Anyone use an exhaust cutout for racing? It seems like a very inexpensive way to get the very best flow for racing purposes.

It is specifically mentioned as being illegal in NC DMV code. YMMV.

Ok, but as long as the cut-out is not opened during street use it should be fine though correct?

However, according to the DMV website of OK, it looks like you guys don't have smog or emissions testing at all. So I'd say on the legal side, you should be gravy.

Thats what I was thinking. I guess what I'm wondering now is if this is a good idea or a bad idea. I found a cut-out online for 25 dollars so I figured what the heck, for that price, and prolly 50 or so to put it in, its a heck of a lot cheaper than any cat-back. I'm pretty much satisfied with the sound of the stock exhaust, but I want to be more competitive on the track.

where are you gonna put it?

the midpipe would fit it perfectly. I wanna put in an electric QTP one in mine when everything is said and done.

it sounsd like he's looking for PERFORMANCE out of the cutout...if so then woudlnt it have to be before the cats? at least between the two. Seems like it might be tricky to get in there. Best place would probably be remove the 2nd cat and put it in right there.

yea, but I already have an aftermarket downpipe and midpipe.

it would be impossible to put a cutout before both cats on stock turboback?

well I'm not real familiar with what our cars look like on the underside, but I figured later on I could add a cat-less down pipe, so I would add the cut-out somwhere right after the downpipe and have a muffler shop do some custom work so I could retain the second cat and factory muffler. The reason for this is that right now I'm located in OK, but, I'm in the military so who knows which state I'll be in next year, so I want something that will make it somewhat able to pass emissions, and I dont want a nagging wife over running a straight pipe the whole way. I'm really looking at getting into the drag racing scene and this seems like a real easy mod that I haven't heard alot of before.

the cut out would need to be further down the exhaust and past the 2nd cat then. there isn't any room for a cut out to go in between the 1st and 2nd cats. they're about 18" apart and have a flange in between them (connects the midpipe and downpipe).

hhmm I wonder if I could have a custom midpipe made then because with the addition on the catless downpipe I want it to be straight through for racing but still have a cat so I dont get that smell associated with straight pipes.

Im looking at getting an electric cutout also, would it be possible to get a custom test pipe and have the cutout welded in there and just dump it under the car?
heres what i was thinkin about: http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?autofilter=1&part=QTP%2DQTEC30&N=700+4294923429+4294865462+115&autoview=sku

I've been looking at that exact same cut-out. I think I'm going to go with a CS downpipe then have a muffler shop mate up a custom "test pipe" so it can dump right after the DP then re-integrate with factory tubing maybe minus a resonator just for giggles.

thats what i was thinking also...minus the aftermarket DP. im just worried about the cutout leaking when its supposed to be closed.

You could always go with a manual closing one, then you are insured that it stay's sealed all the time, but it'd be a pain to open or close it.
