I'm looking for an exhaust system that sounds good but won't kill my wallet. Does anyone know how the MSP exhaust sound?

depends on which one ur going for..the msp exhaust is from the mazdaspeed protege which was made by racing beat.<-this one is the one most people run if u can find one. in ur thread title u put "mazdaspeed exhaust sound" which can also be taken as the mazdaspeed exhaust the dealer offers. either way, it'll both sound good. people say the one the dealer offers is a bit loud and drones but to me it isnt that loud and i've never had a problem wit droning. i get compliments all the time hehe

i'm one of the people who say that the mazdaspeed sport axleback drones like a mofo. at 75mph, it sucked. especially in a protege5.

the axleback is loud, but its designed to be. its a love/hate relationship with that part i've found. i like the way it looks but not the way it sounds.

well...for mazdaspeed axleback...city driving is great, highway bearable.
msp axleback...soon will find out, need to cut the tip first

Usually the hands down favorite exhaust is the Racing Beat cat-back, followed by the Magnaflow and the Corksport.
You might be able to piece together a custom exhaust at a local exhaust shop fairly cheap.

i'm one of the other guys with the racing beat axel back. i bought it cause its quiet, and it is. i wish it was louder. maybe when i change the mid pipe and cat it be louder but not irritating cause i hop on the freeway every day. does anybody know the diameter of the stock exhaust?

msp piping is 2.5" and regular protege/p5 is 2.25" I believe?

i think i read from some where that the msp piping and p5 piping are the same, except msp midpipe has 2 cats intead of one. I could be wrong tho.

Yea, I'm not sure, I've read that the P5 is shorter than the sedan and so is the piping but I don't know by how much.
whitemp5seattle
03-11-2008, 03:24 AM
p5 is shorter by about 6"
vicham
03-11-2008, 05:10 AM
well...the difference in length is at the muffler tip not in the piping

So all you would have to do is replace the tip for it to fit between each one. Right?

right. just take it to an exhaust shop and have them cut off about 6" off the piping just before the tip and reweld the tip back on. I had this done when they were installing it to make sure they cut off the right amount.

I'm hopefully going to be getting the Axle-back mazda speed for my protege. Drove a Mazda 3 with that exhaust and loved the sound.

You drove a Mazda 3 with a Mazdaspeed axle back? Interesting. The 3 and the Protege have 2 very different motors so they won't sound the same. They might sound similar, but not the same.

I know they aren't going to sound the same, but it does give a rough idea. I work at a Mazda dealership and the Mazdaspeed axle back is one of the best sounding axle backs that I've heard come through on any car. Of course the cars with a full cat-back system sound the best(and probably are better performance wise), but I'm getting this pretty cheap.

hmmm, that's interesting. Mostly people have been saying to go with something other than mazdaspeed, but now someone is saying to go with it. I'm not sure.

Well in the end its all personal preference. Also, when the price is right it's harder to say no eh?

I have the sedan, but I thought that the speed axle back fit both. Pm me with details and we can maybe work something out.

both will fit but the lengths will be different. the p5 is 6 inches or so shorter than the sedan.so if u put a p5 exhaust on, it will probably be way too short.if u do get one, they have 2 types(sedan and p5). look for a sedan one.

oh, then my exhaust won't fit on your car since p5 exhaust is shorter than sedan

finally replace my mazdaspeed axleback with msp axleback....it's so much quieter, now im thinking that it's too quiet but love the fact my ears won't hurt anymore when i go uphill or on highway...miss the nice deep rumble sound during take off and the cut off sound when i shut off the engine tho
looks like my next mod would be header to get the noise back and little bit more power
el_Don

yea headers would be great. I'm thinking about getting some from ebay or something. I think the OBX headers would be alright, I know others have bought them and said that their cool.

i like how the mazdaspeed axle-back sounds, its gets annoying on long freeway drives sometimes though. but ive been thinking about it and ive come up with a solution....
oh how i wish to have a 6th gear. i feel too limited by 5 lol :)

well i just installed the MSP axle-back on my 1.6l protege and love it. I have gotten plenty of compliments on it from others already. I can take a sound clip later today for anyone looking for one. I have heard it on the 2.0l and its a bit louder but same tones.

Mines from a MP3, same as the 03 model MSP. Love it! It's pretty quiet while cruising, but has a nice deep tone that's noticeable when accelerating.

is the MP3 and 03 msp the same muffler as the 03.5 just a different tip, I have never actually looked at the 03 muffler

Yes, the design of the tip and the labeling (Racing Beat vs. Mazdaspeed) is the only difference.

I'm looking to trade up or buy a Racing beat MSP Muffler. I have a Ractive Black Chrome Exhaust which sounds good, but not what I was really aiming for. I wish I could keep this Ractive Muffler and get the sound that i want outta the Racing Beat, cause Aesthetically the Ractive is a better bargin. Check out my Thread
"I'm lookin' to buy or trade which ever comes first..."
Pardon the temporary Thread jack! LOL
