Hi i just bought a 2001 Protege 1.6L and was wondering what kind of aftermarket parts are compatible. i.e. Cold air intakes, strut bars, exhaust ect.

Thanks for any info.

Im looking at CAIs. and i saw this on a thread somewhere else

"cai is 2.5" meaning you'll run lean"

What does that mean and what can i do about it?
The cai that i am looking at is 2.5 btw.

Thanks

our maf is set to measure air in a 2.25" diameter. 2.5 too much air gets buy and the engine will lean out.

simota, weapon-r, and i heard there was a redesigned injen. or use a celica MAF.

like already mentioned bolt on mods for the 1.6 are a waste. if the car isn't an automatic and you want a real difference in power go with boost, everything else is a joke.

yes, turbo is pretty much the only way to go on the 1.6.

I would really love to buy a turbo but i do not have 4 grand sitting around.

Ok thanks. Will an adapter to a smaller size fix that?

How dose this look?:

no, an adapter will not work because it's the size of the piping that matters. if the piping is anything bigger than 2.25" the MAF will have a different reading and lean the car out.

i don't know, but if the weapon-r is 2.25, you should be fine. I have the Simota Twin-Charger CAI and i have had zero problems with it.

I just checked the Weapon-r and it says that the couplings are 2.5", so i assume that the size of the tube is 2.25" what do you think?

mazpro

if the couplings are 2.5" then the pipes are 2.5".

jordna07
11-19-2007, 06:05 PM
Crap! Why would they make a intake for a specific model and the piping is the wrong size.

no the end to the TB is 2.5.

I have one check my pic. <----

Red 99 you have the weapon-r?

I have decided to, when i have the money, swap in a 2.0L.

100 bucks for an intake, 100 bucks for another maf.....200 bucks for 2 hp?

save your money for boost

it will not be worth it to swap for a 2.0L. you will be much better off boosting the 1.6L.

yea. i have one. u can buy a celica MAF new, or find a crashed one. If u get the right intake, u wont have to worry about buying one.

you can find the celica MAF at toyota dealership or advance auto, i think Autozone will have it too. If you go this route like me and one other member. You will be able to use the 2.5" intakes like; Injen, and Cosmo racing without any hesitation or CEL. The part you are looking for is a MAF sensor for a 2000 Celica GT-S like discussed in the linked thread below Other toyotas might use the same MAF, but that is the one car I know for a fact will work.

I dunno man, if you do it right you can be pretty crazy with a 1.6L
I have a buddy who owns a 1.6L 92 acura integra fully built and forged putting out 387 WHP at 18psi. But of course thats with Vtech and a shit load of supporting mods like full 3 inch turboback catless, 1000cc injectors on AEM fuel rail, skunk 2 intake manifold, upgraded fuel pump, axels, tranny, stage 4 clutch, fidanza flywheel, Greddy FMIC, greddy BOV, tial wastegate, cutom turbo manifold, dyno tuned with Chrome. Not to mention the Wiseco forged pistons and Pautor forged rods with full sleeved block. Every nut and bolt and everything on the car and engine has been replaced or upgraded.

But of course thats on a car where performance parts are readily available everywhere and very easy to get everything you need. With a protege you ahve to search your ass off for anything good or cutom make it.

yeah but this guy already said he doesnt want to spend 4000 bucks to turbo his car...he doesnt have the money or the knowledge to go that hardcore...he wouldve been better off putting a downpayment on something quicker a used wrx.

yeah I agree, i actually used to own a 1.6L manual 01 protege.......... for about 2 months and then I bought the MSP. I like the car, but that fuckin thing was slow as all hell. I bought it with a fart can and 17s all stock ride height. Ended up just putting tein springs and a cheap $15 ractive filter on it and sold it for 1500 more than what i paid for it lol........ thats without the rims too......... :p I put stealies on it and sold the rims for another 600

you'd be surprised how much money people will buy them for. I make so much money buying and selling winter beaters haha. just get a few simple mods and all of a sudden people want it.

Thanks for all the help.

I understand if i can not do to much with the car, but i just got it and my parents are not going to let me sell it for something else. I would love to have a much faster car and do a whole bunch with that, but like i said the rents wont go for it. I mentioned this before, would dropping in a 2.0L allow me to have more upgrade options? just a question.

lol, are you aware that your MAF has the Y2K bug, thats clearly why it's not working. Also you probably have tiny unicorns in your engine poking holes in your exhaust and shitting in your filters.

i have an injen cold air intake and was wondering if i would have to get the celica maf. how can u tell if it running lean?? im guessing its bad to be running lean so what are the consequences of running lean since about april-june?? also if i get the celica maf, how would i go about swapping them?? would i have to cut any wires??

Witchdoktor
12-11-2007, 12:39 PM
if you're able to get a scan tool and monitor air fuel rations you can see if you're lean. if you're throwing a cel (P0171) that's a good sign you are, also any hesitations in performance.

I doubt running lean with a cai would be doing serious damage, not with a NA 1.6 liter.

I believe the celica maf is plug and play, there's a thread on it.
