Hey Qatari CX9.
I'm having the same issue as you in Saudi. just bought the car 2 weeks ago. It's suck since the car has good stock acceleration. I've asked the dealer to remove and they're reluctant to do it. They kept saying it will void the car waranty. I've contacted friend in malaysia if he can solve this issue, and his investigating at the moment. Let me know if you manage to get rid the limiter. By the way, in the Saudi Mazda CX-9 brochure, I've noticed a statement about speed limiter around 156km/h. Damn, should have picked this up before I bought the car...

uh no offense but.... the cx9 is a luxury suv, why would you want it to go fast for? why dont you people get an evo or sti or speed6 instead... matter of fact how about a cayenne s?? and to go 400hp????? theres no aftermarket performance parts for it, and going turbo for the cx9?????????????????????????????? whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat... you people are crazy please dont treat it like that man

Hello AtenzaNY62,
Good to see respond and constructive feedback. I've no intention to push 400hp. My young days have pass by. Had enough driving 400hp Subaru WRX STi back home in Brunei. Now, SUV is my game. Not sure about Qatari CX9 wishful plan. All I want to have is my CX-9 with no speed alarm and speed limiter. It's so difficult to get a "specialist" who can get rid this two things. If it was back home, I have friends who can do just for a cup of coffee, hehehe..Anyhow, nice to read your comment. Thanks

i dont know if its all that safe to take an 4500lbs SUV that is high off the ground past 160km (100mph) and most of the time, the speed limiters are governed because of certain limiting factors, such as the speed rating of the tires that you're using, tolerance of the differential/transmission. Most likely the car is capable of going faster, but look into it..... better safe than sorry

FikseRxSeven,
Thanks for the advice. I'm just wondering if this speed limiter has been set for Middle east import CX-9, and not other country! Appreciate to hear from others. Thanks again.

I've been searching through the website and came across a particular CX-9 site. The site mentioned that top speed for CX-9 is 194km/h. So, it seems CX-9 in middle east has been locked to 160km/h. #####

Semrz1 I understand u man. All u want is to dont that speed limiter, as for me, I wouldnt want it either!!!
U know, I really think that 160km/h speed limiter is so dissapointing, that speed aint that fast, this car can go faster. In my manual no where I´ve seen any indication of that, so Im hoping I dont have the same issue.
Not because Im gonna be traveling beyond that speed, but to be free of doing it whenever there is the need or the desire. So far I think my top speed has been around 90mph. And it feels like nothing!!

I believe a tuner will have to start playing with the software in order to remove the speed limiter. Not sure if there are aftermarket chips for the CX-9 yet (in a non-turbo cars, there are very little gains to be had).

i've driven past 160 Km/hr. to almost 180. was just checking how fast the car can go ...
dunno if the car can still go faster ... it was the driver that was speed-limited :)

Hello everyone.
Qatari CX9: it seems we have to bear a bit longer with the speed limiter.
100$GUY: You are right, I don't need the speed limit. Furthermore, i didn't spend my money to have this nuisance limiter. The most irritating is the damn speed alarm.
CX-901: you have proved CX-9 can go beyond 160km/h. I hope you are not going to speed where there's lot of cars around. If I was in Brunei, I will surely test it's full capability on the highway. But living in Saudi, it's difficult to do speed with too many Kamikaze drivers on the road.
I'm not a fan of top speed on highway but I do love acceleration. Maybe I'm used to drive fast Subaru STi, Silva S14 & Integra in the pass. CX-9 has the acceleration eventhough not like my previous car, but still I can feel the thrill. I'm crossing my finger and hope a chip will be develop for CX-9.

Seems to me some people that posted here think that 160 kmh is blazing fast. Once again it's only 100 mph. I've done faster than that on a snowmobile and here in DC you drive that fast dodging bullets. On a real note, I live in the US and have had my CX-9 to 110 mph driving down the highway. Not sure where the limiter is. I should look it up I guess.

Car and driver states that the max speed is limited at 121 mph (194.730624 kmh).

There's an SUV designed for this style of driving..it's called a Porsche Cayenne.
CX9 kicks pretty much basic Porsches ass with (hah) 3,2 V6
Even the revised basic Cayenne with 3.6 has 0-100 km accelaration 8,1 sec. while Cx9 has 8 sec. (headbang)

Hello guys,
Lindyrect, 160kmh may not be blazing fast on open road but with other road users behind or infront of us, i'll go for another opinion. When I was bachelor, 160kmh felt like 80kmh. When driving back home from work, did go 250kmh in previous car and even that felt like 140kmh. If the car could go above 250kmh, surely I'll press the pedal more. So, 110mph is do-able! Thanks for sharing.

