Finally got a semi update on when we should see a new map disk. This is from one of the customer service representatives from Mazda:
The 2006 map disk is the most current available as of now. We are expecting to get an updated version some time this quarter. Please keep in contact with your local dealer to see when they will have it available.
Again, thank you for contacting Mazda.
Regards,
Lisa H.

Hopefully we'll see that soon!!
It has been available for quite some time. I got one from eBay. The part # is MAZDA Part No. GP9A 66 DZO C (K4238)

Are you sure that disc on ebay was actually the updated one ? Looking at the copyright dates on the disc and sleeve I think it shows 2005/2006 ?

That is the same disc that came with my CX-7 that was manufactured in the fall of 2006. I don't believe it's the updated disc.
Did you guys ever read the eBay description? He has a different pic used which is for ...DZOB and the auction was for...DZOC which is the updated disc. I confirmed this from Mazda and is the updated disc with 2007 map updates. If it turns out that this is not the latest, I would have still bought it since my GPS Map is the DZOA variant. I'll update you guys once I got it loaded.
By the way, any ideas as to how you will load this disc? I know that the DVD player is under the passenger seat. If I can't, of course, I will bring it to the dealership.

There's a bracket bolted down there that's hiding the eject button. Simple as removing the bracket and pressing the button.
And for comfirmation, GP9A-66-DZ0C is the most current update.

There's a section right at the beginning of the Navigation manual that describes how to eject and put in the DVD.
I'll have to take a look at what I've got in my '08 CX-7. Since I just picked it up last week I would hope it has the latest DVD.

Sorry, I didn't bother to read. Anyone selling something should be using a real picture of their actual goods, not an inaccurate representation.
I wouldn't even be willing to bid on that item based on the difference between the description and the photo.

When my salesman was going over how to use some of the features of the car he swore up and down that only the dealership could eject the DVD. I found that section about an hour later. Nothing useful to the post, just bringing back humorous memories....
I got confirmation from the seller that he used a different pic and in fact selling the DZOC update so he gave me a discount and sold the disc for $35...not bad for something that will sell for $150.

The real test would be the version. The version in the Mazda CX-7 right now is 6.1. The latest one for Denso devices (Toyota/Lexus/etc) is 7.1.
Someone buy it and let us know the version.

Shaz,
so what version shows up on the Nav system when you use this new disc?
Navigation setup->calibration->map version
Finally, my dealership uploaded the new map disc GP9A-66-DZ0C for free (part of warranty, I guess) and has the following numbers after you toggle Navigation setup->calibration->map version:
1100
2007 Ver. 2
Haven't really played with it but I guess there's only minor changes since this is just an update. The interface has some changes and cleaning up...more refined maps and colors. I would test some more since I'm really more concerned with updated roads and streets and more POIs that hasn't shown up before.
The voice/talking lady (which I named Dora the Explorer) is still the same. Like I said, I only paid $35 for it shipped so it's not really bad.
I will update this thread as I find some more changes that I notice.

The one that is on my 2007 CX-7 is 750/2006 Ver. 1.
I ordered one of the new discs from ebay. I couldn't get the deal you had though. I paid around $100.

