Remember about a month or soo ago I posted a thread showing off my brand new “auto exe” replica grill I just installed???? Well tonight on my way to my buddy’s super bowl party I was flying down the high way when something flew past my car. I remember thinking: that would totally suck if that was a piece of my car that just flew by me.”
Got to the party forgot all about, after watching the Giants win, I decided to call it a night and get home, ( gotta wake up at 6:00am for work…) as I approached my car I noticed my grill was gone, I automatically assumed someone stole it, then I saw that the pieces you screw in the bumper were still attached. I AM SOOOOO PISSED!!!!!!!!!!!! I just got that freaking thing and already gone
Well back to stock I guess

thats too funny, he prob bought it from “Nextmod” like me! i sent them an email giving them Sh!t for such a crappy product, and no answer. it was fiberglass, but i think the problem was that there weren’t enough layers. it was too thin, and to be honest it was not a cheap mod, it cost me like 150$ + shipping, plus paint... im still cant believe it flew off, what a waist of money!

Especially since u already have the shape. Whats hard is when u have to make something from scratch. Good luck though guys. +1 on pics. Im curious how it looks.

i'm stealing your idea and creating/marketing/selling a do it yourself carbon kit that comes with Xamount of carbon roll material, xamount of resin, etc... and you can use it to carbonize (is that a word? lol) your side mirrors, front grill, etc etc
maybe even make bulk kits for people who want to carbon their bumpers and shizzle :X
Thanks guys (thumb)
Seriously though, sorry about your grill Snooky, lol.. that sucks, I can't believe he's not refunding you or giving you a new one.
get everyone together document their problems, take pics of it on the car with the screws and pieces still attached after it breaks off
maybe if someone has one, make a video, taping it and going down the highway and filming for it to break off
then tell him you're going to go to the proper uh "forces" or something.... since that is definitely an UNSAFE product.... breaking off like that could hit the person behind them, and travelling at 60 MPH if it hits the right angle it will embed into their windsheild and probably make the driver swerve like crazy out of panic
definitely not safe.....
on the plus side........... thanks for this post snooky. This gives me an idea on just how strong the material would need to be, in order to do an "open grille" for these cars..... Gives me more ideas.

The problem with the shit they used, was 2 things man
first they told you fiber glass.... then they said "outdoor double sided tape"
LOL, I'm looking to go polyurethane. I'm actually trying to find someone local around me that can do the molds for me so I can actually keep an eye on it, instead of having to send it out of town/state and can't keep an eye on process or have to send it back and forth when it gets messed up.
I wouldn't use fiberglass for something like that, much like I won't use fiberglass for subwoofer enclosures. I use to work at a shop, and making subwoofer enclosures, well I would have "repeat" customers.... because they would have their bass up, and after 3 months to 8 months (depending on how much juice they had running to the subs) they would be cracking their fiberglass... that's why a lot of people just prefer balsa wood, especially since fiberglass gets expensive to replace when it's cracked like that. If fiberglass can't hold up to distorting vibrations of bass, I wouldn't expect a thin flimsy piece made for a front grill to hold up under 100 mph speeds. I've been to 3 shops about doing a subwoofer enclosure for me (cause I don't have time) because I want to remove the back paneling in the trunk and prop my 2 12"s up between the braces, and they each wanted to charge me for fiberglass, and I said only balsa, and they said it was too much work but I know better, it's more expensive to do fiberglass so they just wanna charge me more, and then when it cracks I'm fucked.... I'm probably gonna have to build THAT myself too.
the 2nd thing is the double sided tape.... WTF? my GF lost one of her wind/rain reflector things (that plastic thing people put around the window to deflect air and rain) with 3m double sided tape, lol
I was actually thinking that.... if the polyurethane can be made strong enough without getting too expensive, then I'd like to make a little cut out area in the middle of it, so you would have to screw the middle into the open middle area of the bumper (the little dip that has an open exposing when you take the stock grill out)
and then a little small cap that can pop in and fit over that, and looks virtually invisible until you get right up close to it. Then you might notice the little crevice that makes a circle, which would be the small cover that covers the screw.
PM me your email and I'll make some photoshops of what I'm talking about, when I get the time, and you can tell me what you think.
I also have access to one of those portable air blowers, which can mimick wind speeds of 150 (or was it 120?) mph... when turned up.
it looks like this
http://www.northerntool.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_6970_200306875_200306875
only much bigger, heh.... so I would actually be able to set that in front of the car for about 5 minutes to make sure nothing flies off or breaks, thus testing the durability of it (thumb)
The only problem is how to effective "mass market" and sell such an item without cutting losses and losing money on it (smash)

