First spy shot of the new Lotus super-coupe snapped. Will it draw in new buyers with its mid-engined four-seat layout?

http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/images/front_picture_library_UK/dir_481/car_photo_240618_7.jpg

The Eagle has landed! It’s a grainy spy shot, but this is the photo that gives Lotus fans their first glimpse of the firm’s next new model.

Codenamed the Eagle, the newcomer is tipped to appear on the firm’s British Motor Show stand this summer. Based on Lotus's versatile platform structure, the high performance model will offer a similar package to the Europa grand tourer with the extra versatility of a four-seat cabin.

Expect more official information to be revealed ahead of the car’s debut in July.

4 seats, like the way a Porsche 911 has 4 seats? Not sure if, or why there would be a demand for this.

This image will probably be stuck in Lotus fans’ memories, since it has already appeared so many times and Lotus engineers do not seem to have a great deal of imagination in order to camouflage the new Eagle. All the times it has been spotted it was using exactly the same covers. The big news about this scoop is that it was in Nürburgring, what confirms the idea that this Lotus, as most of the others, will offer superb handling and its presentation date, in July, at the British Motor Show, is getting closer.

While Opel has unveiled the first official pictures of the new Insignia well before its presentation, also at the British Motor Show, it is very likely Lotus will save the best for last. Although the final appearance of the car may take a while to be known, we are already well informed about the mechanics: just like the Elise, the Eagle will have a Toyota poweplant, but bigger. The mid-mounted engine to power the new car will be a 3.5-litre V6, elected one of the 10 best engines of the world by Ward's AutoWorld magazine, and possibly stronger than the 306 bhp stock version. Anyway, what we are really willing to show you is if Lotus has managed to combine its engineering expertise to a great looking car. Stay tuned!

4 seats, like the way a Porsche 911 has 4 seats? Not sure if, or why there would be a demand for this.

Like Jeremy Clarkson said in his 997 Porsche 911 Turbo review, "...the rear seats are for you very skinny children, cause if you have a Porsche (or in this case a Lotus) you have a very skinny wife"

Yah, I never got the point of rear seats in performance driven cars like these, sometimes I think it's just to classify them as Grand Touring.

Anyway, I'd love to see how it looks. I love Elises/Exiges whenever I see them. This won't disappoint.

Aka 2+2. Now my car on the other hand. Mazda did it right. I too don't see the demand for Lotus though.

Eagerly anticipated and making its official global debut at the British Motorshow in London on July 22nd, the first all-new car from Lotus since the iconic Elise in 1995, will enter the sportscar market as the only mid-engined 2+2 in production.

The new car, which is known only by its project name ‘Eagle’, is a more holistic offering than the Elise and Exige models that have been so massively popular with track day enthusiasts. The car, the name for which will be announced at the British Motorshow on 22nd July at an 11:30 press conference, is designed for people who desire exotic sportscar characteristics of stunning design, exclusivity, dramatic proportions and performance. Project Eagle also offers real-world usability and a unique sense of occasion.

Powered by a 3.5-litre V6 producing 280 PS, the new car employs innovative lightweight chassis technology to ensure visceral all-round dynamic performance, in keeping with the great Lotus tradition. Even in the very early stages of development testing, Lotus ride and handling engineers report that it is considerably faster around the famously demanding Nürburgring circuit than the Elise and more stable at speed than the Exige.

Inside, Project Eagle cocoons occupants with a sumptuous leather surfaces juxtaposed with contemporary high-tech features. With driver focused instrumentation the driver sits in cockpit-esque surroundings. A beautifully appointed dash boasts tactile details such as flush-mounted controls that glow with blue LED haloes and a stylised speedometer and rev counter ensuring that controls are both attractive and accessible.

Styled in-house by Lotus Design, the Project Eagle’s sleek, sophisticated and attention-snaring lines brilliantly disguise its ability to accommodate passengers in the rear of the cabin, giving the car the external characteristics of a small, nimble sportscar whilst belying its internal space. As well as being sold in a 2+2 configuration, the car will also be available as a purely two-seater, the space in the rear being allocated to luggage storage. Other derivatives are also planned for the future, including a convertible and an ultra*high performance version.

Deliveries of Project Eagle will begin in Spring 2009, and with only 2000 of the hand crafted cars planned each year, this exclusive and unique car is creating a real stir with celebrity enthusiasts around the world. Hollywood actor and car enthusiast Patrick Dempsey is just one of the high profile collectors who are on the waiting list for a test drive.

