On my Dad's MZ3i: Cleaned and lubed all the brake slider pins, changed front pads, flushed and bled with new ATE Super Blue brake fluid, changed oil and changed cabin air filter.

Only aggravations:
1. Darn brake calipers needed a 7mm allen. Had all BUT a 7mm in the toolbox so had to run out to get one.
2. Rear and front brake bleeder screws being different sizes. The fronts were a smaller size which was the ONLY one not included in my line wrench set!
3. Offset oil filter hole. It wasn't my car so I didn't want to cut away at the splash shield for a straight shot which would make it considerably less messy.

Next on the list will be a 2.0 oil filter adapter to go onto my MZ3 GT hatch.

Installed clear bra on the speed3. Took almost four hours! Use the Invisiblemask non 3m with the lifetime warranty. Kind of a bi icth! but turned out well, had one on my previuos g35 and loved it. btw, speed3 much more fun ride than g35, especially since the g35 was using about 2 qts. every 1500 miles. traded before the tsb engine replacement was needed...

Three months after owning the 3HB, I finally started the upgrades. Start off trading an old laptop for some decent 18" RX8 Wheels with 225/45/18 Michellin tires. I ended up saving enough $$$ to change them to 225/40/18 Kuhmo AST's since I was planning on lowering the car using TEIN's that I bought from a guy locally for $85! (they aren't the fake ones from Ebay).

Here's the result of the upgrade from this weekend, and yes I am aware that the car is dirty! Been raining here a lot =) which we could all use...

They look NIIICCCCEEEE, Man!!! Taking your time really paid off, IMO.
Beautiful job!!
I need a G2 for mine. The Dupli-Color stuff chips and I get tired of the touch-ups all the time. That stuff should last 5-6 years between touch-ups.

wolverine_man
05-25-2008, 10:43 PM
Thanks for the compliment. I found that the G2 system was pretty user friendly, except for having to evenly divide the activator and paint to mix different batches. I did that very carefully. I didn't want the stuff drying up before I got to the last wheel. Also, taking your time to do a good job taping parts you don't want painted is also key. I got a couple tiny specs on the black part of the brake on the rear, but I was able to scrape it off quickly.

I hope it holds up. I only did 2 coats on each caliper. So far, so good. I do have extra activator and paint in case I need to do some touch up work. However, there is a shelf life on the paint.

This has been a work in progress but I finally have a panel complete, from laying the fiberglass to paint to install. The gauges are just for test fitting and not what I will actually install. I need to make a few minor adjustments still but tell me what you think, I'm considering doing this in carbon fiber as well. I will have extras for sale if anyone wants them...:D

Replaced my stock Toyo Proxes with brand new Toyo Proxes 4's the other day when I had it in at the dealer and they told me my road vibration was my tires badly worn on the inside.

They remind me a little of the old VW GTI gauges, which were mounted too low to really use. My feeling is that you'll never use them there because they will destract you too long from looking at the road.
I'd mount them much higher as I did mine. On the dash or an "A" pillar mount.
It's a bad picture as I wasn't focusing on the gauges when I ook it, but like this:

If you're turbocharging your motor, this isn't the greatest place to mount gauges. I don't smoke and have no use for the ashtray so I decided I wanted to mount a set of gauges there. I'll only need to glance at them after each auto-x run and I only do a few track days a year so this is nice and clean. This panel was pretty popular on another forum but the guy who was making them stopped so I decided I would pick up where he left off.
The center dash vent mount is my next project just to see what I can do.

can you tell a difference at all? I've heard stories saying yes and no

yes I have notice a difference but whether its for good or bad I'm not sure yet. First thing I notice is how stiff the car feels. From the steering wheel, shifter, gas pedal and even the brakes. Before everything felt loose but now it feels tight. More of a solid feeling. When it comes to accelerating the car feels slighty slower but then again honestly I can't tell. The exhaust note has gotten deeper but not by much. Enough to notice a difference. Overall I am pleased with the mod. Next is the ETD.

bbrich57
07-12-2008, 03:04 PM
Not hard at all... it's keeping them that way that's the headache. Between the sun and the stone chips, unavoidable w/every day driving, you'll have your hands full.
If you plan to strip the chrome plating first, there's a How-To on here somewhere...? I did and just left them that way. It's gives you kind of a marbled effect which I thought just different enough.
As much as I liked the look of the deep red I had mine, it was taking way too much time and energy to keep mine in that color... 3-4 times a year and an all-day/two-day affair.

I think I envy you. A cable throttle!!! I'm beginning to wish I'd never heard of ETBs. They are unmanageable and unchangeable... w/o a good tuner (and lotsa' $$$) that knows how to get around that.
Is your new car a 2.3L (SP23) w/5-sp, I would assume?
Congrats Sims!!

And krimsonviper, the 180 speedo should have been a tip off too... 'course that's km/hr, not mph.
And though you can't see it, the handbrake is next to the driver in his instead of across the console... a plus for those wanting to use it to steer the car in the slippery stuff.