On topic...or is it now off topic...lol.
I have had two different badgeless grills on my Speed.
The first was from speedline via ebay. They are a reputable company that I had good luck with. It came unpainted in fiberglass and was shipped to my house for @$150. It was cracked in a minor fender bender. The fit was near perfect and I never had a problem.
When I replaced that, I originally ordered the one from supershy/next mod. The guy really dropped the ball on me. To make a long story short I paid him to ship next day and two weeks later i still had not gotten the grill. Got my money back without any problems.
Decided to buy the AE CF one and had it in three days from Corksport. It is a nice pc, but honestly you are really paying for jdm. This thing is worth about $250 max. But add the fact that i didn't have to pay to spray it, i actually broke even. It looks great, very subtle unless you really look. I think it adds a little class to the car.
Another CF option that has become available is from Speedline (the maker of my original). I don't believe it is clear coated, but not sure. The price is pretty reasonable, so anyone thinking of this mod should check out their website. If it had been available, I would have went with that.

Best best is to probably do the CF wrap if you access to the tools for that... I really really don't like fiberglass, and that's disappointing, that's why CF is so wonderful, it's lightweight and very durable, but can get expensive to play with (which is why places charge more for CF items).

If you notice when u put the grill on that it locks into the grooves on the side of the bumper. But it doesnt take much force to pull it out of position so using 3m double sided tape along the bottom is a must.
Also did anyone have a problem with the air diverter pushing up on the grill? I know on mine i had to use a wire tie to keep it from rubbing.

Guys..WHy not use a pop Rivet on the lower inside area of it...It will never come off that way...EVER...Unless you want it to.
Is there access to the are behind the grill to do this?
And FG is really strong if its made right.
I do a lot of FG work and I have had plenty of FG body kits in the past that hold up plenty fine to 100+MPH speeds.
And the guy about the Sub box's...Right..you must be getting some shitty work done....A well made FG box that is the right Thickness will take a beating with no problem.
The problem when buiolding box's is that no one wants to build the FG to the 1/2'' thickness that a heavy hitting sub needs.....If you only use four layers of glass....Hell yeah it'll crack.
Just my .02 cents here guys...But I would look at a some type of mechancal fastening for this item Vs. duble sided tape.

