View Full Version : waste gate cause boost spike?

Its a weird thing with my msp. Love it to death and wish I could harness what its doing. I have a joembc on the way, but I have a crazy boost spike. It hits the fuel cut and hurts, feels like I hit a freakin rock! But I know cold weather helps turbos a lot, and after it really warms up, it moves in the cold. Its completely stock. So im confused, I talked to a friend and he says after the needle moves up to operating range it shouldnt spike. But it can run for 30min or more and still spike. WTF!!! Does anyone know. Is this a wga problem?

If your stock..and your hitting fuel cut...That Joe P wont do anything but make this worse.
Check for leaks on your piping and on you WG line.
The WG may be leaking as well.
The cold isnt helping anything either.

where is your wastegate line connected to?

Its completely stock, I cant remember right off the top of my head. But a boost controller wont help at all? I still have a warranty on it, does anybody think itll be covered under warranty? Could a crack or leak in the piping cause it to spike?

i have about the same problem! all i can say is check all the vacuum lines and the turbo pipes from the MAF to the intake mani. its either going to be a boost leak or your WGA is bad. it might be your BPV, those are the only things i can really think of.

All that can cause a boost spike. Just to say, I take really good care of my car, extremely well good care. This didnt start happening till the weather got somewhat cold. If i give it very little throttle itll take off like a bat outta hell, but if I give it full throttle itll spike like crazy, even after it warms up on the highway. I drove for 3hrs, left it in 5th gear, punched it, and it still cut or jerked a lot, worse than it would if it was warm weather.

same shit happens to me, the cold just allows parts that are hot to cool faster which in turn can cause cracks. if you have the stock plastic turbo pipes i wouldnt doubt that some where there is a crack! but also keep an open mind to the other parts that could have just gone out with out warning.

What other parts could go bad? Would the pastic piping be covered under warranty? or should I just purchase hard pipes for the car?

If your still under warranty..Why dont you quit askign questions you cant answer and take it in for service....Its UNDER WARRANTY!

Sounds like you've got a bad wastegate if you're getting fuel cut on a stock motor.

wastegate....take it in for goodness sake
neox.286
11-19-2007, 11:49 PM
it is most certainly the wastegate
I had the same issue as well and it definately WAS the wastegate
I removed that thing and the one I had was so shot that it would just leak air from pretty much every seal...
you can test it by blowing on the vaccum line running to the wastegate...if it blows straight through its shot, if not then its probably a fluke lol
ATP makes a replacement that I used that works PERFECTLY

Ok Im in college, I go to school 6hrs 5 days a week, and work 6 days a week.So someone tell me when I have time to take my car in? I dont have much money, If I take the car in and have it checked out they will charge me 75n hr to diagnos the problem, I have a kid on the way. So sorry if Im askin some freaking questions. I'm just askin so I know more about my car or if other people have had the same problems. Is it so difficult to ask? Im not tryin to be a dick, but im not rich here.
The car is built for a reason, it does very well stock, yes it does need a few modifications, but its a respectable machine and does very well for me.
Im not all about makin my car the fastest and I dont beat on it daily. I respect my car and what it does now. So please dont get all pissy if I ask some frickin questions. If no one wants to help then I wont wry about it. I'll figure it out. But I thought this website was supposed to be here to help people out or give advice to understand the car. If im wrong then sorry for askin a question.

They dont charge you for warranty work dummy...and as far as finding time to take it in...well why dont you fucking stop posting about how you dont have the time and use that time to take it in...a few hours of breaking from the internet might do you good.
Also if you are stock and running only a joeMBC...you sir are an idiot and your engine will not only hit fuel cut more often, but your engine will soon be shooting a rod out of your block...stop bitching, get off your whiny college boy ass and get your car fixed.
Drop your car off at the shop and have a friend give you a ride to class and work for a day...you do have friends right? as said before WARRANTY WORK IS FREE! I went to college and worked to...but you know what there was always time to party, drink, do drugs, and skip class. So skip a one class and get your car fixed...i promise you wont fail out of college...

he can kiss his warranty goodbye with what he perceive will fix his problems too
I guess he also doesn't know that he gets FREE transportation with his car in for warranty work too.... one has to wonder if he's such a dork having to be in class for every minute of his life why haven't he taken the time to read his warranty handbook?

i think the funniest part is that in his profile he says his occupation is "oil technician manager" but he doesnt have enough time to take his car to a shop
I am sure that will warrant some snide remark about how he manages a quik-i-lube and they dont do warranty work, but it still sounded funny

I figured this would happen. Everyone I ever ask a simple fucking question to especially online thinks there a genius and know it all. So sorry if I asked a simple fuckin question, I wont ask anymore. You dont know my life, you dont know the school Im going to and your not a fuckin genius. My car isnt gonna blow up because I do take care of it, and dont beat on it like everyone else on this website. I have not installed the joembc yet, so stop sayin shit that you dont even know. So be happy now asshole you can talk shit online. And I wont ask anymore fuckin questions. So to this website honestly, fuck off!!