Sims
07-19-2008, 11:51 PM
Yep its a 2.3. I've been quite pleasantly surprised with how it gets along. Bar some slightly stiffer springs it would be a blast to trash around a track, for a standard "economy" car. Found it breaks loose very easily in the wet. So hopefully some 8" wide toyos help with that.
:)

bbrich57
07-20-2008, 07:30 AM
I you want to throw her around a track, I wouldn't put those 8 wheels on. Those things are heavy!! Go lighter weight for better handling and overall preformance.
And if the OE Goodyear's ore still on there, yeah, by all means replace them. They SUCK!! Almost anything would be an improvement.

I've been getting really pissed at this tire shine that I put on the car, Armorall Extreme Tire Shine Gel, because it took me at least 15 minutes to do one wheel and it slings so bad that it actually got on the top of the rear bumper step plate, the rear glass, MY ROOF, and all the way up to the bottom of the windows...and a bit on the windshield, THE WINDSHIELD!!! WTF?!!?!??!?!?!?!?!?!?

Anybody got suggestions for non-slinging/minimal sling tire shine?

And I put in my high flow air filter by Simota.

It's an Auto Exe knock off. I went back to the stock grill since as the AE really needs paint to be right.
I considered 18's and do like the way they look, but for the 3-3.5lbs more apiece that they weigh I stayed w/17's. I wanted to see what a little unsprung weight savings would do for the car. Unfortunately, the Kumhos I'm running, are a littler heavier than the Falkens I was running, so the savings is only about 2.5lbs/corner. I was hpoing for more.
When did you get yours?

Nice!! You had to cut the flex from the pre-cat to remove?
What's the anti-fouler trick?
Also, why the Draxas vs. the Vibrant?
The Vib would be a better street header, imo. More low-mid range, but the Drax is a nice piece also.
Any CELs?

Thanks! IMO cutting it makes it SO much easier to remove instead of loosening the rear engine mount and the passenger side mount. The anti fouler trick helpd eliminate CEL you get when running a header. Majority of people who ran a draxas header and did the anti fouler trick haven't recieve a CEL or only got it once but after a reset it went away.

After listening to the different cars that are running the vibrant header & draxas header, I started to like how the Draxas header sound at WOT. The sound of the vibrant header turned me off a lil but then again it also matters what exhaust your running as well. Since I installed the header on my car the sound hasn't increased that much.

Thanks! Overall the set up feels great. I'm not exactly sure what gains I recieved but the car pulls hard above 3.5k for an n/a 3. I already have an I/E/BSD so the header was a great addition. Within a couple of weeks I will be dynoing my car. (headbang)

bro congrats on ur headers! looks nice! any chance you have or you could make any video clips of how it sounds? let me know thanks!!
how long did it take you to do? I'm in the progcess of putting one together. 1st attempt took more then 4 hours since I stripped the 1st O2 sensor and then I wasn't able to remove the stock manifold. I gave up and I was also missing a few other items. lol My 2nd attempt only took 30 minutes to an hours. I spent most of that time doing the anti fouler trick and cutting the pipe.

akaveli... if you had taken your hood and cowling off you didn't have to cut the header to get it out... also why didn't you consider the thunder?

The hood and the cowling wasn't in the way. The screw studs in the engine block was the issue. I didn't have enough clearance to get it out of the engine bay. The only options I had was cutting the pipe or loosening the mounts and shifting the engine forward. I decide to take the fastest route. snip snip :)

I was considering the New thunder catted header but they didn't come out yet and they are still in the testing phase with another 3 member. So Draxas was the next best thing for me.

[Copied from another post, but it was my post, so permission was easy to secure. :D Here goes...]

Just got a set of Goodyear UltraGrip GW3 winters on 16" steelies set up on Jazzy. Stark difference between them and the stock Eagle RS-A's, which started to suck about a month ago when the temperature started to stay down around freezing. Recently the RS-A's had the traction/ABS kicking in when trying to accelerate any faster than, say, molasses or trying to brake, well, at all in light snow (<0.5 in. unpacked). With the GW3's I have to accelerate/brake pretty hard (~60%?? (how should one measure pedal pressure meaningfully in this context?)) to get the traction/ABS to kick in in the exact same situations.

So, GW3's == awesome! (2thumbs)

I was a little worried about how the cops would feel about them around here, and they do always look. I have passed maybe 60 cops since install in January and so far, so good!!
They wouldn't fit beneath w/o some trimming of the bumper cover. There was just enough room on the top. You might also run into some trouble with the headlight mounting flange on the bottom? It would be a lot harder, and some professional bodywork/paint would likely be required.

No problem!
Putting them on hte bottom wouldn't be too bad...I mean if you mount them so they're in the way of the headlight a little then you shouldn't have much problem, but that's just my opinion.

