First post - and BTW, awesome site. Thanks to Killer for leading me here(eekdance)
I'm thinking about buying a 2003 6i. I really liked to car upon a test drive, but I do have one worry. I owned a 2001 Acura CL, with a transmission similar to the 4AT on this car. I know that on the 5AT with sport shift in the CL there was an engineering problem in which 2nd gear would overheat, and the trans would fail. Has there been any problems such as this with the 4AT with sport shift in the 6?
Also, anyone who could shed any light on other problems with the 03 6i would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance...

There is a TSB that corrects a 1-2 shift shock. I don't know of any failures, but I'm pretty new to the 6 world myself.
TSB: 2.3 6i ATX 1-2 Shift Shock
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
TSB: 05-009/05
APPLICABLE MODEL(S)/VINS
2003 - 2005 Mazda6 2.3L vehicles with automatic transmission
DESCRIPTION
Some vehicles may exhibit 1st - 2nd shift shock under light to medium acceleration when engine temperature is cold or during warm-up. The TCM logic has been revised to correct this concern.
Customers having this concern should have their vehicle repaired using the following repair procedure.
REPAIR PROCEDURE
1. Reboot the WDS PTU to clear memory before reprogramming.
2. Using WDS B37.3 P5 or later software, reprogram the TCM to the latest calibration (refer to "Calibration Information" table) by following the "Module Reprogramming" procedure.

Welcome. I owned a 2003 Acura CL.
The transmission problem you are referring to was fixed on a recall which put an oil jet in the transmission to improve the oil flow over the gears and kept things cooler.
I haven't heard anything about problems with the Mazda auto trannies. They are certainly more smooth than the clunky Acura ones.

Well, the oil jet certainly was on a recall. I think we could debate about whether it actually did anything, though. I know quite a few people that, oil jet notwithstanding, still had multiple failures with that damn gear.

my mom and sister both have TLs w/5AT - 2000 & 2001 - wouldn't those have the same tranny as the CL? my mom has put I think 170k on hers without tranny issues

She is VERY lucky. For every one of her, I can point to five who have replaced their trans multiple times in that amount of road time.

Yes, they have the same tranny.
It really doesn't matter though. That's old news, I haven't really heard of any issues with the AT trannies on a 6.