I gotta agree with this guy, guys....he didnt really do anything to deserve you guys chewing him out for not doing it under warranty
I had this same issue and even though mine was under warranty they still wanted to charge over 100 bucks just to look at it (yes even though it was under warranty)
I wound up getting fed up with them after multiple weeks of not being able to FIND the part in their system so I got the aftermarket replacement and installed it myself, which fixed it
seriously guys if you dont want to answer his question and want to just chew him out for not having mazda look at it, then just dont say anything! let someone else whos got a little more patience come along and answer it...
and for the record...almost every mazda I have ever dealt with or heard about someone dealing with it (in regards to a five year old car) has always been an ass about getting things fixed under warranty, dont know jack shit about what they are doing with the car, dont have any warranty manuals, dont have parts lists, and refuse to adhere to any blatantly obvious warranty related issues. yea warranty would be what you should do if you want it replaced free, but its not always as simple as walking in to get the thing fixed...especially if they dont even know what a 'wastegate actuator' is (seriously, its not in their system...you have to give them the part number)

you posted something expecting to hear what you wanted to hear? well I'm sorry.... boohoo
we're trying to save you your money and trouble by making you go get your shit fixed FREE
it's not out fault that you're too ignorant about your car's warranty and that it covers a loaner car so that you can go to your precious school... so stfu and drop the car off, get your loaner car and go on with your daily routine and let the dealer fix your shit before you go voiding you warranty
and your shit COULD blow up by just not getting it fixed, I don't care if you take care of your car or not... a bad wastegate will blow up any engine

if you guys havent noticed, hes trying to figure out the problem so he doesnt have to pay the fee to have the car looked at
even if its under warranty mazda still charges to have the car looked at to 'diagnose' the issue, regardless of if the issue is told to them prior...
you guys really need to chill and if you want to answer his question, answer it...there is really no need to get mad at him for no reason, because that just makes you a hypocrite for calling him the loser there =)

warranty covers diagnostics!!!! use common sense!
if they are trying to charge you for diagnostics, they're trying to screw you!

exactally my point
every single mazda I have delt with (which I went to a lot of them) could not find anything about a wastegate being specifically covered under warranty, or even knew what a wastegate was for that matter...thusly they wanted to charge for diagnostics (while I was in warranty time) before they would even think about finding out if that is infact, which its supposed to be, covered under warranty
things arent always as simple as they are supposed to be unfortunately

My warranty is a 3rd party warranty, non-manufacturer. I bought the car from a toyota dealership and purchased a warranty from them. Yes they will mainly go through mazda to figure stuff out. But I have been charged twice for diagnostics because they didnt find anything wrong, and there was. They would not reimburse me for the work either. And $75 is a descent amount out of my pocket, idk about anyone else but id rather save that or spend it on something else useful, instead of blowing it on a diagnostics of my car if a simple question could save me a few bucks. If knowing what a problem is or could be they could check into that and go from there. Understandable? I just thought i'd ask a few ppl who have had these cars for longer than 9months. And how many people have 103k on there msp and this be the 1st problem? All im tryin to do is save a few bucks than spend it, and if askin a question bothers some people than I think you have a problem.
Thanks for the backup neox. I appreciate it.

Did you happen to blow through the line going to the wastgate to see if it's leaking? That's the simplest way to see if it's bad.

They usually charge an hr for diag and if it is covered under warranty they don't charge you. Usually they don't find anything so they charge you the hr for wasting their time. It's procedure, I had to do that too. But if it was a friend or someone I knew I would only quote $1. You have to quote something for legal reasons I was told.

they play dumb and act like the wastegate TSB doesn't exist and milk you... they make more money off you paying them than warranty
neox.286
11-23-2007, 06:17 AM
exactally our points dude =P
trust me when I say, the wastegate TSB is WAY more of a hassel than you think it is...some dealorships (very rarely) will just comply, but most will milk you for it, as you said
the best way you can prove its the wastegate is to walk into service, ask if a tech is busy and if you can speak with him....then ask him to look under your car for a second, grab the line and blow into it....the TECH knows what hes talking about and will completely agree with you about the wastegate....the guys at the service desk will just try and fuck you over =(
if the tech knows whats wrong, he will get the service guys (usually) to find the TSB and fix it
give it a shot

Ok. Im guessing that it is a leaky diaphram. I put a scanner on it to see if the computer was telling anything was wrong with the car. So that tells me that there is something mechanical, aka closed wastegate, leaky diaphram, vacuum leak somewhere. Hopefully ill get to check on it in a day or 2 havent been drivin it for a few days cause of the snow. And idk who it was, but if the wastegate is stuck open the car would not boost. Ive had ppl tell me that.
neox.286
12-20-2007, 10:09 PM
no
it will boost
the turbo will just be maxing out...you will read boost though
take the line going to the wastegate and blow into the wastegate...that WILL tell you if its the wastegate...you should NOT be able to blow into it at all
neox.286
12-20-2007, 10:14 PM
gotta remember that a wastegate is just meant to limit the amount of boost your running....not completely
the wastegates on the exhaust side....it opens up to send less exhaust gasses at the turbine....it wont completely cut off the flow to the turbine though
the turbine will still spin, just with less torque on it....meaning the turbo will still spool up on the air side with less boost
