Rim offset for winter tire/rim combo - minimum required?

Having just experience my first snowstorm on the stock tires, it is time to get some snows. I have read a lot of the more recent threads on the issue and it looks like I need an offset rim. Can sometime tell me the minimum offset for a set of 17-inch steelies? I seen numbers from the lower 40's on up and want to confirm.
