I was just watching motorweek's show on tv today and they said something interesting about their long term cx-7.

"our CX-7 is currently off the road as the eager 244-horsepower 2.3-liter 4 developed a clatter in the valve train. Mazda says a small number of early CX-7s have this problem and the camshaft is being replaced under warranty"

Here is the link: http://www.mpt.org/motorweek/longterm/mazdacx707.shtml

I was one of the first to get my paws on the cx-7, actually I bought the first one at my dealer on june 06.

I have mentioned this 'clattering' to the dealer early on, they said it was 'normal'. I have mentioned it several times as a matter of fact when I bring it in for oil changes and they ask me if I have any concerns.

My car is now out of warranty at 37K

your thoughts?

Hopefully you had your concerns documented at your dealer so they have a record. If you still think your engine is noisy then take this information to the dealer. I thought that our Mazda warranty was 5y60K drive train and 3y/36K B to B?

Camshaft/valve trains would be covered under the powertrain warranty, which is 5 years 60k miles.

Are you sure it isn't just the injector clatter you are hearing.

These cars sound vaguely like a diesel at idle due to the high pressure injectors.

i noticed this as well, esp when it's cold. i thought, "boy, that sounds almost like a diesel!" the car runs just fine, so i didn't think anything else of it.

I think I have this same problem, I have one early build (03/06) so I don't doubt that this is the problem, it only happens some of the time.

I don't really know what to look for or needless to say, what to listen for if my CX7 has this symptom. But I wanted to have it checked by my dealership so if I bring it in, what should I mention to my service advisor? Simply mentioning that Motorweek has this warranty issue won't fly with them

unless your experiencing any noises that shouldn't happen I wouldn't lose sleep over it. They said *some* early builds so I doubt it effects a wide amount of CX-7's, they would have released a TSB I'm sure.
