powder coating rx8 wheels

I searched and could not come up with anything.(piss)

I want to powder coat my rx8 wheels gunmetal. What is the prep work and can i do it my self? Will most powder coating shops give me a discount if i do the prep work? I just picked up the wheels and they are going on my white ms3 when it arrives in March/April.

Painting them myself is an option. I thought the gold factory ms3 wheels on black looked good. i know he used krylon paint and it gave the right amount of shine without being too matte or glossy. Cost of this procedure would be appreciated so i can compare to powder coating.

If you want it to last....Powdercoat is your only Real option.
There are two ways to strip your wheels that work well.....You can have them sand blasted or media blasted which will remove the coating..OR the best option , Have them Chemically stripped.
Plan on spending about $400+ to stip and powdercoat unless you have a very good hook-up.
Painting just never holds up so use it as a last option.

I painted my RX-8 wheels at home with Duplicolor Graphite Wheel Paint

Sanded the wheels a little with some 400 and 600 grit (had some curb rash), layed down an even coat of primer, sprayed about 3-4 coats (2 cans worth) of the wheel paint.

If you wanted them glossy you could spray the wheel clearcoat on, I personally like them matte finished.

Yes it did..but the Question is..how long before the finish starts wearing off.
This is the only reason paint is bad.
Don't be tampted to do it the Ceap and easy way if you plan on them lasting for a long time.

Its been that way for a few months already, drive it every day and nothing has worn off yet. Even if it does, a can of paint is $4 maybe I can spot treat if I needed too.

4 months does not even get close to Judging the Longevity of a wheel or any other finish..Come see me in a couple of years and show me how they look if you dont do any touch up..I gaurantee they dont look very good.

Powdercoating Is about 100,000x more superior than paint could ever be.

yeah but this only cost me $20 to do, most powder coaters will charge you over $100 per wheel lol I didn't have that kind of cash so this wins for me

well actually you can justify it, its soo much cheaper, as he said and if it needs another couple of coats then he can do that. No, its not the best option, but way cheaper.

Preperation will help keep it looking good for a while. ake sure you prep the wheel properly and give it a good amount of coats. A clear coat would also help.
Yes powdercoating is a better route but you can make paint last if its done properly.