Mike Kimberley, CEO of Group Lotus plc, had this to say about the new model: “Project Eagle is the biggest milestone Lotus has achieved since the Elise was born 13 years ago. We are currently working at broadening the appeal of the Lotus brand through an aggressive 5-year model plan of which this car represents the first exciting step.”

Project Eagle in detail:

Project Eagle is the first of three new models included in the CEO’s (Mike Kimberley) five year strategic business plan initiated in October 2006 to support Lotus’ growth.

Design

Designed in-house by Lotus Design, Head of Design, Russell Carr, explains “Project Eagle’s dynamically sculptured form and dramatic proportions communicate visual drama, speed and agility even when the car is standing still. Sportscars are primarily an emotional rather than a rational purchase and so the design must seduce with its beauty and distinctive character. However, the modern customer also demands that the product offers real-world usability as well as exotic imagery. Therefore every element of the car’s exterior and interior has been carefully designed to create a product that offers comfort and convenience as well as traditional performance car attributes.”

A design language of dynamic lines and fluid surfaces that flow from the ‘Lotus –mouth’ and over the length the cars toned form are unmistakably ‘modern Lotus’. They instantly convey a sense of agility and athleticism that is intrinsic to the car’s driving persona. On Project Eagle they are complemented by the distinctive wraparound visor screen but have been subtly tailored to suit the more sophisticated character of the car, optimise high-speed aerodynamics and artfully disguise the unique 2+2 layout. The cab forward proportion combines with muscular haunches and optimised intake detailing to instantly inform the viewer that this is a serious mid-engine sportscar. Elsewhere a Lotus philosophy for combining function with beauty is evident in the downforce generating, top exit radiator vent, rear diffuser and rear wing.
Inside the car the forms echo the exterior with fast moving surfaces that wrap around the cockpit cosseting the occupants, the contrast colour band that flows from the instrument cluster and sweeps around the cabin highlights this theme. “We recognise that ‘touch’ not only assists with driving enjoyment but also conveys messages about quality and therefore great attention has been paid to all the areas where the driver interfaces with the car.” Carr explains. Figure hugging adjustable sports seats and flat-bottomed steering wheel instantly communicate the driving potential of the car. Project Eagle employs premium quality material and finishes to create an exclusive, British handcrafted ambience that is unique in this price segment. Modern, precision-engineered aluminium inserts and hi-fi quality, edge-lit switches are brilliantly juxtaposed against the traditional contrast stitched leather panels.

Everyday convenience is catered for through ergonomically located touch screen SAT NAV, remote release glove box, storage bins and integrated “cup holders”.

Technology

In a world launch by partners Alpine, Project Eagle boasts a truly cutting edge in-car entertainment and navigation system. The multi-media system features a 7in touch-screen providing advanced audio, satellite navigation, Bluetooth hands-free telephone and iPod® connectivity functions; the screen also serves as a monitor for Project Eagle’s optional reversing camera. The satellite navigation element of the system has a removable hard-drive, allowing you to programme it from the comfort of your home or use it as a roaming satellite navigation unit and MP3 player.

The Alpine audio set-up is one of the most sophisticated automotive systems in the world. Called IMPRINT and using MultEQ sound enhancement technology, it is able to cancel out imbalances in the sound caused by different areas of the cabin – window glass, for instance, creates echoes, while carpets suppress mid-range frequencies – resulting in amazingly crisp, clear, undistorted sound reproduction wherever you are seated in the car.

A bespoke progressive air-conditioning system developed by Bergstrom is standard on all models, while on-board tyre pressure monitoring will be either standard or optional depending on model and market. And in deference to the American market in particular, a module in the headlining will accommodate automatic garage and gate opening remote controls.

Interior space and accommodation

The rear seats of 2+2 versions of Project Eagle are intended for children or smaller adults on short journeys. To maximise comfort in the rear, there is foot-room under the seats in front, while both back seats feature ISOFIX mountings for secure child seat fitment.
When unoccupied, the rear seats provide a convenient stowage area for briefcases and jackets, adding to Project Eagle’s appeal as an everyday car. The boot, which ingeniously features a fresh air cooling system to reduce the effect of heat ingress from the engine bay, will accommodate a set of golf clubs.

A two-seater derivative of Project Eagle is planned and will have a luggage shelf in the back replacing the two rear seats.

