best thing I've done to the home. We did it in the last one as well, and it increased the value of the home quite a bit. Great for entertaining, if you can't convince the woman you "need it" grab a business projector from someone and show her a 100+" screen of dirty dancing on your wall...that works all the time :)

not nearly as nice/expensive as what some of you guys have, but hey, it works fine for me :)

here you go, took the pics in relatively dim lighting because i was watching the Orange Bowl (sucks VT lost (sad2))

Pioneer speakers up front, Sony rear speakers, Yamaha sub, and an Onkyo receiver. Note the homemade speaker stands using 2x4's (and a lot of flat black spray paint lol)

I put the office chair next to the screen to show its proportional size (92" diagnal)

I think the whole setup (projector + screen + sound system) cost me just under $1600, talk about bang-for-buck eh (evil)

well, i don't blame UPS for this, with any shipping company shit is getting kicked arround so you have to pack it accordingly, i got my whole Onkyo 7.1 Surround system off Ebay and it arrived without a scratch, why, because it was packed tight and snugg in the boxes, this one on the other hand, in the bottom of the box was the reciever and ontop of it was popcorn, that's it

true. no replacement for OE packaging. When my receiver was delivered, the OE box was wrapped in another layer of cardboard, and not completely either--just enough to hide the identifying print...
It's a miracle it survived. The AVR5700 is the furthest thing from lightweight since it has one (possibly 2) beefy transformers inside. It weighs in the neighborhood of 50-75#

did you know Onkyo receiver's wattage output rating is actually much more conservative than other companies' claims? something like their 65w rating is equivalent to other companies' 100w rating, etc.

Do you have plans to paint that all of that trim black (but don't touch the bar)? The trim and the screen frame would look great like that. Perhaps if you go that route, you should stain and clear-coat the bare wood on the bar to match your coffee table.

I need to take pics of my 2 setup.

Living has a 52" Mistu DLP
HD-DVD player
PS2
Wii
Sony receiver

Loft has a 32" LCD
Sony upconverting DVD player.

Thinking about moving the game systems up to the loft but not sure. And when I get a proper surround sound set up downstairs the current setup will go in the loft (probably minus the rear speakers)

We finally got furniture in the loft this past weekend so it's finally all set up!

HTPC, all my Rock Band instruments on the wall, and some of my transformers

I pride myself on trying to find the least expensive way to build a killer home theater, and I think I've found it:

Parts Express has Dayton Satellite theater speakers for $85 for all 5...and they are really fantastic speakers for the price.

PE has a Dayton 10" subwoofer for ~$105

Harman Kardon DIRECT sells refurbished HK receivers, and they are a great deal (not to mention directly from the manufacturer!) For instance they have the AVR 147 available for $266.

This means you can put a pretty impressive system together for about $456 for the main parts. This is astounding, I think.

Right from the manufacturer, like I said.

But the 147 seems a better deal at $266 (and features that are worth the difference.)

for those of you with home theater set ups, someone told me that all the wiring should be at the same length? Is that true for better sound? I have my front speakers next to my tv so I cut the wires shorter so I din't have all the excess wiring where there is already no more space. He says the sounds goes through it quicker because of the smaller length and is why they should all be at the same length. I didn't want to argue with him because typically he is full of shit, and also I had a buddy of mine help me set it up and I know he knows what he is doing and would have said something about it. saying this, my setup sounds fine with cable/movies/consoles.

Micaspd6 I am hella jealous of your domain.

Unfortunately the only photos I have of my/my roommate's 61" Samsung projection screen are from when we first bought it around last Christmas, still living in KY.
Now it resides as our living room centerpiece, mobbed by stacks of DVDs, 2 Xbox 360s, a PS3, DS, 2 PSPs, and the empty hole that was our Wii before we used it to bail some friends out of jail (we thank that bondslady for accepting the trade!).

Pretty ghetto setup back then, now it's on a nice stand. The dog -was- for size comparison, but at that perspective, there's no telling how big she is.

factual. Some people can discern slight variances in the speaker setup. However, if your receiver has one of those auto setup functions where it calibrates the speakers based on a microphone array, then you don't really have to worry about it. Minor differences won't be noticed, but if you are talking 10' longer than a 15' cable, that's a fairly significant difference.

my front speaker wire length is +/- 5' and my rears toward my couch are probably about 18-20' from the receiver. It did have some automatic calibration but I don't know enough about that. Like I said, it sounds good. And I do have a ton of wire left. It is a Sony receiver and we swapped it from the original 5 dvd Sony receiver and kept the four speakers.

for those of you with home theater set ups, someone told me that all the wiring should be at the same length?
All the wires? no. That would be a phenomenal waste of money...

