View Full Version : Corksport motor mount inserts installed

I installed the Corksport motor mount inserts yesterday with some help from my neighbor (need another body to rotate the engine so the mount can go back in). Looking at these pieces, I think that filling in the gap in the rubber bushing may be only the secondary reason these things work. The factory mount is higher in the center than on the edges. This means that it can rock up and down easily when the engine tries to rotate. The inserts, in addition to filling in the gaps, change the profile to more of a hockey puck, the same thickness all the way across. This profile is much more resistant to rocking than the factory version.
The effect is very noticeable. It adds nothing unpleasant to the experience of driving the car.
When starting the car, I now feel it when the engine catches, and when starting out from completely stopped, things are a little different, but not in a bad way. You really notice how instantaneously the car starts moving under those conditions.
Without the slop, the tires don't do their "squirming" when I stomp on the gas so the car just takes off. Oddly enough, logically I know that this has to translate to better acceleration, but psychologically, losing the tire spin due to the engine motion breaking traction makes the car feel less powerful.
So much of our fun is all in our heads, I guess.
Summary, not too hard a swap and well worth the small change and time it took.

Very nice, where did you get the mount from?

its not a mount, u INSERT the inserts into the stock mount to stiffen it up

And I believe these do NOT work for the Speed.

i guess they have some that do, they seem to have the same design outline that the mount does,

I installed my MM inserts this past weekend. It was pretty easy to get the mount out, but once you add the inserts, it sure does make it tough to get the mount squeezed back in there. I really like how the car starts with these inserts.
One thing though, I need to get used to the slight increase in vibrations that you feel when you take off and the car is cold. Once the car warms up, the vibrations are minuscule.

My vehicle is a 2007 speed3.
I recommend having a friend around when it is time to put the mount back in.
I did this on jackstands in my driveway and getting leverage to rock the motor to where I could slip the mount in place was a bear. My neighbor crawled under with me and he pulled the motor into position with a prybar while I put the mount in place. The increased thickness of the mount makes it a challenge to get back in.
Looking at the pictures of the dogbone mount, and considering the new shape of the factory mount after the inserts are put in, I don't see that the dogbone would be much if any of an improvement over the stock mount with the inserts. Maybe with the extra hard material, but that small mount area looks like it would rock up and down pretty easily, whereas the stock one ends up with a much larger surface area, which should fight rocking even better.

the easy way around the difficult squeeze when putting the mount back in is to unbolt the mount that the rear mount is mounted to. this mount is the one that is bolted to the rear mount using that horizontal bolt. it is held in place by 3 bolts, and all you have to do is unbolt 2 of these 3 bolts and loosen the 3rd so that you can swing this around. after you do this, it's easy as pie to fit the mount back in...:D

That's odd, the corksport website says this is not for the speed3.

I saw those bolts and thought about it but I didn't know the torque specs on those bolts so I decided against it.

there's a mazda3 and a ms3 version to these inserts, actually. you must be looking at the mazda3 one.

ya, i just tightened them to the same torque (80 ft-lbs) as i did the other ones. i can't guarantee that's the proper spec, but that's an educated guess that i was willing to live with.
here's a pic of the additional bolts that i loosened (compliments of KaiserSoze from the other forums):

oh ya, there will be more stress placed on the stock bushing, but if it wears out, then you can just replace the whole thing...:D mounts will eventually fail anyways, so replacing them isn't the end of the world!

I would guess that the bushing should hold up pretty well, as the insert stops it from constantly flexing back and forth with motor movement. If pushed, I would guess that it should last longer than if left stock, and I don't believe it is considered a "wear item" that needs to be replaced unless it flat out breaks.

the flexing is actually bleeding off the energy by sinking it into the deformation of the rubber. if you don't bleed it off via deformation, it needs to go somewhere else, so i'm guessing it most likely causes additional stress to the rubber's contact points with the metal around it. there's two main ways (that i can see) for our mount to fail: 1. the rubber rips apart. 2. the rubber disconnects from the metal that encircles it and basically starts squishing loosely around.
i'm thinking that 2. is the one that we're gunning faster for when we use the corksport inserts, but since mounts last a LONG time (100k+ miles), so what if we lower the lifetime to like 60k-80k? when the time comes, just replace it! :D

The rocking that the mount is really meant to inhibit is the back and forth movement not side to side movement. Thats what the other mounts are for. I wouldn't expect to feel much difference between the two either. But I don't think that the inserts are really preventing anything from rocking side to side.
Good job on the mod though. I know I loved the new feel after I installed mine.

Thanks for the props, but I never said anything about side to side movement.
The way this motor is mounted, movement is rocking forward and backward, which would make the mount try to move up and down. I think the larger surface area of the mount with the inserts in place might actually give it an edge over mounts with a smaller surface area (like the dogbone). As I also mentioned, an absurdly stiff bushing material might be enough to overcome that advantage.
I think we actually agree here, I just don't know where the "side to side" thing came from.

ohhhh...something to think about: some people have complained about squeaking coming from the insert later on after a while. i think this may be caused by the insert rubbing against the the rubber, so i ended up greasing the insert (the inside portion) with some mobil 1 synthetic engine grease to make sure this doesn't happen. i don't know if i'm being too paranoid here, but i'm pretty darn sure i'm not hurting anything by doing this...=d

Are these urethane? If so, use white lithium grease instead to stop the squeaking.

I think lubing it would be exactly the opposite of what should be done. If mine starts squeaking, I'm going to pull it out and glue the pieces together. That should stiffen the whole thing up nicely. Make it more like a one piece unit.

i dunno...i, personally, think that the squeaking is from the poly of the inserts rubbing against the rubber of the bushings. we'll find out soon enough, i'm sure...if my mount starts squeaking, i'll know what to try out! :D

I've now had this thing on for a few days. I had assumed I would not feel much change but it really does feel better. Much more "solid" feel and shifting is definitely better. I was pretty stunned by how much space there was in the stock mount.
