Jaguar and Land Rover still on chopping block

Alan Mulally, CEO at Ford, has stated today that Ford is not planning on selling the Volvo brand any time soon. He was quoted during a conference call: “Our plan now is not to sell Volvo but to improve its cost structure and brand positioning. I think we can do substantially better than where we are today.” Ford has completed a strategic review of Volvo, and even though Volvo suffered an undisclosed loss (rumoured to be 'more than 100 million' according to insiders) Ford is still convinced of the long term profitability of the brand.

Volvo of course owns a state-of-the-art Safety Center in Gothernburg, Sweden and shares its C1 and EUCD platforms with Ford vehicles which may have given Ford second thoughts about selling the Swedish manufacturer in the first place. Ford will now have Volvo focussing on the premium car segment, in a similar way that Audi is so successfully doing.

Jaguar and Land Rover are still on the chopping block and are rumoured to be sold early next year. Alan Mulally: “Discussions are progressing with selected parties who have expressed interest and we anticipate these discussions will culminate in an agreement no later than early next year.”
Later this month the new Jaguar XF will go into production in the UK, and will 'make or brake' the English specialty manufacturer. In 2005 Jaguar closed its Coventry plant but if demand for the new XF exceeds expectations than Jaguar can call in the help of PAG stable mate Land Rover. Jaguar and Land Rover have a labour agreement which allowes them to move workers from one company to the other if need be, but no decision has been made just yet on this topic.

Volvo and mazda are probably the only ford segments that actually turned a profit.

Volvo still lost a little bit this year, but it's getting better.

I read this morning that Ford might be planning to take Volvo upmarket to fill the gap left with Jaguar and Land Rover being sold. As bad as Ford was at filling that market with Jaguar, I think this is going to be bad.

Ford CEO Alan Mulally confirmed that Volvo will continue under the guiding hand of Ford Motor Company, saying, “our plan is not to sell Volvo but to improve its cost structure and brand positioning.”

Pundits have speculated that the retention of Volvo, coupled with Ford’s impending divorce from Jaguar and Land Rover, may mean a move upmarket for the Swedish automaker. Volvo would have the latitude to move into more glamorous and powerful vehicles at a higher price point, and with a greater margin of profit for Ford.

Though overtures to a sporty Volvo have been made as show cars, a true sports car, bigger engines, and luxurious rear-drive sedans are all potentially profitable avenues that the company could explore.

It seems that now Ford is considering selling off Volvo. One idea I heard somewhat spitball that now sounds good, Mazda should by Volvo. They already share allot of parts, platforms, etc because of the dual relationship with Ford.

Then Mazda should mold and market Volvo into their premium brand like the Honda-Acura & Toyota-Lexus relationships but maintain a greater difference than those examples

You forgot Nissan and Infiniti!

And yes I heard Ford might be thinking about selling it too and Mazda gets first grabs.

Ford said they want to keep Ford (of course) and Lincoln/Mercury... I say get rid of Mercury the only car they sell in the Escape look-alike. Lincolns are way better looking than Mercury and people think more highly of Lincolns then Mercury’s.

GM is in big trouble they were told to keep two brands out of their 8.
Buick
Cadillac
Chevy
GMC
Hummer
Pontiac
Saab
Saturn

GM said if this were to happen they would keep Chevy and Cadillac. Saturn is for sure getting cut, but really Saturn doesn't make any cars they are all Opel's that have Saturn badges on them. Saab will hopefully be bought by someone and can the GM out of it. Pontiac will die off. Hummer NEEDS to die! GMC is Chevy's underneath and Buick needs to get the axe too.

Chrysler said they might only keep Jeep and if that happens they would bring over the mini van... but would they market it as a Jeep? Chrysler’s and Dodge's are both crap right now so it's no surprise they are getting the boot.

yeah i remember reading somewhere, that if you have a buick in china, its a sign that you have "made it' status wise. i.e you have a well paying job, nice house, etc

Yes I've seen them. They actually look nice. But it may be because of all the other really crappy cars you see there that are dented to hell from accidents and poorly maintained. It makes the buick look like a caddy.

Well I looked into it and one of the Buicks they sell isn't even a Buick it's a Holden Commodore/Pontiac G8 and the Enclave looks streched... I don't think any of the cars there are the same as the ones here.

Its like that alot. Very few cars in traverse themselves to other continents. There are so many different regulations and limitations in each market that mostly these cars have to be developed different for each market
