so...my 03 es has about 75,000 miles on it now, and it seems to have picked up a rattle when accelerating. right around 3,000 rpms and then again around 4,000 rpms. i thought it was a heat shield, but i got under it and it's all still tight. i thought maybe the exhaust has broken free inside, which may be, but also today, i walked behind the car and it smelled like raw eggs for a second. could the problem be my cat? i know a great check on this would be to blow about $500 on a catback system with a high flow cat, but i don't want to spend that much money. any suggestions or ideas?

Your catalyst "could" have broken free.

You could spend $500 on a cat-back system, but then you'd still have the problem with the cat. You could spend money on a catted mid pipe. Or you could just buy a high flow cat (less than $200) and get that welded into place.