I've heard the same line in the past, and the way I interpreted it was that you use the same length for each pair of speakers. For my setup, I have 4 8' cables for the fronts (1 for bass/midrange & highs, 1 for built-in sub), a 6' for the center, and a mess (50' each ?) of 14ga. 'zip cord' for the rears.

I think the whole point of doing something like this is so that one speaker in a pair doesn't seem louder than the other, especially over long cable runs...
While the impact may be perceived as slight, wiring still imposes a load on the system. Yeah, most new receivers allow you to adjust each channel's output, but there are 2 unspoken truths: 1) "...That sounds about right..." is usually at least 2db off. 2) Of those that actually bother to set levels, not many will go through the trouble to use a meter to get it right.

I'll add that the mystery of speaker wire is a very messy thing, as well.

Unlike the speed of light, electricity doesn't travel all that fast through copper speaker wire. Its quick, but its not near the speed of light. So very large differences in speaker wire distance can make a difference. However, our ears can't notice subtle things like this too easily, and often room background noise or acoustic imperfections will more then mask just about any deviation you have in speaker wire distance, or in most cases the quality of wire.

I've seen a LOT of people get hacked off when I end up proving (via ABX testing) that their $100/ft speaker wire is no better at playing music then $2/ft stuff. And I used to strut the expensive stuff because it was my job, until I wised up and found that most wire will do just fine. Again, its not that the better wire isn't actually better, because usually it IS...its the fact that room imperfections, or the slightest background noise in a room (like A/C) pretty much annihilate any chance of actually hearing the improvement.

The most important thing I've learned to never skimp on is actually the connections at each end of the wire. Bare wire will rarely do well in the long run. For a week-long connection, it is perfectly fine, but for the long haul, its best to use spades/bananas, best you can find.

I can also say this, and with authority:

ANY cheap amp (like these Sony's, Onkyo (low to mid-line) or really anything under $1500+ is going to have imperfections in its design, negating ALL mistakes in wiring, including distance. There is nothing wrong with a cheap amp of course...its not like you're missing anything special with a less expensive one. Subtle nuances of a musical score just add to the room character and spaciousness of the system, and most rooms aren't made to that spec...most are made to an architect's spec and not an acoustician.

+1

I did an impromptu A/B test between the spool of Home Despot 14ga speaker wire (with the gold RatShack solder-on banana plugs) on my rear speakers and the expensive MIT Terminator cables on my front speakers.
There wasn't much of a difference--the high end was a little more 'chirpy' with the zip cord, but that was all I noticed.

Would I make that purchase again, knowing this? Yes. After some extended listening, I liked the sound I was getting from the more expensive cables.
Would I recommend them to others? Only if they could get them on-loan and do their own comparison, otherwise no. Get a spool of wire (12ga or better?), some good ends, and call it a day.

I guarantee that in a real test even using an RTA you will see no difference between identical speakers using 5 feet of wire and 50 feet of the same wire.
The trick is that even paired speakers sound slightly difference especially when location is taken into account and the acoustical properties of that position.

90% of audio is complete BS based on so called experts that are completely full of crap. You can see this in the many challenges of Richard Clark that no one can cash in on.

It is a JL audio GOTHAM. The newest offering from JL's home line. Both drivers are the top of the line 13" JL. They are both powered by a 3800 watt amp built in. It is fully adjustable with microphone adjustment for room compensation.

The cabinet takes 4 weeks to build and is like no other design out there. The whole thing weighs 400+ pounds and once it was moved down my basement I knew the thing was here to stay. In my eyes this is the best sub there is period. I have had many brands and even 3 Servo 15's at the same time before this and the clarity and impact cannot be matched.

The fact that I have it where I do really makes no difference because this is the FIRST sub I have owned or heard that you cannot locate in the room no matter where you are, it is truly amazing.

The extra receiver is for the rest of the basement audio zones. The DVD players all have separate functions, projector, audio only, and DVD audio based on what I like for picture and audio.

