View Full Version : Oil Consumption

I called the dealership because the check engine light came on, there was no oil on the dipstick, and my transfer case still leaks after 4 visits to them (on a side note anyone know of lemon laws in colorado?). The response from the dealership was that they would look at it. Also they told me that it was normal for the car to consume an entire quart of oil in 2000 miles so they are not conserned about the oil consumption! WTF?
Have any of you seen oil consumption between oil changes? They also said the check engine light is not related to the lack of oil in the car, does this seem right? If the oil is low enough I would think there is a code for that.

my car has 31k miles on it and it burns no oil. Even when I drive it really hard! Who told you that it is normal? My RX-8 used oil because it is a rotary. Normal 4 cyl motors should not burn oil.

not burn oil.. i meant it uses it im using AMS oil.. but i guess you guys never heard of that stuff. performance shop said it would be normal to lose a quart or so since its like the purest synthetic oil on the market which is why its costs 12 dollars a quart for the shit.. do some research before posting. plus our car is no way near a normal 4 cylinder engine..boost

you spend $12 per quart? damn dude. no thanx......
I love this car and it drives like a normal 4 banger.......until I put my foot into it! But even then it uses no oil at all.....
Boost don't equal using oil....
Synthetic oil does equal using oil though. Which is why I won't use it. It causes problems in the long run and you will get leaks over time since it is so thin. I will stick to what mazda says....

well its a synthetic oil.. ull lose some oil.. seems a bit high to be losing a whole quart in just 2000 miles.. i would say if it was 4000-5000 miles and u were losing a quart not to worry about it...do the oil change yourslef.. its not rlly that hard. and then youll know that it was done right.

The quality of the oil has no bearing on the amount a car "uses." Synthetic oils are superior to dino juice, b/c the dispersity of the molecular weights of the hydrocarbons that make up the oil is lower for synthetics. Additionally they have a lower concentration of impurities and a higher concentration of saturated hydrocarbons. They should not burn. In fact, synthetic oils are more durable than regular and should last longer. It sounds like your car is burning oil either from blowby or out of the turbo seals.

im giving up.. some of guys disgust me on here.. o and yeah my car isnt smoking and doesnt leak oil. and last time i checked there was no oil in my ic piping anywhere. most of the guys who race with me see a loss as well and there all using AMS oil. so whats next u gonna tell me that all 8 of our cars are having blow by issues, or turbo seals leaking.

I agree that racing a car will consume more oil. But still it seems to be excessive. Don't get all pissy and get disgusted with people because they disagree with you! Tantrums over the internet are pointless...
Under normal driving though there should be no oil consumption.......PERIOD!!!! Even with synthetic there will be minimum oil consumption. There may be something wrong with the car if it is not being raced or driven really hard all the time. Drag racing or roadracing is pretty hard on a car. Most of the guys I know who roadrace or go to HPDE's will over fill their cars by about 1/2 a quart because of all the lateral loads and oil sloshing around. but even then they only lose about 1/4 quart. So I don't know what else to say other that the car may have something wrong with it. The cars I am referring to are not little rice rockets either. Here is my list. And none of these cars consume oil. And all of them use synthetic...

let's be clear
you are the root cause of any mayhem that exists
here are the the facts you can't deny
you don't know jack shit about your phantom Walbro install
you can not give details or pics because it never happened
people have spent money because you lied about information
for that alone, you are a total nut sack
why don't you do a write up on your oil change. maybe just maybe you can handle that but the jury is certainly out
now please just get shine up your red Mazda grill emblem on your black car(notcool) and fill-er up with Uncle Bens so you and your phantom Walbro can rev on people at stop lights or blow by them with your flashers on thinking you won and run 12's

It is because the 4G63 will not pass emissions.

Your using oil because the turbo has been seizing so hard, it cooked the bearing seals.
Blame the factory ECU. seriously

yeah but they couldve made it pass i mean its there best motor and is one of the best ones out there in my opinion if i could put it in my Speed 6 i would because the parts and turbos that fit it are cheaper.. i mean my buddy just got a Evo 3 motor with a TD05 turbo for 1300 bucks... thats a deal.

Back to Topic:
I currently use the factory specified Oil Viscosity for our car. I "think" its 5w30 correct, I check the manual everytime I buy because I forget.
I use synthetic oil everytime.
Only once in a while if I really get on it, do I smell "burning oil" when I come to idle/ stop/garage.
No I dont think buring a quart of oil is good for the car. The only cars I know that burn a quart every 2k miles are beater cars and old rotaries.
If it really was meant to burn that much oil, it would be in the manual to check the oil every 2k and add a quart. I think if the burning 2 quarts/2k was true, there would be reports of MS6's with siezed engines because of lack of lubrication.
Not to mention think of the damage you would be doing to the catalytic converters with all that oil residue and smoke.
So summary:
1.) Burning 1 quart every 2k to me is bad!
2.) Someone mentioned synthic oil is "thinner" that dyno oil, is that fact or just opinion? If fact, prove it.
3.) By now, it should be clear that synthetic oil is far better than standard oil.

Who the hell told you that amisol, royal purple, or any other synthetic oil is supposed to burn? That is exactly opposite of one of the advantages of running synth in the first place!.. Synthetic oils resist burn off better than conventional oil.. that is why they are better in high temp motors and turbocharged vehicles.. they do not lose their viscosity in high temp situations like conventional oils and hense do not seep by your rings/valves etc and into the combustion chamber to burn off.. If synthetic oils were supposed to burn off, you would very quickly destroy your turbo do to coking...in fact, your amisol oil touts itself as the oil with the lowest evaporation rate.
However, you may not want to believe me.. so how about reading the amisol website and getting right from the horses mouth..
"Maximizes Fuel Economy, Reduces Oil Consumption and Emissions
The NOACK Volatility Test determines the evaporation loss of lubricants in high temperature service. The more motor oils vaporize, the thicker and heavier they become, contributing to poor circulation, reduced fuel economy and increased oil consumption, wear and emissions.
AMSOIL 10W-30 Synthetic Motor Oil resists high temperature volatilization (evaporation) better than other motor oils. AMSOIL Synthetic Motor Oil maintains peak fuel efficiency and reduces oil consumption and emissions."
I've read enough of your posts in the past to realize that most of the time you sound like a stubborn bull headed teenager who feels they know everything, when in the end, you are simply reguritating myths and mistruths you have read from the internet, written mostly by other stubborn bull headed teenagers ... One day hopefully you will learn to be less naive and learn to weed out rghts and wrongs