Safety

Lotus’ Project Eagle conforms to all regulatory standards and in addition boasts additional safety features; Lotus aluminium chassis technology applied to Project Eagle’s provides the car with immense inherent strength, particularly in regard to side impacts and a tubular steel seatbelt anchorage frame that also acts as a rollover structure.

Anti-lock brakes are standard on all models, as are traction and stability controls; these systems have been specially developed in co-operation with Bosch to provide enhanced safety features whilst maintaining performance characteristics.

Under the bonnet

Lotus continues its excellent working relationship with Toyota, world leaders in engine development and manufacture and Formular1 competitors. For Project Eagle Lotus has modified Toyota’s 3.5-litre V6, with dual VVT-i (‘intelligent’ variable valve timing) for optimum performance.

Performance

At the time of unveiling, full performance figures for the new Lotus will not have been compiled on a production specification car, however Lotus has a further 6 months of development time to conduct these before Project Eagle is available to test drive.
While for Lotus top speed is of less importance than stability at speed, early indications suggest a maximum speed of 160 mph; the 0-60 mph sprint from standstill is estimated at sub 5 seconds (prototype figures).

A bit more concise description of the above:

CAR has supposedly scored the first (and only) picture of the Lotus Eagle ahead of its unveiling at the London Motor Show next week. A 3.5-liter Toyota V6 mounted amidships, producing 276 hp and 250 lb.-ft. of torque will power the new 2+2. Performance estimates are sketchy right now, but assuming Lotus holds with tradition and keeps the pounds off, the 0-60 time should be below five seconds, with a top speed approaching 160 mph.

While it's still not clear if the new Lotus will carry an Eagle badge at its debut, it will be packing an extra set of "Isofix" seats behind the front seat passengers that can accommodate children up to nine years old or cast members from the Cirque du Soleil. Thankfully, there will be an option to convert the rear seats into a storage compartment.

Inside the leather-lined cabin, drivers get to enjoy amenities previously thought frivolous on the Elise/Exige, including storage bins, cup holders, blue LED lighting, air conditioning, traction control, tire pressure monitoring and a Alpine stereo with a seven-inch screen, Bluetooth connectivity and iPod connections.

Sales will be limited to around 2000 units per year when the Eagle hits dealers in the spring of 2009, with an approximate sticker of £45,000. A convertible version and a high-performance variant are also planned, and according to sources, the Eagle is considerably faster than the Elise around the Nurburgring and more planted at speed than the Exige.

Mike Kimberly, Lotus' CEO, told CAR that the Eagle is part of the automaker's effort to broaden its appeal, and that will also include two new models due out in October of 2011.

They should have gone with a VQ35, the ECO-Tech 2.0 Turbo, or the 2.3 DESI from mazda. Toyota engine FTL. I imagine this will be a 911 fighter (base) but the 997 is putting well over 300hp at this point. I understand the car is light weight by today's standards but still. beautiful car though.

Visitors to the London Show have already had a chance to see the new Evora up close, but Lotus’s new mid-engined sportscar is still undergoing a gruelling test programme ahead of its launch next May.

Our spy photographers have snapped this prototype being tested hard at the Nurburgring. With no need for disguise, it also gives us a chance to see what the Evora looks like in a colour other than the white it used on the show stand, with this example looking pretty good in blue.

he Evora uses a 3.5-litre Toyota V6 engine producing 280bhp and should be capable of a top speed of over 170mph. Engineers who have driven the car claim that it is more than a dynamic match for its major price-point rival, the Porsche Cayman. The car has been tested extensively at the Nurburgring, with Lotus conducting its biggest ever pre-launch drive programme to ensure the car can deliver on the claims.

Lotus has also confirmed that a convertible version of the Evora will follow the coupe, and we also know that the car’s ‘versatile vehicle architecture’ will underpin the forthcoming V8-engined Esprit replacement, which will go on sale in 2011.

supercharged version of the new Lotus Evora 2+2 is planned – and the blown version will have at least 350bhp.

The normally aspirated 276bhp version of the Lotus Evora is on target for launch in May 2009 and, although official performance figures on that car have yet to be revealed, company sources have confirmed that it will be capable of cracking 60mph in around 5.5sec and hitting 160mph.
The supercharged Lotus Evora should cut the former figure to comfortably below 5.0sec and boost the top speed to around 175mph.