Qatari CX9,
Did you install the speed limit defencer? And do you have the ecu schematic diagram?
100$ GUY

Well, another car limited at 120mph. Still, beyond top speed what counts more is the time u need to pass other cars on the highway (like 50-80mph ) and having fast take offs.

100$GUY,
It's all about good acceleration on overtaking and passing other cars. What I like about CX-9 is the take off at start, don't have to press hard on the accelerator and handling.

Hi Qatari
I bought my CX-9 three days ago from Dammam KSA agent of MAZDA, during the test drive I experienced that all CX-9 in KSA are programmed/locked @ 160km/h. After searching the reason I came to knew that all new vehicle from 2008 either will be limited to 160km/h or 170km/h (for USA brands). This ordered issued by the ministry & car slandered organization in KSA............ENJOY DRIVEN IT GUYS................

obaidnsk,
I've bought mine in DAMMAM too, last year in November. After completing 1000km mileage, I slam the pedal down to see how fast it goes. Yup, it's quite fast for a SUV, BUT, hate the continous speed alarm after 120km/h & 160km/h limit. I went back home to Brunei and ask HKS SLD price, it was definitely cheap. Almost bought it but the seller asked me if I was sure the speed limit is control by ECU or a separate gadget. His adviced was to check this first before buying HKS SLD. I've asked the mechanic at Mazda Khobar but never got a reply. So, what can we do....

I live in Kuwait I have the same problem as you guys... I'm going to buy the SLD soon and I will test it on my car, and about the HKS dealer question... after all research I've done I believe that it's controlled by the ECU I'm almost certain,
hang on guys soon we will know

Hello techspeak,
Being an expatriate living in Saudi Arabia can be interesting and enjoyable, BUT, locking at 160 km/h and speed alarm at 120 km/h do get on my nerve everyday. Everyday i have to travel 200km to and from work, and usually I drive 130 - 140km/h. So, travelling at this speed force me to listen the high pitch alarm. All I need is somebody to tell me how to get rid the alarm.

The fines for speeding obviously aren't as high for you as they are here in Australia. The likelihood of being caught is also quite high.
Our highest speed limit here is 110km/h on divided freeways. Driving at 160km/h (>45km/h over the limit) attacts a very high fine and immediate licence suspension. The suspension would most likely be 3-6 months although it can be longer if you have done it before.
Even exceeding the limit by smaller amounts attracts quite large fines and if you do it 2-3 times within a 3 year period you will lose your licence for 3 months.
The CX-9 is so easy to drive fast I wish mine DID have an overspeed indicator like my last car did.
An interesting aside .... just yesterday our State Govt announced trials of GPS enforced speed limits for cars. They are trialing a system where an onboard GPS knows the speed limit for the road you are on and warns you if you go over it. The system is also capable of slowing the vehicle down to the speed limit if that function is enabled. It is likely to be years before we see anything like that as standard but I actually think it is a good idea. Everybody travelling at a uniform speed would allow for much traffic better flow.

But there are always people that will go slower, and you will get into the same issues as if the speeds were not GPS controlled (i.e. more accidents are caused by people trying to get around slower drivers). But yes, speed differentials is what causes a lot of problems...

I would like to live the Australian life style where people respect speed limits.. BUT I much be more realistic living in Kuwait and all over the middle east, its very diffecult to follow the speed limits. like jabba said "more accidents are caused by people trying to get around slower drivers" anf they are a lot in Kuwait.. in I'm going 120km/h i will be annoyed by people geting around me, thinking i'm driving slow...
And for one thing Kuwait has long highways... I need to speed over 120km/h which is legal but not going over 140km/h
back to my question how can I get a US or a European ECU ?

You might want to look into a GPS unit that you can carry with you from car to car. I know my current TomTom One 3rd edition has a alarm that I can set that will go over if I go over a certain preset speed.

Hi Guys....
I am in Riyadh KSA.
I also have the same problem i.e. continuous beeping at 120Km. Today I went for my first service at Mazda and asked to remove it. They galdly told me that this can be done for SR 280. :)
And about 160Km/h limit. They told that nothing can be done for this as this comes from Japan....
Did you guys managed to get rid of these????
