So I cracked my trans open yesterday and had a look at my differential that went zoom zoom boom. I sheared the teeth right off the spider gears (the top and bottom ones that rotate around the left to right gears)

I just called mazda and all four gears are around 48 per gear(x4) and thats almost as much as I can get a new(used) trans for. Can I use any differential from another F25-R transmission (as in not from a 99/00 1.8) or do the different final drive ratios mean no? If thats I should be able to install the spider gears from another F25M-R transmission right?

What car did the F25-R transmission come off from? I can't find any info on the F25-R to help you, also welcome to the F25M-R blown differential group, I had mine go last fall, I just ended up replacing the entire transmission, solved any major headaches with taking the old one apart and putting it back together.

I just came back from my shop as I had to clean up after doing a clutch/flywheel swap on an MSP.

I had a closer look at my trans and I noticed also that the final drive gear on the main shaft has a chip missing from it. As far as I know that gear is part of the mainshaft itself. I'll just get another trans I and maybe a tranny shop will give me 40 bucks for all the good parts left over so I can buy myself a case of beer for when I install another tranny.

Anyways here are some pictures.
You can see the side gears have the teeth shaved almost totally off in some spots, they *should* look like the main gears and not flat. The chunk gross looking metal and grease is the magnet from inside the trans and the last two pics are of the mainshaft with a chipped final drive gear.

Hey - you should send FLIP (from TOP and Ottawa) a message. He was helping me find a transmission for mine.

I am going to attempt to :P

I onlyjust picked up the parts last night. paid 600$ for the transmission, flywheel, clutch, pressure plate, and the 2 axles.

The transmission has 65 000 km on it.

Considering the shop wanted 1600$ to replace mine.. I just have to make sure that the labour and fluids etc that will have to go into this - not to mention the food and beer to pay off my friends - will total less than a grand

the msp tranny is a direct replacement for the protege

Maybe for the 2L not for the 1.8L

FunkRider

Clutch, flywheel, both left and ride side engine mount brakets and axles.

Really? Because the AWR mounts are compatible with both engine / trans combos (I have them in my car)

If you take your time and you should be able to find all the parts for relatively cheap anyways. It's better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it.

The actual side mount brackets are different because the G series transmission is larger which requires the engine to be offset more to the passenger side of the car.

That's why the AWR motor mount install was a B***H..

Ok I'm in the middle of doing this swap right now. I got the msp trans, j-spec msp flywheel, exedy clutch, ss clutchline, msp axles, msp trans mount bracket and trans mount. got everything off and out(1.7 hrs) and broke a bolt off in the flywheel. F**kin crapy torque wrench is now in the trash!! good thing snap-on will be by tomorrow. I won't get the trans bracket till monday or tuesday from mazda but this is going to work. Guess I'll weld the diff in the mean time.

Oh man - can you do me a huge favour and keep a list of everything you ended up needing. I have all the same parts you've got (minus the firewall motor mount)

:P If you feel like writing up a how -to while you wait for thursday..that'd be sweet too !

yeah I was planing to write one up if this works (and it will) since there's a lot of speculation on this topic but no hard facts. oh and the front mount bracket is different too but fortunatly it was still attatched to the transaxle when I bought it. for now though I'll be updating the progress in this thread.

hey is that a 2000 msp front bumper you got?

FunkRider
03-15-2008, 04:50 PM
Like I said, all of the mounting brackets are different. The 1.8 F series trans is located much more toward the center of the car vs the G series. The locations of the mounts to the car do not change nor do the mounts themselves change.

Also he has the stock 99/00 bumper with the 01+ sedan mazda lip

which 01+ sedan front lip? MP3? ES? verry interresting. it's a clean look.

It's just a factory option / "aftermarket" lip

Picked it up from njaremka's GB

any progress on this swap ? I'm really thinking of just selling the MSP transmission and picking up a regular 1.8L transmission.

Um correct me if Im wrong but can us with the F-series tranny make like some wierd sort of F/G combo tranny? Something like swap the axels and something else; allowing your to use the MSP diff and beefing it up to the point were we dont need to worry about blowing it out....? I have already replaced my transmission once because of blowing out the diff; anyone know anything about this concept? would be nice to be able to have one already put together and waiting for when this current transmission blows up, because we know its going to happen again lol.
