View Full Version : Clocking Turbo
Turbo MP3

This winter among many little things I'm doing to my car, I'm getting the turbo rebuilt... Even with the wastegate sticking shut its boosting low (for the wastegate being junk) and it's losing oil even thought there is little shaft play... Anyway has anybody clocked their turbo, I hate the stupid 180 bend my hardpipes make, and they rub the rad. fans... I know on my Mp3 the turbo was clocked differently, but does out exhaust manifold not allow us to clock, o is it fine? Thanks in advance!(monkey2)

i clocked my T3/T4 when i did my build so it is pointed down to make the i/c piping as short as possible.. worked well. i think the stock mani should allow it..

I had to reclock mine after it was modded with bigger wheels.
Once I had the assembly together I had to place it on the exhaust studs and then see how I need to turn it.
It took about three tries for us to get it at the correct angle.
You need some snap ring pliers that go into the little holes and then you squeeze the pliers and turn the turbo.

How do you like your turbo? I'm thinking about getting it done but, at $655 +shipping+a new WGA I think a GT28 might be a better idea

Well I have two of them now (I killed one) and I love mine. I have had it for close to two years. Back when I got it done it included a lot of stuff: ported manifold/ceramic coated, ported S-PIPE/ceramic coated, ported turbo with GT28 wheels/ceramic coated and it was at an outstanding price.
The cheapest I can find the GT28RS for now is around $900-$1100.00.
I love this one and was running up to 20PSI before I broke my engine but that was at 120,000 miles. I have a kickass forged/balanced/ceramic coated/dry filmed new engine now.
I hope to hit around the lower 20's in boost. I just have it at 18PSI for now until the Spring and the I will up it and tune some more.
I love the instant boost and crazy torque this Nick turbo makes.
You can get a 6PSI WGA from ATP for around 60$ or least I did a while back. I have an adjustable WGA now set to 18PSI.
It was cheaper back them to. A lot of us around here got the same treatment. There was about 5 or 6 of us at them time.
I took my broke one apart it was cool. I cooked the bearings on the hot side. I was going to rebuild it but I cant the damn company to call me back so I can buy the parts I need to fix it. I will just send it back to Nick.
The .64AR GT28 is very muck like the Nick turbo. Either one should make you happy.

Well I really can't decide what to do, I'm not out for any huge power gains, but when something needs to be fixed I find it a practical excuse to upgrade... My t25 is not in great shape however it boosts decently low yet, and I don't want to lose that... The little frankenstein sounds like what I want but at that price a new gt28 sounds just as tempting...

Well I will be shipping this one off to Nick in a couple of weeks. If he says it is good to go and rebuilds it then I will pm you and see if you want to buy it.
Not sure what the price will but it will be less than the other two options.
Then you will have a good stock turbo and a Nick turbo :)
But it all depends on if Nick says this one is worth fixing and from what I can tell it is. It looks to be in very good shape other than the one bearing.
Man a turbo is a fairly simple device all the mystery has worn off now :(

yash, when you spun the turbo, how did you hook up the WGA bracket? It's been a long time since I have seen the stock turbo, but from what I remember, there was only 2 bolts to mount it up. Spinning it would put those 2 bolts 180* from where they need to be to mount up the bracket.

that is confirmed, 505.... there are only the two "pre-drilled" holes for the WGA. It looks like nothing externally is in the way, it seems like a secondary bracket would suffice.

That would be excellent... As for the mystery, i guess there isn't a whole lot, but science... A whole lot of that...
I'm probably going to pull my turbo off later this morning if the car can make it from the garage to the shop, my tires hate snow... Ill probably mess with clocking it and change my IC pipes already and get them powder coated. I also want to pull the head to check that out, maybe change the timing belt, and check if there is any engine work done. I picked up the car wholesale and it has a fair amount done to it, but I have no clue what it all is; I give it a 1 in 10,000 shot it has internals or anything else done, I want to know for sure though...

Two bolts, easy money. The latest turbo has the WGA kind of flipped with the wastegate line on the top instead of the bottom like my first turbo.
Works fine though.
I did not have to spin it just turn it until it was in the correct position to hook up to the ic pipes etc.

Oh, I gotcha now. I misunderstood your first post when you said that you reclocked yours.

Last night I had the turbo out except for the damn oil feed line won't come loose, I tried modding a wrench and heat, still no go... I also had to cut mt damn exhaust, a nut rounded over on the flange for the s pipe... Tonight I pulled my A/C, And I'm thinking the power steering might go as well. I also did some motor mount filling with silicone (I don't like vibration like the AWRs did in my MP3) I'm trying to clean out my engine bay as much as possible, without going past the point of not being able to put things back the way they were...

Well I did clock it a bit, like if you went from mid-night to 1.
It was way off when it came back of course there is now way to gauge where to turn it off the car. So I had to put the whole assembly up there and get it just right.