Shaz - your information is a direct contradiction of everything that I just found-out on my own.
(not disputing your story, just explaining what *I* just found out)
- Called my Mazda dealer and was told in no uncertain terms that THEY (the dealer) would NOT be the ones to distribute new map data--that I would need to contact NAVTEQ directly to purchase updates. The service manager was "sure" of this information. So...
- I contacted NAVTEQ directly. "No sir, we do not distribute updates for that vehicle... you need to contact Mazda directly"...
- I called Mazda USA Headquarters and got to the tech/service dept and was told "The disc that shipped with your 2008 CX-7 is the most recent disc we have for that vehicle". I said to her "Yes, I KNOW that it's the most-recent one... but the data is from 2005-2006 and I am just trying to find out WHEN we're getting an update and WHERE we get it from". She basically said that there is no knowledge of any updates in the works and that I'd be getting the disc from the dealer. I TOLD her the dealer told me that NAVTEQ would distribute it directly, she said they were wrong and that it will be through the dealers--but to HER and her MANAGER'S knowledge, the 2005/2006 disc that shipped with our CX-7 is the ONLY map disc available.
SO... I tried NAVTEQ one more time to get confirmation
- Spoke with a woman that said she knows of no agreement where Mazda has purchased updated data for use in their Nav systems. NAVTEQ only supplies RAW data. Mazda must then TAKE that data and format it into a means that the Nav system can read-utilize. Mazda is in-charge of "Creating" the update disc - NOT NAVTEQ. They just provide the raw data.
So... if NAVTEQ says they haven't supplied new data to Mazda since 2005/2006... and Mazda corporate says they do not have any newer data than the 2005/2006 disc, and they don't know of any immediate plans to create an update disc...
Then WHAT is this ebay guy selling...?
And WHAT Disc update did they do to your CX-7 Nav...?
Are you SURE it was updated map data...? or was it a system/User Interface update (which is independent of map data) that just gave some new options to the user...?
I am now THOROUGHLY confused...!!!!
-sf
I think, there is no official update disk from Mazda. But, since Mazda Navigation system uses the same map format as Toyota and Lexus, it is theoretically possible to create an update disk for our navigation using latest Toyota maps.
As far as I know, all maps are recorded in so-called Kiwi format (KWI file extension).
After digging related websites, I found the following information: the map data is actually stored in ALLDATA.KWI, INDEXDAT.KWI and IDX folder.
So, the procedure could be the following:
1) Create an ISO image from the original DVD and mount it using one of the tools available.
2) Purchase or download Toyota Nav. Update disk and copy files, mentioned above to the mounted ISO image.
3) Record this ISO on DVD-DL disk.
Also, it seems, like LOADING.KWI is responsible for that annoying "I agree" screen, so we could find a way to disable it.

Well, as I agree that it's always POSSIBLE to generate media that WILL work for updating the map data... what's still apparent is that there is no "official" update - and that is why I'm confused as to what update the dealer did for "Shaz".
Did the independent dealership make their OWN disc...? Are they using a disc that was created by a non-authorized source...? Is there REALLY a Mazda update that's available that nobody seems to be aware of...? Is Shaz just pulling our legs...? Any of these could be true. I just don't know.
Quite frankly, I am getting fed-up with the misdirection and lack of knowledge. I know, Mazda has more things to deal with than just the map updates to ONE vehicle; New designs and models, current models, older models, etc... but to the consumer... it's THEIR car that's important.
Is this critical or "recall-worthy"...? hell no. But it HAS been inconvenient the couple of times that the map data was either wrong or out-dated. I still got to where I was going... but offramps that ARE there but not on the GPS... or roads that ARE on the GPS that have since been closed (both happened to me) can become frustrating.
anyhow. I think I'm done venting for now. :)
BTW, I'm not sure update helps a lot. I also have handheld Garmin Nuvi with 2007 maps and it still doesn't know some 5+ year old roads here... However, it has more points of interest (how come our system doesn't know Millenium Park in Chicago???).
What I REALLY like in Mazda navigation - is gyro/speed-based positioning, if GPS signal is not available. I'll check it out on Lower Wacker Dr in Chicago this weekend.
I bought the disc from eBay not the dealership. the dealer just installed it for me for free. I haven't played with it yet extensively to see if they have updated maps and roads so I can't tell you. the interface changed a bit, that's all I can tell for now. but regardless, I only paid $35 so I'm not whining.

If you go to www.Onlinemazdaparts.com you can search for the part:
GP9A66DZ0C
It is MSRP of $342 from Mazda. Not sure where the guy from ebay found his discs, but they are cheaper. I just bought one.
You are correct in all your other findings. Navteq makes the map data, then Mazda uses it to create their DVD. In this case, Denso makes the GPS, so Denso actually creates the DVD for Mazda.
If you look at the versions above, it looks like new map data and some new OS stuff. Maps are dated 2007 ver 2, vs. 2006 Ver 1.
I should be getting my DVD by the end of the week, so I can report on what looks new.
As far as updating the GPS/disc update. I think Shaz just had the Dealer put the DVD in for him, because he was nervous about installing it.
Again, I'll report back when I get mine.

so - if this is all true, then it's even MORE infuriating that my DEALERSHIP, NAVTEQ and MAZDA CORPORATE were all giving information that contradicts that the disc mentioned above exists.
I plan on printing that page that shows the disc, part number & price and show it to my service/parts people tomorrow morning. This is ridiculous that nobody there has any right answers.
Actually, I went to that site. Here is what I got for this part no.

