My friend just bought an MSP and it came with the OEM hood and the EVO8 CF hood.. He was wanting to sell me to cf hood for a hell of a price. I was just wondering if anyone has this hood and if they have experienced any troubles with it due to the vents in the hood?

I had it, had to get rid of it. It rains alot down here and the entire front end of the engine bay gets wet. Rust all over the heat shield, heat shield bolts, engine cover bolts, exhaust mani bolts and turbo. But it worked wonders when it wasn't raining. You could see the hot air escaping from the engine bay at a stop light. It also cracked at the openings after time.

Buy it anyways, it did look nice and was functional. I think there are "caps" or something to plug the vents when it rains, didn't get them though (bought it used as well)

yeah i was looking into doing something to cover the vents.. if you know where to get them i'd appreciate it.. for the price i can get it for, i'd be dumb not to buy it, but i dont wanna have problems with my engine bay and have it start to rust

you could probably just buy some fiber glass (and resin) from Home Depot and do it yourself.

1 Go to the grocery store and buy wax paper
2 turn the hood upside down
3 lay the wax paper over "holes"
4 cut fiberglass into tiny shreds
5 mix fiberglass, resin and hardner together
6 pour mixture into grooves over wax paper
7 let dry overnight
8 pull up wax paper
9 apply weather stripping (purchased from Home Depot)
10 apply fasteners (again, purchased from Home Depot)
11 done

12 paint if necessary

^^ thanks.. im gonna look around and see if anyone makes/sells some kind of covers because i'm sure quite a few people have ran into this problem

fwiw evos don't have anything to prevent water getting in. there are directional louvers which i'm sure help but the holes still go straight through (you can buy the louvers separately if you want). the heatshield is also painted (i think, haven't looked under there in a little while). i haven't noticed any abnormal or excessive rust in the 2.5 years i've driven mine and it never sees a garage and my favorite time to drive is during snowstorms

well, worst case scenario, you can do it yourself. You may as well buy it, if it's that good of a deal, though.

I'm sure others will chime in soon enough.

I could always find some way to cut up the factory heat shield and fill in the vents, or even try and use the whole heat sheild some how.. idk, but i'm gonna buy it next weekend for sure and figure out some way to block the holes

EDIT: If i happened to use the factory heat shield, would it even hold up from getting rained or snowed on since it would be directly getting wet?

what is the size of the vent on that hood? could you just use an OEM evo inlay?

http://lancershop.com/customer/product.php?productid=939&cat=0&page=1

water hitting the heat shield shouldn't be a problem, it just evaporates on contact and it hits in drops so is not like pouring a bucket of cold water on it. i can't remember the protege heat shield exactly but why would you need to modify it? are there large gaps?

^^ i will have to check that out and see if they will fit..There aren't any gaps on my heat shield. I didn't know if i could use it on the hood or if i would have had to just cut out the vent layouts and just cover the vents that way

i don't really understand what you're planning on doing. i think you want to take the heat shield off from the turbo and flatten/cut/weld it to clog the holes in the hood? if so just picking up some sheet metal would be way easier but still defeat the purpose of having the holes to begin with.

i'd say just put it on and see how dusty/dirty it gets. if it gets too dirty for your liking then try the evo louvers. if it's still too dirty then plug the holes. you're not going to hurt anything by running it with open holes, just make things more dirty. many evo people take off the louvers, either because they got a tubular manifold that goes up in the space that the louvers are or just to show off what's under their hood, with no problems and the layout of the protege is basically the exact same. the only possible differences are if the vents on the protege hood aren't positioned correctly over the turbo so water goes to bad, flat places and the fact that the o2 sensor is in the exhaust manifold on the protege and could get dripped on (though shouldn't be an issue given where o2 sensor #2 is)

the vents are large enough that they start over the engine cover on the top and rad fans towards the front. Everything is exposed to the rain.

jred321

so what you're saying is it's a shitty product and makes is designed so you can't use it like you should?

the rad fans should be fine, i wouldn't want water sitting on top of my valve cover though

I had the DG engine cover on it, so water only collected in the passenger-forward "stud hole", rusted the bolt right to the stud. All of the Heat Shield screws rusted, which in turn rusted nickel sized spots on the heat shield. the biggest concern was the rust on the actual turbo... right between both housings, all around the oil feed line. I sprayed WD-40, praying the nut would thread out when I removed the turbo a few weeks ago.

But, then again, I live in the tropics, where it rains 75% of the year w/ no garage.

that sucks. maybe the easiest thing is to rig a small piece of black plastic to the top of the underside of the vent to make the water flow onto the heat shield instead of those bad areas

the heat shield is too small. all it really covers is the exhaust mani.

i found a pic http://www.mazdas247.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=46267 i'd say don't use the evo hood, the turbo is wide open for abuse from above

no i meant the heat cover from the underneath of the hood.. the cloth/fiberglass material thing that covers the whole underside of the hood.. its easier to explain in person than over the computer if ya cant tell.. i was just thinking if i could rig it to where i can use the whole cover on the evo hood or if the parts exposed to the vents would get ruined and fall apart due to the water

i got what you're saying now. i'd say don't do that, it'll be super ugly.

you can see on the evo how they took care to cover the turbo itself with the manifold/heat shield https://secure.buschurracing.com/catalog/images/evopolished2.jpg though not so much in this case cause there's a huge turbo that sticks out beyond the shield on there but you get the idea. the protege doesn't have that protection over the turbo, it's just sitting there saying "please let water accumulate on top of me so i can rust" http://www.mazdas247.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=46267

lol thats what i was thinkin.. i'm just throwin up some ideas.. idk if im gonna be buying it or not because i dont want my nice engine to rust everything and bolts being rusted in.. unless i can come up with a great plan that will look good and not let water on the engine, i wont be buying it.. Even though filling in the holes will defeat the purpose but i like how the hood looks

well, if you follow the instructions (from above), when you pull out the wax paper, those pieces of "filler" will be removable.... meaning, when it's summer (and not raining up there?) you leave them out. When it's winter (and snowing) you put them in. problem solved and you get to drive w/ a CF "evo" hood :)

hmm.. never thought of it like that.. that sounds like a pretty good plan

Hey Brandon its Sean. You dont need to worry about any of this. The hood has a fiberglass cover that screws onto the hood, and yea I am cuttin ya a pretty good deal on it ;)

Here are some pictures to show the fiberglass cover and the hood for you and to reference for others.

I have that same hood .Soon as I got it I took it apart and painted the siver mesh yellow to match my car but it looks like in the pic your mesh is black. my only problem with the hood is when I first put it on the two front corners would catch alot of wind and at 65 mph it looked like the thing was gonna break and fly off my car. I bought and installed hood pins and they were pretty easy to install but it does put holes in the hood.

Needs to be fitted a little bit to line it up perfect but other than that it was really simple and we put it on in like 10 mins. I think it looks better on the silver than it did on my spicy.
