How much work would it be to switch to a bose HU from a regular ms3 sport 6disk in dash? would i have to install an amp and spend over 800?

Yes.
It's not worth it, time or money.

The "special" part of the Bose set up is more the amp, sub, and speakers, not so much the head unit. The only advantage of the Bose head unit is that the speaker level outputs are more flat and consistent, so that the amp is getting a non-distorted signal to work with. For $800 I would say to after-market.

I'd say go aftermarket. If I could have bought just the moonroof without the Bose on my GT, I would have. It sounds like garbage. My 368 watt Infinity in my '07 Wrangler blew it out of the water, and even that wasn't too highly impressive.

That being said, I would never change the headunit on my 3. Nothing else would look right. It matches the rest of the vehicle. My understanding is that you can upgrade your amp, speakers, sub, etc. without needing to change the H/U like on some other models such as Chrysler. Talk to FourthMeal. He's an expert.

For that much money you can get a nice under seat equalizer to correct the response curve, stick an upgraded amp in, and upgrade the speakers and get to keep the factory appearance. Assuming you can do the work yourself, I'd keep the stock H/U.

thanks boys! yeah...its sounds pretty bad.. i want to bump it but its shit... the reason i asked about the bose was because of the mp3 disks that it reads... but i just got a new ipod so i can use the aux imput... im not impressed with the stock h.u. ability to read disks though... i want to amp all the speakers... and do a flush sub like the picture below

That last pick looks like a clean install. I'm not sure about the MP3 bit. In the owner's manual it says if your deck reads MP3 compressed discs, it will have the "MP3" logo on it. I have the Bose 6-disc and no MP3 logo. Of course, I don't have any MP3 discs to try it out, but I presume mine wouldn't play them. And about the stock H/U, ya gotta love those disco lights!
