Quick and stupid question-
How the hell am I supposed to remove the steering rack from the car(2.0L, Mtx)? I've got everything disconnected, but I can't find a way to pull the damn thing out. I believe the manual says to pull it from the right side. I've tried pulling it from the driver's side and passenger side and have tried to drop it straight down, but there's always something in the way.
Thanks

I think you have to pull the drive axle jack shaft that is bolted to the engine block. Did you do that?

No - I haven't done anything outside of what was specified in the "steering rack removal" section of the repair manual. I'm really just bumbling my way around right now, so I want to be sure that I'm at least going in the right direction before I started removing other things

Went back to try to get it out again the other day, but still can't get it. I didn't remove the transverse member or the engine mount member as specified in steps 5 and 6 in section 6-12-9 of the manual. I didn't do it because
A) I don't have the tool to support the engine when the mount is removed
2) I don't see how that would even help because the rack does not seem to even come close to touching either
Could either of these be the problem or is the only way to get this damn thing out and the new one in is to pull the whole engine?

You mean you don't have a floor jack and a chunk of wood to support the engine?
Why don't you just give up now if you don't plan on using your brain?

I'll try that whole using your brain thing...very helpful advice
BTW: my floor jack is busted. It no longer stays up, but I can always find a way to support the engine. I was just wondering if that would help at all. I don't really have any more time to waste
