Hello all, i own a 1993 protege and it failed emissions test a few days ago.

It failed due to high NO on the driving part.

They gave me a list of things that it could be due to, one was malfunctioning cooling system. ( i had a piece of cardboard in front of the rad so it would warm up faster during this winter.) i took that out, because it was practically over heating when they were done the test.

Other thing i wanted to do was back off the timing a few degree. as they said it could also be from timing being to far advanced.

So long story short, is do our cars have them, and if so where is it located?

I have looked for a while, and could not see it, I'm used to seeing them on my other cars, and just wondering if it looks different than the others.

Thanks, and happy holidays.

oh, that.... with mazdas you use the diagnostic connector on the driver's side by the battery... connect "TEN" and "GND" together

Excellent!
Thank you.

Just went out and took a quick look.

I found what you where talking about and looks pretty darn easy.

What is Factory base timing, and what would be good to help it pass the emissions test?

Well just to let you know, she passed with flying colors after i took out the cardboard and retarded the timing to 0*-1*.

So when i got home, i bumped it up to about 9*.
Runs like a charm.

Thanks for your help "TheMan"

I think timing shoudl eb about 10 for stock. With higher octane it can eb bumped up to 16 on 91-93 octane for a little more power.

But i woudl do the same thing in my escort (same motor). drop it to zero timingno power. but i woudl always pass with a bad cat!.
