okay, i had planned to install my turbocharger this weekend, but i had heard from someone last night that i will have to get a stand-alone engine management system. the guy said that if i didn't i would burn up my engine by running it too lean, and that the stock ecu would not be able to handle the amount of air. and i was wondering if this was true.

You'll need an EMS if you're going turbo. The stock (non-turbo) ECU (among other things) won't manage enough fuel to supply demand, so your "guy" is on the right track of advice.

I'm certainly not the guru when discussing forced induction, but i've wanted to boost my p5 since i've owned it.

That said, based on what i've read here you do not need a full stand-alone engine management (ie haltech, etc), at least not at lower boost levels..., you could swap in a ecu from a MSP and be safe. (again at low/stock msp levels of boost).

Of course, you'll be seduced to the dark side and want to go higher and higher in boost where you'd probably benefit from a full standalone/supporting mods/tune lest you join the zoom zoom boom club.

Please, somebody correct me if i'm wrong.

Wow dude are you serious? You need to do a lot more homework before bolting a turbo on your car... Your engine would last maybe a few minutes with a turbo just slapped on it.