If your mazda is the same as mine.. It probably has an "A" at the end, rather then a C. If you go to calibration/map version, it probably says "750/2006 ver 1." like mine.
The C version is what Shaz got, and his version number is 1100/2007 v2. I'll update everyone on my disc when I get it later this week. I'll see if I can see any differences using my PC as well

BTW.. My mazda dealer didn't know anything about anything being new either.
the dealership and mazda corporate won't be helpful on this regard. at any rate, I'm not sweating it since I didn't pay that ridiculous $342. I wll update everyone when I cruise this weekend.

SHAZ:
I don't condone this kind of thing (wink-wink), but if you wanted to recoup on your investment, you "could" use an application on your PC to "clone" that disc... making the data ready to burn to DVD-R media. And I bet there would be lots of underhanded people (not unlike myself) that would be happy to purchase said copies for a nominal fee.
Again - I know that would be WRONG...! Just saying that SOME people would do something like that.

Ok.. So either Shaz has a different DVD or he is full of C$$p. hmm.. I doubt he was purposely misleading.. so something is funky.
I loaded up the GP9A 66 DZO C (K4238) disc on my CX-7. It is newer than my DVD but it only shows the following from the calibration/Map Version screen:
1000
2006 Ver. 2
I did notice that when I loaded the disc it updated the firmware or OS on my nav system, though. I'm guessing 1000 vs. 1100 probably isn't a big difference, but I'm still a little annoyed. I was hoping to have something with 2007 maps.
I guess 1000 vs 750 is some kind of upgrade.
BTW.. I went through all the menus and the interface didn't look any different to me.
@ Mogulman:
Dude, I'm not misleading anybody. I'm not getting any personal gains out of anybody even if I am making this up. Nor have I posted that the version I have is better or the most updated.
I was able to buy this item from a seller on eBay for way cheaper than the retail price or cheaper than what you got for that matter. I paid $35 shipped. If it was selling for $100 and up, I probably won't do it. I just got lucky to find it that cheap. OK, I still haven't played with it extensively to see if there are updated roads/map. But there are some streets and locations/POIs that are there which were not there before and this is my goal from this update. I'm not gonna whine because I didn't pay $100 like you did but I do understand the frustration.
It's in your discretion if this update would merit for you to purchase but for all doubters out there like Mogulman and CX7Scott, here are pics to prove that I am not making this up or that I am full of crap:

Yours is 464210-8243. Mine is 464210-8242.
Crap... Oh well..
BTW.. I think it is just POI, Addresses, streets that are updated.
So.. anyone else who buys a disc. Make sure it is 464210-8243.
BTW.. the 464210-82xx number is the Denso model number. The GP9A number is the Mazda model #. Figures they didn't bother to update the model number.

I loaded the disc into my PC. The volume is called 464210-8242.
There is a version.txt file. It says 2006 ver. 2.
Most of the files are from 9/2006. The Loading.KWI file and a few other files are from 4/25/2007. So it looks like my disc is from early 2007.
Shaz... Any chance you want to zip up the contents of your disc and put it somewhere? :)

Probably not, since the CX-7 is a touchscreen and the Speed6 is not. However, if a new disc comes out for the Speed3, that's more likely to work.

For anyone that is interested. I have successfully made a copy of the Navigation Disk (so yes it is possible).
I used this free program to create and image (ISO) of the disk:
http://www.imgburn.com/index.php?act=download
Then I used Nero to burn a copy onto a Dual-Layer disk. The book-type was set to "DVD-Rom".
Anyway, I have the copy in my CX-7 and it works fine.
However, I don't have the latest one with updated maps (I have 2006 maps).
I posted this information in case anyone is interested in making a copy of the "GP9A66DZ0D" version.
If I get my hands on it, I will definitely upload it somewhere so that everyone can get it. The maps on mine are so old they don't even have the street I live on. That's not a huge deal--but the wrong directions that the Navigation gives based on old maps is not so funny!

What y'all do is your own business, but you're dealing with copywrite material and there are a host of issues, red flags, raised, when making copies. Similar to what the movie and music industries gripe about.
In a public forum such as this, it's probably prudent to be a discreet.

You have to go into the back seat and there is a metal plate screwed in front of the ejected slot and button so no one can accidently bump the eject button with their foot. Remove that and it's just like the CD player. Hit eject, disc pops out. Key must be in the ACC position if I recall correctly.