However, the ‘Evora SC’ is still a relatively distant priority for Lotus; it’s likely to arrive around 2011. Before then, attention at Hethel will be concentrated on finishing the ‘federal’ version of the standard Lotus Evora, due on sale in the US in the autumn of 2009, and on other versions of the model.

A torque-converter auto version of the Lotus Evora is also in the product plan and would have strong appeal in the US, but Autocar understands that it will not be ready in time for the US launch.

“Right now, it’s looking unlikely that we’ll have the auto version next year,” a spokesman said. “There’s quite a lot of development work still to be done on it.”

After the automatic will come the Evora roadster, due late in 2010. “The open-top car will be a more difficult one for us than you might expect,” our source said. “At the £50,000 price point customers expect an integrated electric roof mechanism [unlike the manual hood on the Elise], and that presents packaging challenges for us.”

With those cars delivered and at least 24 months of clear air given to the standard Evora, Lotus will time the supercharged variant to arrive in mid-2011. “We’ve already had a blown version of the V6 engine running on a bench,” said our contact. “It delivered 350bhp and 290lb ft of torque [up from 252lb ft in the standard car] without any modifications at all.”
The braking (and most of the cooling) performance that the faster Evora will require has already been engineered into the standard car, which should shorten the faster model’s development time.

Also in preparation for the blown car, the Evora’s engine bay as been designed to accommodate its supercharger between the cylinder banks, so as not to obstruct rear-view mirror visibility (which is compromised in the Elise SC).

Prices have yet to be confirmed for the standard Lotus Evora; early indications suggest that it will start from around £45,000, but currency fluctuations have made a final commitment to that price difficult.
Expect the Evora SC to eventually come in somewhere between £55,000 and £60,000, depending on specification.

Lotus' mid-engined 2+2 sports car is opening up for 2011.

http://photos.autoexpress.co.uk/images/front_picture_library_UK/dir_607/car_photo_303614_7.jpg

The Evora is looking to put the wind up its rivals! Lotus has confirmed that the fixed roof version – already in production and scheduled to go on sale on May 2 – will be joined by a convertible in 2011.

Similar to its less-luxurious mid-engined sibling the Elise, the Evora convertible is likely to feature a removable fabric panel that can be left at home when the weather allows. This does away with the need for expensive and a heavy electric folding mechanism, meaning it should be every bit as sharp to drive as the hard-top. The extruded and bonded Aluminium chassis will be stiffened too, to compensate for the absence of a roof and keep body flex to a minimum.

Behind the occupant’s heads is the same Toyota-derived 3.5-litre V6, tuned to produce 276bhp. Performance will be scintillating with the 0-62mph sprint dispatched in around five seconds and a top speed of 160mph.

But if that’s not enough to get your pulse racing don’t worry – rumours suggest that as well as the convertible variant, a more powerful supercharged version is under development too. And with close to 400bhp it should be able to keep pace with exotic offerings from Ferrari and Porsche.
Lotus has also fleshed out some of the pricing the imminent hard-top version. Prices will start from £47,500 which will buy you a 2+0 car without any rear seats fitted, and the two extra chairs and the price jumps to £49,875. To celebrate the car's launch, the first 200 cars in the UK will cost £58,460 but come with every conceivable extra.

The wraps first came off the Lotus Evora 2+2 GT (http://www.motorauthority.com/spy-shots-lotus-eagle-caught-ring-testing.html) back in July 2008 but despite the car looking production-ready Lotus engineers had plenty of fine tuning to complete before the car could finally go on sale. Then, almost nine months later, Lotus finally confirmed the production specifications for the Evora and announced a launch date for this May. That date got bumped to June, but the car is finally on its way - for Europe at least.

To ramp up excitement for the launch, Lotus has released a new set of images of the Evora, revealing the interior and several new exterior shots. The Evora will go on sale in Europe this June as a 2010 model with a starting price of €50,412 for the basic two-seater model. Opt for the 2+2 seating configuration and buyers will have to pay an additional €3,000.

No word on a U.S. launch has been announced yet but already some big name celebrities, both here and abroad, have announced interest in it. On the list (http://www.motorauthority.com/lotus-evora-attracts-celebrity-pre-orders.html) are Jay Leno, Daniel Craig, Pierce Brosnan, London Mayor Boris Johnson, musician Jay Kay, Richard Hammond and James May, Beyoncé, Dave Grohl, George Clooney, Kevin Spacey and Patrick Dempsey - to name just a few.

To kick off the sales launch, Lotus will be releasing a special version built in a limited run of just 450 cars.
