Well, Your Local Canuck has a dilemma on hand. So, last night I put an add on Craigslist requesting that someone change the rear motor mount in my MSP (because I have no patience or time to do it myself). So this kid came over my house last night around 7:30 pm. We agreed over the phone that he would do it for $250. So around 10:00 pm I went outside to see the progress he had made, and he told me that he was able to get one of the three nuts off. He said the other two were stripping and he would try taking his grinder to them in the morning. He ended up sleeping outside in his truck because he had an hour ride home, and he figured he would try it again in the morning (Yes, I did offer to let him sleep in my house...but he declined). I also filled his gas tank just in case he got cold and needed to start his truck to keep warm. So this morning he gave me a ride into work, and around 8:00 am he called and told me that he was unable to get the other two nuts off. My question is what should I pay him...what does he deserve? I told my fiance to make the check out for the agreed $250, however, she said no because technically he didn't finish the job. So I came up with $175, because he did put in an effort, but he was unable to complete the task.
P.S......what the F can I do about the 2 nuts, what options do I have?

I'd have to agree with your wife on this one... You did fill his truck up and its not your fault that he couldn't get it done. Plus he striped the other nuts so its just going to be that much harder for the next person.
BTW the hardest part to remove the rear motor mount to me was getting the damn harness off of the firewall.

Yah, I just feel bad because he was really trying his best. Now I am left, once again, with an unfinished project.

Why didn't you just take it to an independent shop? What you were willing to pay the stranger would probably be more than what a competent mechanic would charge you. I think you should just call it even for filling up his truck. Afterall he only removed on bolt and screwed up two others.

I had the same problem doing mine. I ended up grinding out the old bushing. Used some 2-part 85 durometer polyurethane from work and filled a hot cocoa container. Stuck it on the lathe and made a 2-piece bushing that pressed in from both sides and sandwiched together just like one piece.

Well, the only reason I didn't bring it to a shop was because I had no way to drop my car off. He came and did it at my house.

Even then towing to a local shop and to do the repair would be about the same if not a hell of a lot cheaper

All he did was leave you a car in worse shape then before. I wouldn't give him anything. It sucks that he wasted his time but that isn't your fault.

Yeah $250 to anyone but a shop is nuts. I did mine at my house. Took about 2 and a half hours. Went really smooth. I soaked all the bolts with a shit ton of pb blaster over night and that helped alot.

I can do one in about an hour.....Maybe a bit more depending on your exhaust setup.
I dont know..It sounds like its gonna cast you a lot to get it done now though becuase of the stripped bolts/Nuts.
I am still trying to figure out what got stripped though..your description is very vague.

have they guy tow your car to a mazda dealer and have him pay them to do it,
and then pay the guy the 250.

The other problem is that all the garages around here won't use the motor mount I purchased. They can only install parts that they get. I can only be vague because I haven't really seen the nuts. I just don't know what options are available at this point. I personally would like to nuke the stupid bolts. This car has been a real bitch to work on...but damn does it look good!

well from my experience , i stiped the threads of two bolts and two nuts , To fix it i had to drop the cross member and cut the top portion of the box where the bolts are mounted and weld new stronger ones in.it wasn't easy job but with a help of a mech friend (he had the tools and weld eq.) went smooth.Bottom line you'll need to find out if the threads are stripped or the nuts edges , if is the threads you got to spend some $$$ if its the nuts edges then could be fixable from a shop and cost $.next time better go to a shop which could give you guaranty on the job's they take, ruther than random person.

why the fuck would you pay some random kid $250 to do it when the dealer would do it for less?

you should have just gone around to some shops and discreetly asked some mechanics if they do side work. I had a mechanic do BOTH the front and rear for 60 bucks. Took him about 5 minutes to do the front and 2 hours to get the back one. The back one is a huge bitch. And I just waited at the shop for it.
Oh and there is no way you can get someone to change that back one in your driveway....I mean it took a pro to do mine in 2 hours with air powered tools, a lift, and a tranny lift (we had to jack the engine up a little bit to be able to get at those two bolts that are f-ed up on yours now.

That's odd becuase I did it in my drive way with hand tools, a pipe,a windup jack, and a set of car ramps... It would of been a hell of a lot easier with a lift, power tools, and a proper jack.

I ended up bringing it to a mechanic who did it for $130. Hey, I figure the whole experience is a lesson learned. This is just one more thing to add to the long list of why I HATE this car so much! It's so funny how much shit I get at work for spending money on modding it.

Bravo to you sir! I retract my statement that it cannot be done in a driveway, but that must have been a bitch to do like that!

If only a lift wasn't so far out of reach. Shit, just changing the oil is a pain in the ass when you how much easier a lift would make it.

Well, I have managed to get my girl to get down and change it. Oddly enough, she really doesn't mind either. When it comes to getting down and dirty, she gets an A++.

The hardest part of the whole job is the two damn little nuts holding the Harness to the firewall.
Needless to say that only one went back on....
WTFH! was mazda thinking when they put those there>?(fu)
