View Full Version : Strange whining noise

I was driving at about 70 mph on the highway this last Saturday when I noticed a loud whining noise coming from my car.

The noise starts at about 50mph and gets steadily louder as speed increases. It sounds a lot like tire road noise, but I don't understand why it would start so randomly. I replace my tires about 6 months ago and noise has only started now.

This loud whining noise is the same whether the car is in gear or in neutral; it seems to be entirely speed related. Could it be just road noise from the tires? I'm confused. I thought maybe it might be the LSD, but most people whose LSDs have failed said they only heard whining when the car was in gear.

Any ideas? I'm driving to Boston this Saturday (8 hour drive) so I'm a bit nervous. I'm heading to the dealership for a new timing belt (I've got 76k on the car now) but that's just maintenance and I don't think it's the problem since the noise is related to speed and doesn't change even if I go to neutral and the RPMs drop to idle.

Thanks.

could be wheel bearings

could be wheel bearings

But if it were the wheel bearings, wouldn't the noise be there at all speeds (especially while turning), and not just when I'm above 50mph?
