So what do you do with the gas cap......

I hate letting the gas cap dangle against the fender. There are some strange features on the inside of the fuel door, but I have not figured out a way to hook the cap there.

Suggestions?

someone posted a video of how to put the gas cap, i couldn't find it in the searches....

the part that screws in basically is facing the gas door, and the little hook thing on the right side, goes in between the gap of the gas cap. it kinda slides in and almost feels like a magnet. hard to explain, you'll get it once you see the video.

OMG! How bizarre is that? I rushed out to the garage as soon as I saw this. I dropped the cap a couple of times before realizing my hook was bent more open than the one in your picture. I bent it back and it mostly works.

Trust me it can do damage, albeit very light damage. If there is a breeze blowing it'll rattle against your paint and scuff it up.

Here in NJ we don't pump our own gas, and I've never seen a gas station attendant take the time to clip it to the inside of the fuel door. They unfailingly always let it dangle.

I removed the hanging device and hold the cap in my hand or set it on the pump when I pump. Nobody pumps my gas for me either.

You don't pump your own gas?(eek2) Man, I have not seen a station with attendants since the 70s, but the closest I have been to NJ since then has been Philly last year. Must be a union thing?

yeah, was filling up in NJ when i was visiting my GF over christmas and i forgotten that you CAN'T pump you own gas, its not even an option.

whats funnier when people come to JMU from NJ and they walk into a gas station and asking why no one is filling up their car and the gas clerks looks at them with this shocking look like " you want someone to fill up your gas?"

Well I see I was not the only person that was in the dark and this thread has proven useful. I am not impressed with the robustness of the factory cap holding feature and after seeing the picture from Meha11, I decided to make my own tether clip. Please see the attached picture. It is made from 3/4" X 1/8" aluminum angle held in place with 3M heavy duty exterior foam tape. When I remove the cap, the tether almost jumps into the slot and the cap is secured against the back of the fuel door, out of the wind.

Yep good old NJ. The people pumping gas are deffinatly not in a union unless its for not speaking english or even spanish. Even when I try to pump my own and they yell at you and will not turn the pumps on. (they have to swipe a blank credit card for a cash sale) To stop them from dropping the cap against the body I just tore the cap teather off. Of course some wiseass gas jockeys try to put the cap on the roof now. Some people just suck. A funny little side note in NJ super is about 3.19, in NY 5 miles north from me super is 3.49 and they have to stand in the cold pumping it themselves.

I'm from NJ (live in TX now) and yeah, I miss the good 'ol days of not having o pump my own gas. people used to laugh at me when they heard that I didn't pump my own gas calling it "stupid" and "retarded" and all sorts of names. Then I say, "Well, when it's freezing and blowing cold rain around sideways, I stay in my nice toasty car when someone else pumps my gas." That usually stopped them cold.

FYI - if you DO cut the tether, just make sure they put the gas cap back on. Happened to me twice in the many fuel ups, but sometimes they DO forget to actually put the gas cap back on. Just be attentive.

another NJ guy here- and for 10 years i've had to watch whomever pumps the gas to make sure they put 93 in (things haven't changed even with this new car), so what you've said goes along with that for sure. i dunno how many times i'll say $XX of 93 or fill it with 93 and they start to put regular in it, hehe.

Just FYI,

Apparently you cant pump your own gas in Oregon either. Got yelled at/brow beaten on a roadtrip from here in texas to washington state for doing so. It was pretty weird...didnt know if i was supposed to tip the guy or not.

As it turns out, some locals mentioned your not supposed to tip, and oddly, said you can pump your own diesel.
