cold start

My stepson's Protege has a really hard time starting when it is cold. I thought it might be the idle air control valve, so I replaced it and it didn't make a difference. If anyone could give me some other ideas it would be great. The check engine light is on, but my scanner isn't giving me a code to check.

Could it be the fuel pressure? or throttle position sensor?
I really need some other ideas...

Have you checked the battery? Other things to check are the distributor cap, wires, and spark plugs.
