Hi all,
My g/f has a protege '00 LX 1.6 and now her CEL comes on once a while. I took it to Autozone and got the reading saying it's P0106, something related to a leak during the intake? The guy told me to use a carbon cleaner to spray around the intake and if the engine suddenly revs up then there is a leak there. I tried that way but nothing happened. Well, can someone gives me some suggestion on this? or tell me why does spraying a carbon cleaner can find the problem?

Thanks,

Josh

JoshIf the intake manifold gasket is leaking, then unmetered air is getting into the combustion chambers at idle. This is a vacuum leak and causes the engine to run lean and the idle to drop a bit. The oxygen sensor picks that up and sets the P0106 check engine light code. By spraying carb cleaner [or any other flammable liquid] onto the mating flange area [where the intake bolts to the head] an intake air leak can be found, because it will draw in the carb cleaner and the engine will be momentarily richened up and smooth itself out.

But I don't think that will be your problem for the P0106 code. Take a look HERE (http://mazdaforum.com/m_70054/tm.htm). It's more than likely a clogged vacuum port to your EGR Boost sensor. Cheap fix!

Is that what fixed your g/f's car? How about an update?

Ha sorry I totally forgot I posted here as well. So I did fix my g/f's car. (now ex-gf) And the problem was just a loose PCV valve...
The engine bay was really dirty and I think worn engine mounts created much vib and over time it shakes the PCV valve out of its place. It was only about 5 mm out of the gasket but it did allow extra air to come into the manifold.
Anyway it has been all good after I pushed it back it there.

Oh and I did spray the thing around the manifold but of course nothing happened because the PCV valve was not near the manifold. I pretty much learned all possible vacuum line and looked at them for so many days until I saw the loose PCV valve.

Thanks for the follow up! That's good info for all of us searching for vacuum leaks.