Thanks for the compliments guys! The grille is the one you see on ebay from Kakumei-Motorsports, Buy-It-Now for $80. Only problem is that they charge $40 shipping when it's really only $14.75! (nuts)

I liked the Mazdaspeed version but it's a lot more expensive. This one is similar for less money. My main concern was fitment. Another grille on ebay, similar to this one but cheaper, had fitment issues so I went with this one eventhough it was twice as much (still 1/2 the price of the Mazdaspeed--including the shipping!). I read a couple of feedbacks from buyers that had bought this grille and one of them remarked that it fit great. So I got it.

It is made of fiberglass and comes painted with white primer. I had a body shop that I deliver to (UPS driver) paint it black mica to match the car and they remarked how they were impressed that there weren't any small pinholes in the primer that are apparently common with aftermarket fiberglass parts. So kudos to Kakumei-Motorsports for that!

Fitment is good but not as perfect as the OEM grille. Just a little bit bigger gap along the top compared to the OEM. Not a big deal, I'm just being picky. Nobody's gonna notice it. Had to drill the holes in the hood a little bigger to accomodate the included bolts. The only concern I have is that the bottom of the grille is a little flimsy. It uses the bottom part of the OEM grille that is molded on the
5-door's front bumper for support. When you pop the hood, you naturally grab the bottom of the grille to lift and if you aren't careful I could see the thing breaking or cracking. However, if you know about it then it shouldn't be a problem. Overall, I'm very pleased with the way it turned out. Thanks again for the compliments!

Here's the link to the ebay auction:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=360068857336&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWAX%3AIT&viewitem=

Edit on the fitment: Looks good but bottom tip of the Kakumei-Motorsports grille rubs on the bumper cover. Not really a huge issue unless you switch back to OEM grille. Then there will be a mark rubbed through the paint on the bumper cover just in front of the bottom of the stock grille.

I am hoping that my copper red spray paint, partplaza eyelids, and laminx headlight and fog film come this week so I can install them and paint my engine cover to match the car.

Inspected my car. Checked out what has to be fixed still and made a list...gonna take it back to Mazda soon.

Oh! Also rolled to about 200 miles from the infamous 5K mark and first service.

So, by "Iced", do you mean the Turtle Wax Ice interior conditioner? If so, have pics? I've been wondering how it would look, worried that it would look "ArmorAll'ed".

Sweet! Who makes yours?

im not too sure, i bought it from a guy parting his car out...

i know he said he got it off ebay, other than that im not too sure... should come in this week so ill test fit it and hope i dont have to do alot of work to get it to fit well

Edit: tearing off my dual tone horns as soon as i can get home from work cause;
A) sounded nothing like described by the vendor, supposed to sound like Hella Supertones, instead mine sounded like a dying goose
B) after about 2.5 months the high tone stopped working today and im left with a very embarrassing low tone only...

sunrun176- Yes I mean turtle wax ice interior care, it works great. I like it way better then AA. I'll try and post some picts. Interior Ice has a nice clean smell, good shine, but not over the top.

^^^ Where are the pics? ^^^
Mine need it so bad, but I am waiting to do the entire brake system w/new cross drilled rotors and EBCs.
Besides, the weather 'round here has been questionable at best lately.
Did you use the G2 epoxy paint?

Nope. I used caliper spray paint from Autozone.

Forgot to post about a month ago when I swapped out the winter steelies for the factory set.

Got a decent jack and jack stands from Northern Tool & Equip. and a beam torque wrench from Sears (which performs adequately and actually has a lifetime warranty, unlike most of their other more expensive torque wrenches).

Doing it myself was most satisfying.

15K service: oil & filter change, front & rear brake inspection. Will rotate tires this weekend. (I really need to get a radio for the garage..)

Also plan on giving it a good wash this weekend.. we'll see... There are some tar trails on the driver's side "rocker panel" area all along the front door and on the rear wheel. (Should've taken the alternate route that morning, I guess.) I'm hopeful that the SimpleGreen wash will take it off, but if it doesn't I'll probably end up getting the exterior professionally detailed when I get the interior detailed.. Might budget that for once/year.

Rotated tires front to back and gave them a good washing in the process (I really hate Road Construction Season), which took much longer than I anticipated. Wish I had something to take off all the little tar spots.. fingernailing them makes them smear and Bug Tar (the Turtle Wax product) doesn't seem to do anything but smell bad. Any suggestions?

P.S. Commandeered the radio for use in the garage. Much better! (headbang)

Go to an automotive paint store and get some of their mild surface prep. I used to work for Sherwin Williams Automotive Paints and they had a product (R7K-148, I believe) that I got in a quart. I'm sure Dupont or PPG have their own similar product. Anyway, it worked wonders on tar and bugs! Just dab a little on a terry cloth towel and wipe!

Just did the HD lip today. Wish I would have used the tape all the way around though not just segments. Would have looked better. Oh well, still looks good I think
