View Full Version : Evo owner looking at MS6's!

Hey all! My names Tripp and I currently drive an 03 Evo VIII. I actually looking into getting a MS6 to have something a little more luxurious, but still fast and fun! I drove one when they first came out, but couldn't find one in my price range when I bought the Evo. I in no way regret buying the Evo, but I'm 22 and wanting something a little less boy racer-ish.

If i do end up buying one it'll be in a few months, but I wanted to find out more about the cars such as reliability (hear its really good), where to get aftermarket parts (all I know is ExtremeTurboSystems cause they are big in the Evo and Supra world and build MS6 stuff too), and whats a good tuning system to use. With the Evo's you can just tune the stock ECU and make 600hp with the right supporting mods (not looking to make that much power anyways lol). From what i've seen you need to use a piggyback for the MS6. I'd appreciate any info you can give me and hope all goes well and I end up being a MS6 owner!

22 and you want to get away from the boy racer car. damn. some people grow up too fast. then again all I've been thinking about is ripping my damn spoiler off so i guess I see your point. the ms6 is prolly alot less 'heat' on the street. I got pulled over 3 times last weekend for no reason whatsoever. ran my registration and insurance. let me leave. what a pain in the ass.

Right now is a good time to buy one. There is a $4,000 rebate on them right now. The dealership that I got mine at had 18 of them in stock in just about any color you wanted. There were more sports than grand touring.

I say what your wanting your going in the right direction, heres a couple things though you will find modding a MS6. After market is very small compared to evos, piggy backs is 100% right and closest thing we might get thats better then a piggy back is COBB which who knows that will be released. I'd say reliablity is just as much as an EVO to be honest. My Best friend/Room mate actully has an EVO 8 also, and he always eggs me on to get an Evo. I always tell him, I love my car already though, no reason to get rid of my mazda. There are some usual weakpoints on a mazda though, like rear differential mount is loose from the get go, and can rip out. Although I've heard evo do the same thing also. And then the turbo seals blow pretty easy, atleast on the earlier model mazda6s. I drive mine hard every day, and Its still going strong.

Likely no COBB tuner for the MS6...

SEARCH!

Dude, please do a search...you will find threads and threads of great info.

Ive never had an ms6 but if its anything like my ms3 you will love it. I came from an 05evo 8 and this car is way nicer to drive. Creature comforts are always a plus. You will not get the performance you got outa an evo but with some springs, intake, and exhaust you will have a very fun, quick, and appealing car to drive. At that point you would be as fast as an evo 9 stock. Good for high 12s with a good driver and still be rolling with CRUISE CONTROL AND AND NAV! Just dont jump into an ms6 if you want anything faster than mid 12s or you will be pushing the rods through the side of the motor. Its probably very comparible to an 03 evo if you are on stock turbo still. My 05 evo responded very well to mods. With tbe, fuel pump and safc i went 12.2@ 113mph. With those mods an ms6 will be good for 12.8@ 106mph.

Well let me tell you my lil story, my buddy has an arrest me red evo 8, love the car its fast and handles nice, but also has its downsides: road noise poor interior quality, NO CRUISE, mr is without any sunroof, and they are EVERYWHERE. I wanted something different. I bought my 07 MS6 and LOVE it. Its different, i paid 8g less than he did, get better gas milage, have nicer system, bigger rims and tires, beter seats (imo) for long drives, and my insurance is alot alot cheaper.

There are tons of people like Killer on the Evo forums and in my defense I did search, but couldn't find a clear answer, so I asked.

To everyone else thanks for the replies. That cleared up alot of the questions. I actually went ahead and just checked my insurance for the MS6 yesterday and it dropped 40 bucks a month lol. That was just another bonus!

Reliability would be a good thing, but if its just as good as the Evo thats fine too as I've had no problems with mine so far. I also have a degree in automotive technology, so I do the majority of my own work. The other reason I started doing a search for a MS6 was a friend of mine was running his Evo VIII with the same mods I was looking at doing (20g turbo upgrade, meth injection, cams, etc) and he actually shattered his #4 piston. I know this was probably just a manufacturing defect, but his VIII has half the miles mine does.

Its still up in the air as when/if I decide to either buy the MS6 or do the upgrades to the Evo ill also be buying a YZF-600 or GSX-R 600, so that will help me keep the mileage off the Evo for the majority of the year and has sorta put my mind at ease about the reliability issue of the car. None the less thanks for all the help and i'll try to contribute to the board as much as I can!