I forgot to say I like that pop rivet idea.... maybe tomorrow I'll get to looking at my car and seeing if that can be done.... thanks (thumb)
Question....... How long have you been in the car audio field? Building fiberglass boxes for subwoofers?....1/2" thickness wouldn't cut it either, no one wants to build heavy fiberglass boxes because of cost and weight. your car isn't gonna look too cool barely riding on it's springs/shocks, it's cheaper and less weight to build the box with balsa wood, and it'll stand up to the beating for a long long time..... Just ask some professional builders, and professional sound competitors for their opinions and experience? I wouldn't think they use only 4 layers of FG on their setups involving 5 or more woofers.
Just like a car with chassis flex, it doesn't hold up to that, even though it's made of steel, over time the body of the car gets warped going through the hard corners. (a good example would be an auto-x car)
I mean, no one really wants to put crappy (flea market?) subwoofers into their car, right? Everyone wants quality. Two 12" subwoofers that handle a peak of 1300 watts, and you have 2 1000 watt amps, and your setup has your subs are basically getting juiced to 1000 watts each and pumping that bass out.... you're saying the FG is gonna last for as long as you have the system? Ok................. maybe if you made it an inch or 2 thick (minimum) and dealt with the weight. Yeah it would hold up. I'll just built it with the would for only 1/4" to 1/2" thick and have it hold up just fine.
As you said fiberglass "done right".... like the fiberglass body kits, Buy a crappy one and tell me if you think it's good quality. This guy is obviously half assing shit and charging $150 for it.... I think it's because he knows many people don't want to pay, or can't justify paying, or can't afford $400 for the autoexe, and he's pretty much the only other option, isn't he? And he's saying people aren't doing so and so for his piece and that's why it's breaking.... even though they ARE following the instructions. It's cause he's making them shitty. :(
Since you work with fiberglass, help us out, take one for the team ;)..... make a grill, make it right, the right thickness, whatever you think needs to be done. Then check it out and let us know if it holds up (compared to this guy's work) ya know drive 130 mph or whatever.... if it does hold up, please tell us how much you think it would cost (while making a profit for yourself or whatever builder) to build (cost of supply and demand) and sell the grill of YOUR design...... if you can make them and they're sturdy, and worth it, I would buy one from you. Good luck (thumb) just remember the thicker you get, the bigger the piece is gonna look, you might get it to the point where it doesn't look right

Haha.. if you installed it yourself it's probably because you forgot to think about how much wind is up there.. You Tee shirt selling guys are all the same...
P.S. Pray that the piece didn't hit someone else...you could be liable.

I think that was someone else? lol I'm looking around for a cheaper polyurethane molder... I may just have to settle for the price of this one guy I found.... I can't seem to find a cheaper one that's more local, to better keep an eye on things, it's a bitch (poke)
I don't want to go with an out of state (even though I've found a few cheaper) and have to try and call and email etc if my mold hasn't come.
When a shop is local you can literally show up every day and put pressure on the douche if he's taking forever to get your mold done, ya know? ;) they don't really feel as anxious about you bothering them over the phone or email as they would in person

i also had this problem. highway speeds and the thing cracked at the screws. luckily it didn't fly off, but did do a number to my bumper. it didn't only crack at the screws, but also along the outside edge of the whole thing. i e-mailed "supershyguy" aka nextmod and he told me about the 3m tape. i told him that no instructions came with the grille, which it didn't, and that if 1/8th inch fiberglass shattered at those speeds, that tape would hold it down? BS.
I wrote another e-mail after he told me about the tape and said that i would be telling other MS6 owners about my experience. Maybe I'll get a refund or another grille out of this deal? seems like a load of crap to sell stuff that isn't tested with no instructions or anything.

Tell him you'll go on several mazda forums such as this one and mazda6 club and post threads with pictures of your car and the grill and tell them to avoid this product.
I for one will never buy that crap from nextmod.com I don't think they even tested it, they just designed it and put it on and BLAM a "product" is born
I think someone needs to report them to the better business bureau or at least to some type of road safety company like the DOT. Selling mods that can fly off someone's car and smack into the windshield of the guy driving behind you and creating an accident is NOT safe.

Dude do you still have the pics of the old broken one?
I wanna see where it cracked off... did it crack off at the middle part that goes across the middle of the grill?
Or did it break off at the portion that is supposed to go along the bumper?

So with all the discussion and the want to never actually put this grill on my car, I got it back from paint almost 2 months ago and it's been on my car for the past 1.5 months. Just because I wanted it to fly off on me lol, I went about 130mph and it's still in tact. All i did was use the two top mounting screws and double sided taped the bottom area. I saw that when i went to mount the top screws though that it almost seemed like it was cracking the piece under stress, so I used nylon washers in between the grill and car, and the grill and screw without any problem.
