View Full Version : What is the lowest temperature recorded on your Mazda5?

Hey,
Since we're in the middle of Winter, I thought it would be fun to show the lowest outdoor temperature you've registered from the Mazda5.
I live is Calgary and it's darn cold today. I recorded this temperature a few minutes ago.....Mind you, this is the daytime high. I registered at -32C this morning before the sun popped out.
N.B. This is the temperature in Celcius, I'm not sure what the Farenheit equivalent would be.
Sorry for the poor pic...I took this from my phone....and my whole body was shaking from the cold at the time.....:-)

-28*C = -18*F Damn, that's cold. Now, while you may hold the current record for coldest temp displayed, when's the last time you were able to register a 1xx*F temp :p

There's one time that Weather Canada declared an Extreme Cold Warning in Toronto and the temperature is -18C with windchill at -25C. We don't get any Extreme Cold Warning here in Winnipeg until the temperature drops to -30C below with windchill below -40C!! (shocked)

-7F the other day here in MO. I was outside loading my truck in that. It was pretty cold when you have to compare to today it was 60+ degrees. (which was WONDERFUL) It gets to 110F here sometimes during summer. We have a pretty big swing in temperatures here. Your body has to do a lot of adjusting and your clothes do too.

I just looked at our forcast for tomorrow.....

53F down to 9F in one day.

For you metric people.
12C down to -13C in one day.

-24F here last winter (hasn't been that cold this year; only -20 F so far). Highest it's read for us is 108 F. The 108 is a slight cheater, though, as that was in Phoenix (not a very hot day based on when I lived there). It showed us 102 at home last summer, but I suspect it was really more like 98 and just got hot in the sun. :)

It's -33 celcius (-27.4 F) here in Regina, Saskatchewan. Counting windchill, they say it's about -50 celcius. I have to watch the MZ5 dealer-installed remote starter. The thing does not have a 'retry' function. It will try only once, and if the car fails to start that's it. My way around it is to remote start, then stop, then remote start again.

The lowest I've registered in the 5 in Kelowna is -20 C (-4 F) and the highest is 41 C (105.8 F) but I suspect that was exaggerated over the "real" ambient temperature.

The coldest I've EVER experienced was when I lived in Edmonton in 1966. The school I went to closed as the furnace oil wouldn't flow. It was the only time I ever heard of an Albertan school closing and the temperature was -45 F (remember this was the 60s, no metrics in Canada then!) or a bone chilling -42.78 C, which is damn cold no matter the measuring method! The wind chill dropped it at least another -10 F. Of course, we all went skating at the ice rink the school system built on the football field.

Cold is relative to humidity, which is why Vancouverites freeze at -4 C and Toronto issues warnings at -18C. Kelowna is pretty arid, and the cold doesn't penetrate as much as it does in the more humid climes. People in the prairie Provinces (and States!) merely button up their shirts at those temps!

I took the attached pic in my Vibe on I-94 in North Dakota last January. I've seen it at -28F but didn't have a camera that time.

There has to be a way to harness energy out of this temperature difference between indoor and outdoor.

hello,

this is a bit off topic, but since y'all are talking about the Mazda5 and cold weather, do any of you have the suspension crunch that some owners have complained about. supposedly it happens mainly in colder weather with the 5s.

i'm in Canada and am contemplating buying a 2008 Mazda5. gonna test drive it tomorrow in -20 weather to see for myself.

i'll post my test drive results, but would like to hear if any current owners have the problem.

I suspect all owners have had this problem. I had my bushings replaced a couple months ago (for the 2nd time) and in -30C weather I have not had any problems. I'm hopeful that the new 2008 models don't have this problem.

I have heard it a few times on COLD mornings. I'm not going to do anything about it unless it starts doing it during warmer weather. Seems excessive to try to fix something that only happens 1% of the time for me.

I have the MZ5 2006.. the crunch comes up beginning of the cold season. This past weeks we have a deep freeze at -27 to -30 celcius. The crunching sound is nowhere to be heard. So I think the crunch happens only at certain range of temperature.

