Lookin at pickin up a 2000 Protoge and I noticed when I had the drives door open and I'd shift it into different gears you could hear a "hiss" of some sort when shifting gears... is this normal?

i would highly recommend not driving with your doors open first of all. youll have a lot bigger problems than the transmission hissing.
sorry couldnt help it. sounds odd to me. i sure someone who knows what the hell there talking about will chime in.
and welcome to the boards.

Is it a hissing sound? or a high pitch whine? You could get a high pitched whining sound if a motor mount is loose , or missing in my case (long story).

I drive a Sport20 with the tiptronic tranny and I get the hissing sound as well. Especially if I shift from drive to reverse or vice versa. Sometimes I can hear it when I come to a stop and the tranny is shifting back to 1st gear. I changed the transmission fluid assuming it was breaking down to no effect. Took it to a tranny specialist and he has no idea what it could be. He just told me once it is shifting ok then don't worry about it. I just wonder if it is normal and since I noticed it then my mind just subconciously notice it all the time now. (dance)

is it a manual trans? if the engine is running the "hiss" you are hearing, is it low and sound like soft metals dragging against each other? if so its prolly the synchros engaging. is shifting notchy? or hard to get into gear. when was the last time the trans oil was changed. if its been around 30k miles id recommend changing it. on an auto it could be the shift solenoids opening and closing and engaging the clutch packs.
