Ok I cropped some tails that I found on ebay onto my spicy to see if they would look good before I actually bought them. What you guys think?

There's some truth to this. So often, we perceive having something new/different automatically makes it better. Psychologically, it feels that way (at first) simply because of the newness factor. Take that out of the equation, however, and it's often a different story.

Having gone through 2 different tails, I've gone back to the stock. If I had a black MSP, I might have stuck with my Euro APCs. The red probably contrasts nicely. With our orange cars, however, the color almost seems to blend with the color of the car... which I think looks pretty sweet.

They're also higher quality... hate how you can see the freakin bulbs in the aftermarket ones.

They look ugly. Dark tails on a light colored car look completely out of place. If you're dead set on new tail lights, these (http://mazda3online.web.aplus.net/product_info.php?cPath=281_21_31_128&products_id=411) look pretty nice on a light colored msp.

A word of warning on ebay tails, one of the lenses on mine separated from the body of the light and flew off on the highway. (boom03)

I wasn't too sure about them either. I saw them on ebay and was thinking they would give it a more aggresive look, but I don't think it does. I havn't seen any spicy's with aftermarket tails, so I figured I'd crop some on. I guess I can see why everyone is running stocks.

If you do buy them... I would do atleast one of two things.

1) Powdercoat/Paint the inside professionally the same color as the car.
-leave the plastic clear or get it tinted a small degree.

2) Leave it the way it is
-Tint it 35% to 50%

I honestly thought that the tails were broken somehow when I looked at those pics. They just .. look incomplete or damaged or just not right.

From experience, I can say that most people wind up drifting back to stock or very similar. I went through two different kinds of tails before I finally got the look that I didn't realize I could've gotten from the beginning -- stock tails with tint. But tint probably won't look right on a Spicy, it's too bright.

If you don't want the stockers, I'd say your best option is the one that's in the last few posts above mine. I'm not a huge fan of them .. but they're definitely better than those mangled-black ones!

I understand he chopped the image of the WHOLE tail light into the Spicy .. I thought you meant he just doodled up the tail light himself, that a tail light like that doesn't actually EXIST.

But yeah, there are tails like that in the world .. so I stand by what I said, then. The tail light itself is damn ugly.

11-16-2007, 07:01 PM
Damn you guys and girls (women) are harsh!! I only chopped that light on to see how it looked and didn't like it either, but since I went through the work of doing it I figured someone might like it. I actually like the idea having the internal parts of the light painted orange. I've only had the car for like 2 months so I never really looked into what looks good on it. I know I don't want to leave the rear stock and figured the lights would give it the most dramatic change.

I think these tails would look better painted/powdercoated the same color as your car. Basically the same design as the EDM taillights except they are clear.

Then tint the glass...although it might not even need it. The other lenses were too incaved and would look wierd w/o tint.

Ask yourself why you bought an (orange) MSP in the first place. Was it to trick it out and turn it into what most would consider a rice mobile? Or did its tasteful mods, clean lines and capable performance interest you the most? You see, despite the wild paint job, most onlookers consider my (your) car to be quite tasteful. With th exception of the GTI Fahrenheit, you'll be hard pressed to find a car that incorporates the flash of the paint... with the class of the overall look. (In other words, 99.9% of the orange cars on the road are nothing more than stereotypical san francisco treats!) But not ours...

So what seperates us? The usual suspects... big fartcan exhaust, hideously over-sized fugly wheels, unpractical tint jobs (thought tint was supposed to keep light OUT lol) the list goes on... let's see, did I forget anything major? oh yes!! tail lights!! how could I forget??? those are usually the first to go... why? cheap and easy... just like my prom da.. nevermind.

So in short, if you want to blend in nicely with the rest of the orange cars on the planet, grab these types of tails... but if you want to stay put in the prestigious (that's right, I said it) .01% save your money and stick with stock... or grab the EDM APCs.

Or you can just tell me to STFU and do whatever you want! haha As everyone's already said, in the end... you gotta do what makes you happy. Even if that means you'll be eating your egg foo young with chop sticks.

Ever consider blue batmobiles tail over lays?

zuku26
11-18-2007, 01:54 PM
I am far from trying to create a ricer. In fact I'm most likely to old to fall into the typical ricer age group. I just think the rear is lacking something with the tails that are on it. I just can't pin point exactly what that is. I did see the bat overlays. Nothing jumps out at me. I love the look of my spicy but as most cars o the street it could use some subtle changes to have it look like I would want it. I think the front could use some Projector headlights I think I might start there and work my way back.

I've had those exact 'carbon fiber look' tails on my Titanium. Here's a couple pics of how they looked, and please excuse the fact that my MSP was winterized at the time and in generally shabby shape. I never liked the blaring red of the stock tails, since EVERYTHING else on my car is tinted or gray/black/silver .. so this is the solution I came up with the time. But I wasn't ever happy with 'em.

They still weren't what I was looking for. As I said in my post earlier, I ultimately went with tinted stock tails and they are PERFECT. I don't have too many shots of them, but here's what I do have. In the one with my new license plate, my car is winterized and absolutely filthy, ugh. And the other one was from tryin' to sell my subwoofers, but you still can get a look at the tails.

tinted tails are perfect. i had smoked rockblockers on my tailights, but b/c of the shape of the tailight there very hard to apply correctly. i took them off a day later because they looked so bad.

but on the other hand, they looked ssiiiiiick

So, after seeing this picture... I put these back in my car.

Problem is... they look a lot better in the picture! Unless I'm missing something, it ooks like whoever owns this car deliberately took out the 2 smaller bulbs underneath the top large one.

Has anyone done this? Any negatives?

I've done this as well, except wired them into the signals :)

Looks cool to have just the 1 big one lit up for driving + brakes, and the triple signal light looks nice as well (but you need to make sure to have a red bulb for all 3 or it looks stupid).

You don't have to do the signal thing, but I saw no negatives doing my mod, so just removing the bulbs (if you just want those lights off and doing nothing) should be fine.

Rockblocker overlays, yup .. But like NCZ13 said, the application is VERY difficult. I completely effed up my first set. For the second, I took the tails and the overlays to a tint shop and paid $10 to have some pro's put them on. There isn't a single wrinkle. I absolutely love 'em.

I think the tails that Chico mentions would look MUCH better if the white strip was either blacked out or 'redded' out with some of those overlays from Blue Batmobile. That was one of the big things I hated about those 'carbon fiber look' tails on my car .. That damn white strip stuck out horribly, and the bulbs were all naked, and blech.
