Today I decided to take off the back deck to check out the speakers when I saw that the slots were empty.( idk if the MSP comes without those speakers or the original owner took them because the original owner also took the stock sub)

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a229/djlunatik/Picture001-1.jpg

Luckily I have 2 6x9 Kicker speakers that fit perfectly and I tried to connect them but got confused after I ran into a little problem.

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a229/djlunatik/Picture006.jpg

The Kickers require this type of connection...

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a229/djlunatik/Picture004-1.jpg

and I found this wire where the original speakers were supposed to be...

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a229/djlunatik/Picture010-1.jpg

how do I get this to work?

There were never any speakers in there from the factory. I'm not sure about wiring any other in there though.

I'm planning to put some speakers there too. Unsure about how to connect those though.

yeah same here and im pretty sure that loose wire in the 4th pic has something to do with it? C'mon any audio guys?

easy, if those are the speaker wires, I don't know off the top of my head what color wires they used but I do believe brown is one then you just chop that white female connector off the stock wiring and put two female spade receivers on the wires. connect to kickers and enjoy. try lookign in the protege service manual for the stereo wiring.

i did it. i cut the female connector and attached the two wires to the speaker and it works. sounds AWESOME. Thanks Velocifero

lol replace the rear door speakers with better ones... and put that same 12" sub in. that'll sound a lot better than adding 6x9s (which are the worst sounding speakers you can get) to the rear deck (which is the worst place to put speakers in a car)

I was talking about adding the 6x9's and sub by removing the stock rear sub enclosure.

It does make a huge difference well, for me it was perfect but, I'm not into audio setup's that much.

Another option is to use a splice instead of cutting off the connector. Like this:

sorry brother, those are the worst type of electrical connection ever. Very poor connection. I am sure you want to tell me how well you've had it with them, and I don't mean any disrespect to you, but no electrician uses them. T-taps are light years ahead of those and even those aren't all that great.

Well so far I love it and I just had these laying around I'm not planning on spending money on new speakers I'm happy how they all sound now... I think the 6x9s just made it better

No dont wanna tell you shit about them. I've never used them. People have and sounded just fine. I know how to do good electrical work. I solder and use heatshrink tubing on all my connections. But thanks for the input (2thumbs)

yeah man solder is the way to go, that is the way I do things now a days. I used to use butt connectors and splicers like those but they are never as solid as soldering and always cause a problem eventually. When I briefly got to work on some control panel building it really helped open my eyes to electrical work.

i didnt know where to post this but does anyone know how to fix all the rattling noise from the plastic cover on the back deck? It's getting pretty annoying now with my exhaust and speakers rattling. I put some towels under the deck and it helped a bit but its still noisy. I also saw Daedulus' thread once where he put weather stripping but just curious to know if anyone else has done something to get rid of the annoying plastic rattling.

just get a pair of $600+ front door speakers like boston pro60's and you're set....you cant even hear the back if you have quality speakers, rear doors are for rear passengers. enough said. that or run the factory speakers off an amp. like a 300X4 memphis...it does wonders!

Lunatik

the speakers are fine i just realized that its the metal mostly when you take off the plastic cover. even just hitting it with ur fist makes a realllly annoying rattling noise so with the exhaust and sub vibrations its bad... im just gonna buy weather stripping and maybe something else to get everything nice and tight

how i got rid of it was i put wire loom over the whole back line closest to the window and some cardboard under the front part and a few other places... also the middle seat belt retractor makes the most sound...shove a lot of cardboard behind it to hold it still

I disagree. I put 6x9's in the upper deck of my msp and it sounds really good.

Does anyone know if the 6x8's have the same bolt pattern as a standard 6 1/2 inch? I tried comparing them by measuring with a pencil at best buy and they seemed to be the same if not very close.

sorry to bump an old thread but i wanted to know if there's enough room to put 6x9's in the rear deck without it getting in the way of the stock sub enclosure?

Yeah well, to someone who's never had a Peter Luger steak, I suppose a steak from Outback tastes pretty good.

Seriously... ask any expert and they'll tell you the same thing I did. I didn't just pull that out of my ass. But I suppose speakers (even poorly positioned ones) are better than nothing.

You're mostly right but... But based on what I've been told by 'experts' (I'm not one nor do I pretend to be) they're useful for creating a more 'balanced' (I forgot the technical term they used) overall sound.

But I agree with your sentiment on now blowing alot of money on those speakers. I have some pretty high-end kickers throughout and, in hindsight, wish I just kept the stockers in the rear and saved the $200 I spent on them. Can barely hear them (when the fronts are firing) so really... rear speaker upgrade FTL

just get a good component speaker set(4 speakers w/ jump boxes), run those off of an amp with a nice head unit and it'll sound great. I've wired tons of cars with components and it sounds really awesome if you do it right. It's really simple.

kind of a threadjack but not... is there supposed to be a a cover for the underside of that deck?seems kinda sketch to just have that part exposed like that.

but im in the same boat with the 6x9's since the previous owner took the sub and i presume the amp.

I just slapped some 6x9 kens in there but ill probably replace all the speakers when i do up my acer headunit ;)

Valk

that is hella ghetto lol. kinda like no sunroof on the top of the line protege... sigh.

ah well. ill make one then. gonna make pocket sub boxes for the trunk too.i used thelong pointed screws that came with the kenwoods so i could slash myself pretty good under there if im not careful.
the 6x9's added bass that was otherwise gone with just the door speakers but meh. ill put our cnc to work and make new baffles. i just know next to nothing about car audio. its not enough for me to read who buys what and go on that, i have to know why...

Ricktalife
12-20-2008, 11:57 PM
well there are places that can make you a sunroof. but i wouldn't advise that lol.

i miss it in the p5, but im appreciating the zoom zoom. hey, where is the factory sub? when i get the car back i wanna see if its still there.

Velocifero
12-22-2008, 02:08 PM
OPen your trunk and check the underside of the deck. there is a kenwood enclosure there with the 8" sub and amp.

Valk
12-22-2008, 09:05 PM
yea. that isnt there. its completly exposed metal under the deck. there are two brackets on either side of the trunk that i assume were used to afix the stock sub.

sooo. the wires that i used to wire up my deck speakers, were those the feeds for the sub box?

Velocifero
12-23-2008, 04:20 PM
Na, the car is all pre-wired. You used the wires for the rear speakers most likely. Were they right next to the speaker holes? The only wires that came in for the sub was on the drivers side and they went into the amp.

Valk
12-23-2008, 09:17 PM
yea. they were just cheapy speaker wires. would it be worth it to rip all the stock wiring out when i upgrade and redo the whole shebang? there is another bunch of wires under there, so i guess the previous owner just snipped and hacked the $50 sub lol.

Velocifero
12-23-2008, 09:22 PM
it's worth it if you are into teh sound system. I replaced the Kenwood 8" with a JL W0 and it was good enough for me. But, I am more into the go factor, that and conservative talk radio sounds crappy with too much bass.
