View Full Version : MP3 Catalytic question
I recently had an engine missfire CEL code and I did not fix it right away. I found out later that it can melt the catalytic and sure enough I fixed the missfire and I now have an error about the catalytic/O2 sensor.
Does anyone know where I can get a reasonably priced catalytic or does anyone have one for an MP3. I have to get emmision test done soon and I got a price of 2800.00 from the dealer.
Also has anyone had this same problem and if so did you have to replace the catalytic as well.
Thanks for the help!!!

Junkyard is where I'd start. Your 2001 MP3 shares the same exhaust manifold as any other non-turbo Protege from 2001-2003 (and possibly 1999-2000- but I'm not sure on those years).
Also, a popular mod to make is to replace the factory manifold with a header that eliminates the cat (I'm assuming your talking about the primary cat). Several people may be willing to sell their factory manifold to you. Put a post in the For Sale section under the WTB sub section as you might get more traffic there.

you *could* get your shit warrantied if it doesn't have more than 80k miles you know
Thanks for the info about the exhaust being the same as the 2001-2003. That makes it alot easier to find a used cat. I will try posting a WTB message asking for a protege manifold plus primary cat in WTB section. Is the primary cat and manifold one piece or are they bolted together?
Unfortunately I have more than 80k on my car so it is not covered.

They are bolted together.

(burnout)
I put on the OBX header and have the same problem. how I pass is just as soon as you pull to the inspection reset the error code. There are two ways... 1. buy the reader from auto zone i think it is like $80 or 2. just remove your battery for like 5 minutes tap the brakes then hook it back up and bingo error code gone. Now this works for a little while, long enough for an inspection but no permanant fix. Now if they got to hook you up to the actual machine that tests the actual levels, this will not work but if they just use the reader this will work. Luckly that is all PA doses. Best of luck.

I had the same problem about a month ago, if your car has under 80k on it mazda covers it under warranty free of charge. If you have any mods like CAI or a CBE they might give u shit and say you voided your warranty but if your lucky youll get an idiot like me who thinks thats how the car came stock. Also dont tell them anything about the muliple missfire issue cause that also voids the warranty. On the other hand if your over 80k, bosal makes an aftermarket cat for 450$. but i would check the junk yard first.

^Is that a highflow 1st cat? because you can get a highflow "2nd cat" for less then ¼ of that...

It is illegal to buy a used cat. A junkyard will NOT sell it to you. Just don't want you to waste your time with that trip.
Really. I had no idea it was against the law for junkyards to sell catalytics.

doesn't mean you can't buy it used from a member...there are plenty lying in garages, you only need to ask about it as you have done :)

Yeah, it's illegal for them to sell anything emissions related really. Like cats, evap/purge canisters, that sort of thing. But precisely what culridr stated, ask a member on here for one. It's the cheapes you'll get, and you can even install it yourself with minimal tools and knowledge.
