my ear it ended up being the alternator.

Does that mean that the alternator needs replacing?

Mine was that I was a little low on tranny fluid.
