I'm pulling my stock airbox out to replace it with an AEM SRI, while trying to remove a bolt off something with a 10mm socket, I heard a snap, and, well, something broke. What is it?

that's the purge solenoid
you just joined countless people here who broke it... it's expensive and it's needed!
it broke because improper procedure was used to take off that nut... you can't just grab that thing by hand and try to brute force that nut loose, nor can you just try to loosen it without holding onto it... you need a big wrench fitted over the metal part of the solenoid to hold it in place while you take the nut off...
I have NEVER broken these things doing it the correct way... I usually just use my impact wrench to get it off and on... less PITA

Stupid question, but, how bad did I just hurt my wallet? And, is this available at the local auto parts store?
Or, do I need to order from the mazda dealer?

first, hooray for "the man" true to form!!(drinks)
ya, that part is some bucks, not sure the local AZ is going to have that one, you can try them though...good luck! oh, we've all learned the hard way...:)

Sorry, it's an 03 with a 5 speed. So, it is the purge valve? Hmm. Should I even try to start the car? Crap. This is no fun now. As to not using an impact wrench, I don't have one. All I've got is a set of wrenches and sockets.

And, to those who have chimed in already, THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks to all for the superfast replies!!
Well, I got the intake all installed, and it's done, but, I'm stuck till I get a new purge solenoid.
Dumb question still though, am I safe to start the car? Will I just get a CEL? It's hanging half out of my garage, which is on a pretty steep slope.

it looks like you can get a small length of hose, with a hose coonector and clamp it down at both ends and save some $$
mx-p5

That would've worked, but, just after taking the picture, i snapped the top one off too, so, I'm pretty much up sh!t creek without a purge solenoid to get back downstream
Also, turns out the parts department at the local dealer is closed Saturday and Sunday. Yippiee for me

Man, that sux! I just pm'd you but will post the link for the part here and maybe someone else can confirm that it is the right one.

**edit**Ok just realized the part I linked you to falls under the egr system. There is another solenoid valve listed under 'emission components' but nothing in the list shows?? Since your parts dept. is closed, give him a call tomorrow.

I did this when I installed my SRI too. I broke the bottom half using my air ratchet, I thought I was screwed. But I fixed it as is.
What I did was get the broken piece out of the hose, next I took the solenoid to a bench where I used an adhesive and an adhesive quickener. After it dried, I tested it to see if it was still gonna cause some sort of leak/vacuum. So after I tested that. I used epoxy to cover up the crack area. When the epoxy dries it's a stronger material than the plastic used. When putting the epoxy on though, you'll have to put 1 or 2 coats of the stuff on it around the cracked area.
Also, don't put too much epoxy around the hose area, as you need to put the hose back on and if you force it back on, you might snap the thing internally and after that, you have to get a new Purge Solenoid.

Just plug the lines for now until you get the new one or repair the old one..you can drive it that way..you just won't have the Vacuum leaks.
This is just emmissions related IIRC.
Plug the hoses..get the part..and in the mean time..drive the car.

How is he suppose to plug and go? He snapped the bottom part of the solenoid/hose. I'm not saying that he's not able to drive, but I mean, he should try to get it fixed first w/o driving around. Unless he has to get it to a shop or something.

Unless he has to get it to a shop or something.Hello..McFly...Its a rubber hose....Plug it with something after removing the broken barb from it
You can use a lot of things to plug a hose..a round solid piece of plastic...a Vacuum cap....(made for this) or even a screw...Just something to plug the line..
Its not fluid in there..I am sure its just a vacuum signal for some emissions controls.
It shouldnt hurt anything..but it may cause a CEL..But that can easily be cleared after installing the new selenoid.

is this part something that can be grabbed at a pick n pull . I dont know exactally what it is that is needed because I have never removed mine from my car. But I do have a local pick n pull that might would have it and if not that place then about 20 miles from me is an import only pick n pull but I have not had the pleasure of going there yet.

you'll have a hard time finding this shit as it comes only on late model mazdas... plus you won't know where to look on a different mazda
just order Z504-18-741A and don't EVER fuck with this shit again
and if you do want to pull the hoses off, never try to just brute force it off... you gotta get something like a trim remover tool and gently work/pry it off

Thanks, I'll order that today. I wasn't even trying to get the hoses off, I was trying to get the nut off so I can attach the whole thing to the new intake. Oh well. I'll plug up the lines for now until the new part shows.
Once again, a HUGE THANK YOU TO EVERYONE!!!!!!

Alright, I searched the PN The Man gave me on onlinemazdaparts.com and it came up with 5 different parts, but, they've all got the same number. Am I safe to order any of them? Is the same part used on all different Mazda motors? Thanks again in advance to everyone!!

You are good to go with that part #. Mazda just used the same part for several apps. If you scroll to the bottom of the page after looking it up you will see an app for the 2.0L

Alright, problem 2!!1
I had to pick my wife up in my car, and while driving, I heard a ticking start, then, it felt like the car died, but, it was still running idling while driving at about 100rpm, as i reved, it sputtered enough to keep driving, being 1 block from the house, and the power steering felt like it also went out.
Could this due to not having a purge solenoid? I did get a CEL too. It flashes at me
Would replacing the purge solenoid fix this? Or do I need to get out the vaseline and go to the mechanic?

I was about to ask you how does it drive with the lines capped off. Um.. as far as the CEL flashing I dont think that is good at all.

I drove over 30 miles, then, ticking, clicking, powersteering stopped, and idle dropped to 100rpm and car started to shake and shudder. Drove it that way the last 1/4 mile
What did I just screw up?

Are you sure verything as far as the CAI is tight, clamped, flushed even, plugged in?

good point however I think any issue with that would of camp up early when he was driving... unless he was driving hard then it happened. (only thing I can think of)
He could always reset the ECU and drive it upto like Autozone and hope like hell the CEL light comes on right before he gets their for them to read it. But I'm not sure if i would want to be driving it witha blinking CEL going on.
Edit: If the CEL is blinking does it give of a code like the old school OBD-I system in my truck. Grant it I would have to plug crap in to get the CEL to blink but you never know.

After looking back under the hood, I did not have the solenoid connector plugged in. And, I was shifting with 5000 being the highest. So, as of now, i just uncapped the hoses, connected the plug and disconnected the batter and pumpeed the brake 10 times and waiting ten minutes to try again
I'll post back in afew to see where she's at

Well, it seems powersteering is normal, but, I didn't move the car, just turned the wheel. As to idle, it seems normal as well, but, the car has a real bad shudder whileidling at all rpm's. So, it's gonna sit in the garage till Monday, then head to the mechanic's on a tow truck. Poop on a stick

yeah, tell me about it. Oh well. I ordered a new purge colenoid, so, just gotta wait on that to show, then, once it's here, install it, then have a towtruck pick me up and take me to a mechanic, where I can hopefully get this covered under warranty.
Fingers crossed

Most things that are physically broken by our own stupidity, or that are wear and tear items are usually NOT covered by warranty.

I am buying the new solenoid myself and putting it on and possibly putting the stock intake back on and having my mechanic fix whatever else is wrong.