I have been into the Denon stuff since the early 90's so yea I guess I'm kinda stuck (help). I have thought about upgrading to so ridiculous equipment but I have other hobbies and the return on my investment is not worth the 3-4X the cash IMHO.

Thanks for the comments though I do really enjoy being able to get away when I can or have friend and family over for a night at the movies. The Xbox has more room than it looks and I have not had any issues yet but I will consider your comment and maybe move the shelves to give it more room.

It seems that way; I checked out JLs site on the Gotham (the Fathom is nice to be sure as well). Omnidirectional is a good thing though - does it muddy out the front or front right imaging at all?

Looks like you got yourself a bit of a Denon and Carver fetish going on too :)

The stage is totally unaffected and if anything improved because you cannot locate the bass up front. There is NO way to muddy up the sound with this Sub. I have tried settings from extreme to reference which are fun for movies but not so much for music. It is amazing how good this sub is though.

I have to share this... I got a pretty good deal on eBay today. Emailed Polk Audio early this morning asking if they had a wall bracket kit that would allow me my RM7500SATs to the wall and have the ability to im them? A fella named Ken answers my email stating that there is no kit from Polk for those but recommends the OmniMount 10.0. So I start looking and find a set or 2 on ebay. One of the finds is a full set of 4, plus an additional one that is bagged up in a zip lock bag but in the original packaging. I see that they are located in my very own town of Springboro. It has a couple days left and I email them asking what it would take to get them to end the auction. Surprisingly I get a response rather quickly. $19.99 ad local pickup is fine... assuming that is each since the are like $25-30 online. I get there and its $19.99 cash. So... to make a long story short, I picked up 5 complete sets of the brackets for $19.99, with tax. She actually gave me the penny... it was a good day. :)

just be sure to do your research before you buy. Check the AVS forums (avsforum.com). Almost every model of TV has their own thread that you can read through and help you figure out if your choice is a good one for your needs.

Samsung and Sharp are the two that you need to be looking into. Anyway, those systems kick are going to look like shit anyway. The systems just can't handle the technology these days... I have two Samsungs as well. My 67" and 42" are both Samsung DLPs. One other thing I suggest you look for is some form of gaming mode where you can turn off a lot of the processing that causes display lag. Even a few milliseconds can ruin your head shot (as I found repeatedly in GoW with my 42").

House is pre-wired. Have speaker wall plates where all the speakers are, like the one above the center channel (that I am not using). For that it is just easier to run the wire straight to it. The central distribution is just behind the TV stand.

Before I left Turkey I sold my Sony Bravia 50". Now I'm back in the states and gonna get something bigger.
Mitsubishi 60" DLP is currently the apple of my eye. I could even go with their 65" & still have plenty of room for my components.
I plan on getting a Sony blu-ray system with wireless surround sound speakers from the store on base.
The wife told me I can't run a pc to the tv like when we were in turkey but I'm gonna get a mini desktop and hook it up via hdmi.
Running a small wireless mouse & keyboard combo will win her over.

Just a few shots of my projector room. It's an above the garage type bonus room and measures 13ftx20ft. The video setup is a 120" 16:9 diagonal (104"x60") pull-down screen and an Optoma HD70 DLP 720p projector. Audio setup is not cutting edge, but I find it hard to justify replacing the current setup. Note the large 80's era bookshelf speakers serving as the center channel. LOL

Awesome...I live in a Condo now but someday...If I get a house...I would love to have a dedicated home theater room...Very nice setup you've got there, sok07...Keep us updated! (2thumbs)

As for my current setup...

- 50" Pioneer KURO (1080p)

- Matching Pioneer stand with built in speakers (currently not in use)

- Panasonic cable box / DVR (rented from the cable provider) connected via HDMI

- PS3 with Video output by HDMI and Audio by optical cable

- Logitech Z-5500 5.1 system (formerly my gaming pc speakers) connected by optical cable to the PS3

- Location...The living room

- Furniture...A low & wide couch about 5.5~6 feet from the KURO

It's a simple setup on a budget...I know I need an amp to centralize all the connections and provide proper power to the speakers.

Despite the current "make-shift" style (cable & TV can only be heard through the KURO speakers while DVD/Blu-ray/Gaming audio can only be heard through the Logitech system...Which works fine for now :) )...I'm quite happy with the setup...I absolutely LOVE watching Blu-ray on the KURO....It provides an amazing visual experience and the little Logitechs do a damn fine job of completing the whole experience! Thanks.