Hey Tripp, first off welcome and its nice to see some younger guys going after more mature cars. I'm also 22 and when I sold my Protege and got my MS6, I wanted something that wasn't as obnoxious or "boy-racerish" if you will. Depending on where you live, you might have a tough time finding one. When I purchased mine on Jan 18, I had the complete listing in the midwest, and there wasn't much to choose from. There were 4 in MI, and I was told (not confirmed) there were only 50+ left in the country. I settled on a Sport, the closest GT they could get me was in N. Dakota. If you're in the market, now's the time to buy, you can get them the same or cheaper than a MS3 and with more std. equipment. Happy hunting, keep us informed!

What? What does translate to in what one would be paying? 23k? I know there are still a couple left around here. What kind of deals do you guys think one could get these days?

I've found tons of em! I'm not looking for a new one though if thats what your talking about. I've found one that I'm really liking thats about 200 miles from me. I can't remember the color, but its got navi, leather, heated seats (so its a GT model) and only 13k for 22,500! I about wet myself when I saw the price and mileage! lol

To be honest I had a MS6 that I could have gotten for a straight up trade for my Evo, but it didn't have leather and thats a huge selling point for me. It was an 06 Maroon, with only 3k on it. Sorta regretting it lol.

<<<----19 here...

But the MS6 is reliable car to say the least. I do have a feeling that alot more products will surface around the aftermarket community. Over time their will def. be a standalone, but we have to be patient. GL though!

there is a dealer in chicago with 20 mazdaspeed6s sitting on the lot, prices slashed to the point of dumping these bad boys, even GTs.

Do they have a website!? Id be willing to fly out and drive it back (I live in Reno). Also how much slashing? What would I be looking at for a GT?

Dang, I'm kind of thinking of a MS6...but love my MSP and the handling I mean it's probably nothing like the MS6s All wheel drive system...it's just fun and I've got used being able to go into hard turns with the MSP plus barely anyone has it.
Mine is payed off too....

maybe cause it got discontinued? xP mazdaspeed cars only come in like 2 to 2 1/2 yr life spans(last yr was '07?). too bad they dont still have it but a new mazdaspeed6 is already on the horizon from what press releases are saying. <-dont quote me on that..haha

Oh, okay too bad the website doesn't even list 07MS6s at avilable dealerships. I wonder what they're gonna change on the new 2009 MS6??

Man, I'll see what can be done, MazdaUSA Website via KellyBlue Book said I could get $12,050 for my MSP. But I can also part-out so I'll get some more money. Seeing I'm in college I think it may be difficult...Just have to wait a while and see.

But even better is that I got it for invoice plus the $4,000 off. Which pretty much covered what I owed on my Subie and what they gave me for trade. So if you want to look at it this way I got the car for a savings of $6,162, based on a purchase at MSRP.

I ended up paying about 20k for mine, although the sticker was $29,195. S-plan took it down to 27,155, then $4000 off, then down payment took it down to 20,155. Not bad at all.

Thanks guys! I'm normally a coupe kind of guy. But the lines of the MS6 are really nice. And if I could score one for less and MS3 I'd probably jump on it!

thats a highly debated thought that there will be an 09 MS6. more than likely, there will NOT be one.

i have seen those pics, but based on every other Mazdaspeed vehicle that has come out, this will probably not make it to production until 2011 at the earliest. they have never come out in the first year of a new model/redesign. Also, the MS6 was such a horrible flop sales wise for Mazda, it would shock me to see it hit the US market anyway.

I agree and it surprised me as to how poor the sales are on the MS6, but the MS3 seems to be selling quite well. I know the MS3 is faster, but its FWD, nothing wrong with that AT ALL and seems to be better on road courses than the MS6, but the MS6 seems more practical to me. Maybe its because I now live in an area that gets a good deal of snow, but even when I lived in GA i would much rather have the MS6. I dont know what the problem with the MS6 was... Great cars though.

It was probably due to Mazda barely advertising the car.

the problem with the ms6 is that it was priced at the same level as entry level 3-series BMWs, and marketed very similarly. most people that are spending that kind of money would go for the status symbol of the BMW. personally, I love my car and its a perfect fit for me. a little more grown up, very refined, and still fast :)

oh, and the MS3 runs a 14.2 quarter, where the MS6 runs a 14.0 (approximate of course, ymmv) but yes, the MS3 destroys MS6s in road course, autox, etc

i'm sure thats partially it, but they didn't advertise the mp3, msp, or msm, and those all sold very well.

Anyone remember the first gen concept of the Mazdaspeed 6, the one with the 7 spoke wheels? I think it ended up being made from accessory parts, like the MS RX-8 stuff.
