Need thoughts on used 1.6l 99 Protege

Hey all, need someinfo/opinions.

We're looking for a used car for my little brother and we happened upon a nice 99 Protege DX.

It has 130k miles on it, body is in great condition as is the interior. They will sell it to us for $3400.

Now, i dont know much about the 1.6l motor it has so please fill me in on your thoughts on the car in question.

The motor ran great, no ticks or other bad engine noise and it drove just as well, so as far as i can tell it was a great car.

Please let me know anything you have to say, bad or not about this year/engine combo.

Stock internals are stronger than the 2.0 FS and can handle a decent amount of boost. I believe Goldpro had 225 whp on his before he sold it.

lol yeah, i thought i remember that the 1.6 enjoys boost a lot more...

lol im guessing being that this is a 3rd gen, that the suspension layout is the same as my MSP/P5 correct?

Most of it is the same. The MSP/P5 layout has beefier swaybars, different struts. PM negatize, he has the nicest 99 Sand Mica that I know of. He can give you a better explanation on whats compatable.

just so you know, the 1.6L is SLOOOOW :p

but yeah suspension-wise it's nearly identical to all the other 3rd gens since you know, it technically IS a 3rd gen Protege...

Dru test-drove a '99 Protege DX in an auto way back in the day, and that was one of the scary-slowest cars either of us have ever been in!

my parents have a 99lx with the 1.6 and it has 220,000+ miles on original motor. its been through 2 transmission though. its an auto.

They will last but...Naahhh, if you can choose not to. find him a 240sx.