A little bit of both. The 997 will have HDMI switching, all the new audio formats, and Trinnov sound processing. Suppose to be pretty sweet. I will move the 950 upstairs then to replace a 15 year old HK AVR20-mkII.

I'll upgrade to Blu-ray when it is the standard, and much cheaper. Not worth the $400 still. I'm pissed at Sony for forcing a "format war" yet again, just like they do with every bit of technology that is out there. They have to whet their beak in everything and make it proprietary to them only, or have other companies pay rights to it.

Nice. Couple suggestions - you should get rid of the DVD/game case that's to the right of the PS3. That's where the exhaust vent is and you don't want anything blocking it!

I'd also suggest a set of cheap coasters to put between your reciever and cable box to help the two breathe better.

Are those two tall thin things speakers as well?

I, I just noticed we have the same TV stand.

cords need cleaning up... I'm too lazy to make it perfect again though.

there is no exhaust port on that side of the PS3 slim, and don't care if the cable box overheats. Time Warner cable's problem, not mine. lol

yeah the tall skinny ones are the rear channels from the HTIB system (due for replacement at some point). the center channel resembles it and the old fronts are the same, both are packed away.

Thanks E. LOL

Didn't realize it was a slim. Cool - where are the exhaust ports then? The rear?

Finally got a real surround setup

Got the Bose lifestyle speakers powered by my Onkyo and a Sony sub

I know, guys laugh at guys bragging about Bose, but i'm thrilled to finally have a matching setup for surround!!

Better than my 1980's Bose floor speakers

Bose is highly hated among some, but its also the best selling brand out there for surround sound system, free standing speakers are another matter.
The important thing is you like them.

Amazon had a Denon in their deal of the day for $650 yesterday. Keep looking around you'll find something.

I prefer it as well, but Callie didn't want to see the speakers

Old speakers:

new speakers are on the little pole stands around the room.

I never could find a set of speakers that would match those floor speakers properly

If they dont like the big speakers, buy more expensive smaller ones.
Mine are thin although they house two 7" drivers.
smaller rooms are OK for tiny speakers.
Larger rooms need batter pattern control.

I used to have that TV. The light engines on those go bad after a while. It'll start with a pixel or two and spread like a pox across the whole display. Stuck mirrors. :(

Just not in the cards right now. I'm hoping after we move I'll be able to save for a receiver.

I have two Samsung DLPs, one 5 yrs old (42"), the other 3 yrs old (67"), no problems whatsoever.

Sound is my biggest hang up. I have small Polk speakers all around, with a decent sub. Wife already complains, but I need so much more!

mine is a rear DLP, and i've had it 4 years now and it was the display model i got from Circuit City when they went outa business. No problems yet, other than i hear it starting to cry. . . i think the bulbs going

side note, all DLP are projection.
No such thing as flat panel DLP.

Not that it matters much now that projection TVs are dead.

Also, glyph, you should look at some thinner speakers, on wall, or in wall.
You can get a lot of great sounding, low profile stuff these days.

If you can, post a pic and we may be able to come up with a nice compromise.

I posted pics in this thread back on page six link (http://www.mazdas247.com/forum/showpost.php?p=3608143&postcount=68)

That is the rental I was in a while ago. In this new house: I just painted my basement and now have plans for getting this all put together nicely, but I'm starting grad school in July, and I need to convert our loft into a bedroom for my growing daughter before I get to the system. Maybe I'll work in fits and starts... I'm going to build a gloss ebony black shelving system to handle the equipment, and a box to cover the wire runs so it's not so freaking ugly... it's a rat's nest behind the TV. I'm also going to get the speakers mounted on the walls properly.

Are you kidding me? I know H/K. I'm just stating that those come w/home computers (they came w/my office one). Why wouldn't you just drop some decent $ on a nice set of speakers for your bedroom?
And OBVIOUSLY I can see the connection linked to the laptop genius. But I'm assuming you hook those crappy (yes crappy) speakers to your nice tv.
I dont know how you can say they sound better than most tv speakers & car stereos.

I wish I wasn't deployed & all my crap wasn't in storage...67" Samsung mated to a Samsung bluray 7.1 surround sound w/direct pc hook up w/keyboard control, WD hi-def stand alone media player....that's just downstairs...