I saw a -14F here this past week (St. Paul) - Windchill was something ridiculous - I won't even go there. The digital display was pretty lethargic and the manual shifter was like moving tar. Do any versions come with plug-in engine block heaters?

(Somewhat) on topic: Does every 5 have the temp display there, and mine is just turned off? All that the display in my 5 shows is the radio settings...
(somewhat) off topic: My 5 "crunches" whenever it's below freezing. AS soon as I have time, it's going in to see what the dealer will do for that.
Oh yeah, last Tuesday it was -18F. The 5 fired right up and drove fine. It's nice not having a 15+ year old car anymore.

Only the auto climate controls have it AFAIK. I do think the sensor may be mounted up front of the radiator though. I haven't dug through the service manual to see what those sensors are though. One is likely to be the airbag sensor.

You stock up on the beer before the storm, it helps with the snow removal.

I couldn't even think what that would be like.

^^ I'm not originally from cold areas so it freaked me out when my Canadian buddy invited me to his place in Ontario during Winter and asked me to go and get a beer. I jumped to the fridge but there was nothing there. He laughed and pointed me to the backyard patio .

Yup, tons of beer piled up there quite lonely and ready to be opened. One of the best cold Molson Dry's I've ever tried :D

hey it's not so bad once you are used to it. There's 30 inches of ice on Clearwater Lake.... the trout are biting..The mighty Saskatchewan River has 24- 30 inches of ice and the pickerel are biting. Light a fire, sit in the ice shack and fish. Nice way to spend a day.

My cat literally went out the door and back in in a micro second.
The engine starts great but it does that slow "chug-chug" sound before it starts.
Checking the road report on CityPulse24, nothing but accidents on the roads, even the salts are not working.
Got -16 on my AMB but that's after being out in the sun and out of the wind.

Yup, it's been pretty cold here, 1F this morning. The real cold like this usually doesn't last more than a few days here. I might see a lower temp as the winter continues.

The last couple of winters have been milder than this one. I actually remember waxing the Honda and Acura in January last year.

On the other hand, our fall has beautiful leaves and summers are great (70-80F). I rarely need to run the A/C.

We were ice fishing last weekend and it was cold. My display showed -32 in my Mazda, but my buddies Exporer showed -37(headshake. Either way the next day it got upto -20 so starting it after sitting out on the ice all night was tough. I'm sure the oil didn't start flowing for a few seconds and the poor thing made some awful banging and crashing noises as it stuggled to keep running. The clutch wouldn't engage for about 5 minutes and it is the only time I've seen frost on a head liner.. Thats cold.... At least it made it through all the snow on the lake... Had to drive through 3' drifts on Sunday to get off the ice. So you know the 5's pretty good in the snow. If you look at the GPS unit you can see my 5's on the lake (that's the blue area)(rockon)

What is the lowest temp anyone has seen on the external temp guage in their Mazda5? I've seen -32C, but I know that it was actually -38C out. I had been driving for about 50km with the guage saying -32C all the time when stopped at a friends farm. His temp guage outside said -38C and his Toyota Tundra said -37C

So, what's the lowest anyone has seen? It appears that my guage quits at-32C, does yours quit at -32C also? (When it's that cold, I guess who cares what the actual temp is) Also, what's the highest temp measured?

Just wondering.

I haven't been on the forum for a while. This is pretty much the coldest I've seen this winter in Ottawa on January 15th.

The photo is a little blurry because I was a little too cold to keep the camera steady.

Awww man, I don't have the thermometer. I so think the worst seen was about -10 or -15F (thank you insulated garage!! It was about 20F after a week of -10 or worse).

I did manage, however to drive the 5 with snows in about 18-20 inched of snow last winter! Well less driving and more like the old paddle wheel riverboats... (skimming along the surface of the snow).

Lesson Learned: more snow the ground clearance = snow/ice buildup in independent suspension and around drive shafts. I have never before had to melt ice from axles to prevent damage!
