Hey guys i recently purchased a 99 mazda protege for a daily driver, its the 1.6 with a 5 speed gear box. now i know its not going to be fast but its ungodly slow, what can i do to wake it up a bit? (intake, exhaust exc) im not looking to spend loads of money because its just a beater. but anything to gain like 15 so hp would be great. thanks in advance

you'll need a turbo to get any power out of that car...someone else posted a similar thread the other day because they just got a 1.6 liter.
Apparently intake and exhaust will only get you maybe 5 hp with headers maybe 10-15hp. You have to spend a lot to get a 1.6 to move at all....good luck

i wish i could laugh at that...dont waste your money they dont make enough psi to do do anything at all. Your better off just using the car as a beater and not messing with it. Save money for your other ride.

yea those electric things would work if the fan spun fast enough, to a point it might do a TINY bit, but after a certain point the engine is in need of so much more air than that pushes that it ends up bogging it down.

all it does is block your intake...they make ones that move a lot faster and kick ass...but they call them turbos and superchargers...save up for one of those!

See, with a smaller engine your modications are going to produce less results as they would on a larger engine. Take a 5 liter V8 and throw on an intake and you will get another 15hp, but on a 1.6L dinky 4 banger, you might get 2 monsterous horses.

or in this case, a diff engine tone, and a relocated powerband.
oh about modding the electric turbo, i really dont no. i guess you could over power it from the car battery or something.

you will get a couple of horses out of the intake header and exhaust, but they will mostly change the power band so it makes it "feel" like you got more power.
I hate to agree with gone_fishin, but it is not worth it unless you go turbo.

+1 on change in power band.
the most youll see is 7-10hp from I/h/e

no one has as far as I know. BIKNMAN had a custom intake manifold that he sold a while ago; but even then, think about it, 10hp from I/H/E and maybe if you are lucky another 7-10 from the itb, you would still be at 100WHP.... not worth it.

i think he had a single runner intake mani, which greatly reduces the air friction going in.
i know for fact that a high compression NA integra put down about 270whp on a mustang dyno. his build thread is over on team integra. its a really interesting read.
the reason they make so much power all motor is because of their valve train. i would take a honda head over an FSDE any day of the week. not to mention the fact that almost all the b series parts were interchangeable.
ITBs are custom work done to fit your engine and your needs. but this also means you need a header to match to see optimal gains. its all custom work, which is why its so expensive. ITBs reduce air friction greatly because instead of one throttle body, sucking in air that travels through runners, its 4 smaller TBs with almost 0 restriction of air flow when compared to an intake mani.

Hey guys, biknmans manifold was complete custom for his application. he was running a stand alone EMS and the manifold required the use of a custom fuel rail. It also removed EGR and VTCS. He made it at Andy Wagners place long ago and his car was already full race at that point. If you spend enough money on custom fabbing everything from you can get any HP numbers a civic can get. FI is the way to go with this car and lately there have been some good threads on it.
