I just picked up a MSP last week. The HID that came with it has shitty ass beam pattern. My p5 had very even light distribution. This had hotspots galore. I'm wondering if anyone has a pic of their beam pattern from the msp WITHOUT projector retrofits. Just post them here. Please post clear pics. Just have a pic projected on to the road or 20 feet from a wall.
I'm just wondering if the buld would benefit from sitting farther back? What does the little "umbrella" do that shrouds the bulb?
thanks
I'll post pics of mine tonight to compare with the rest of you.. thanks!

Just swap out to Pro5 headlights!! Also, are the headlights that came in the MSP OEM or Ebay? Might be the cause of the crappy beam pattern

I don't have a pic, but I swapped for HID bulbs on my OEM MSP headlights, because the regular headlight was so damn bad. Projectors are my next step. Yes, there's lots of hotspots. Why they didn't use the P5 headlights, I have no idea.

Well I adjust the headlights a bit and it's way better now. But ya..I think a projector retrofit is in the works

i've had HID's in both housings, and the protege5's are MUCH better at dealing with them than the MSP's are.

Where do buy projector retrofits exactly? I know they have kits of some kind to do custom work.

projector retro-fits are ALL custom work
a good resource if you want to try it is the forum section at HIDPlanet.com

If you've got the time, skill, and extra headlights, I say do the retrofit yourself! There's afew How-to's and some really good forums out there only about retrofitting. PM Chicoloco. He did his own retrofit in his sedan headlights.
There's also afew guys out there that, you send em your headlights and a WHOLE LOT OF MONEY(probably close to $1000) and they'll send you back a really nicely done set of retrofitted headlights. Most offer your choice of projectors.

I found some bmw e36 projectors, lenses, and bulb holders in Ebay for around 70 bux. All I have to do is get an HID kit that will fit..then retrofit the headlights. I'll see what I feel like doing. Seems like a lot of work, but anything's possible. thanks guys!

stay away from the e36's - horrible beam pattern. you can get some fx's for that price, and they're bi-xenon.

yeah, the suv thing - do an ebay search for "FX35 projector" and you'll see some.

Ya Glen the sedan lights have a REALLY shitty beam pattern. SHould have told tony you wanted to keep your lights lol!
Mine are actually crisp as hell, but I added a spacer to move the bulb back just a hair to get a wicked cutoff. Don't remove the little "hat" covering the bulb or your beam pattern will get even worse and you'll jsut blind anyone who is comin at ya.

They were recalled because people were saying that they couldn't see the road signs at night, I heard the projector was sitting too far back from the shroud, losing illumination from the sides, and others that they were dim, but maybe they don't didn't know that xenon bulbs ages.

people were probably complaining because they purchased a $50k SUV with only slightly better than average headlights

Wait, so I can send these people my reflector and they can make me a custom ABS shroud? That's sweet! I might have to do that.

Take lots of pics. :D I'm gonna attempt a retrofit this summer.
It'd be nice to have more references on protege headlights besides chico's and kansei's retro threads on hid planet.

I'll have mine done around spring. I'm collecting right now. Gonna have retro and my rims on at hopefully the same time!
